Remember when Final Fantasy 6 was more broken than the past decade of Bethesda RPGs combined despite being infinitely more mechanically simple? Like, multiple stats just straight up didn't work.

I think its setting is cool--I'm a sucker for the "overgrown, verdant post-apocalypse" thing like Hyper Light Drifter or even The Last of Us--but everything about the game itself looks like it's just going to put me right to sleep.

This week's Humble Bundle has ENSLAVED™: Odyssey to the West™ in the pay-what-you-want tier, if you like overgrown post-apocalyptic sci-fi landscapes the environments in that game are fantastic and varied, especially considering it was a mid-generation Xbox 360 game.

Not to defend the polygon man people don't like too much but the nioh review codes went out like a week ago and it's 40 hours long and also probably kind of tough for a lot of people and not just games journalists. They aren't the only site who had to put up something saying they haven't finished it yet

If anything it's pretty cool that Polygon has the integrity to say that they're not going to review the game until they've completely finished it rather than push out a review to meet a deadline.

Durante, the guy who made DSfix for Dark Souls on PC, is apparently now being contracted by companies to improve their PC ports. I know that some of his fixes for the PC port of Deadly Premonition were eventually patched into the official release but it's cool that game companies are taking it one step further.

All the original great beat-em ups were conceived out of 80s zeitgeist fears of organized crime and urban decay, now in today's political climate I think the opportunity is there for a modern revival where you beat down nazis and corporate shills with razor-lined briefcases.

This was why I liked Double Dragon Neon, it had the fidelity of a modern game (polygonal characters on hand-drawn backdrops) but the aesthetic was a knowing wink towards 80s pop culture and games without becoming a Kung Fury monkey cheese smorgasbord.

At this point I consider it one of the perks of PC gaming that you can use Cheat Engine, trainers, savegame editors, etc. to get around the increasingly bullshit mystery box/gachapon/energy meter padding that games keep adding, even if a few particularly scummy devs are just leaning even harder on always-online to combat it.

I just saw a video with one of the new Mass Effects VA's talking about how their character is quirky and goofy, interspersed with some bad looking shots of the game.

Its going to suck isn't it.

The game's promotion is doing a terrible job on making to game look interesting, what little gameplay they've shown all looks super floaty and undefined and the characters look incredibly dull since it's mostly just boring humans with bad haircuts and muppet faces.

So it's a Mass Effect game.

Even at its sloppiest in ME1 the original trilogy was at the very least a competent cover shooter than whatever it is they're going for with Andromeda. Also the fact that they're obviously trying so hard to be diverse and inclusive with the human characters this time around just makes them being so boring-looking that much worse.

At one point during development the No Man's Sky team claimed that they "had to redesign the periodic table to create atmospheric particles that would diffract light at just the right wavelength.". Even if you take the most critical eye possible to the religious significance the creators of The Dragon, Cancer put on the game it's still nowhere near as pretentious as the things No Man's Sky was offering.

"YEAH! CANCER! GET SOME! #OUYA" was... not the best thing for it.

It's probably the most art-game art-game ever, if just because I don't think I've ever really seen a video game that was 100% not designed to be entertaining. It's an expression of the creators' grief more than anything else, which is really kind of fascinating. Even other art games are made by people who wanted to make art, TDC was made just because they didn't know what else to do to cope.

It's got to be weird to be the other people working on the game who weren't the kid's parents though.

"How was your work today, honey?"

"Oh, it was fine. I put the finishing touches on modeling my boss' wife for the kart-racing minigame and then I had to program the recordings of my boss' midnight vigil from when his child died to play in a virtual cathedral that serves as a shrine to his dead child."
