So what's the deal with getting a mail-in ballot in New York? Do we still have to just lie and apply for an absentee ballot if we don't want to go to the polls or is there any movement by the powers that be to push something through to make it easier?

state senate passed a bill to let the general election work like the primary where anybody and everybody can vote by mail, but its been sitting on cuomo's desk since August 10th without being signed https://www.nysenate.gov//legislation/bills/2019/S8015 so whenever this is finalized you should be able to request a mail-in ballot online pretty painlessly, like the primaries.

It's really bleak that 40% cuts leads to a 0.88 billion reduction on a 12 billion shortfall, aka it's not gonna loving work.

And by doling out 9000+ permanent job losses, I'm sure the actual impact on delays and maintenance issues will be way worse than any public-facing forecast would probably admit. This is going to be loving devastating.

MTA is pushing this to every ny publication to ring the alarms again after they finalized their budget yesterday https://new.mta.info/document/24121 extremely grim poo poo. its as bad as they were warning it would be in august and theyre begging the state/fed for money while union leadership promises slowdowns and strikes if they go through with the 10,000 layoffs.

quote:

“There will be a fightback from the unions, and it will be a collective fightback both on the railroads and within the city, I just want to make that clear,” said John Samuelsen, president of Transit Workers Union Local 100. “If there’s any expectation from anybody in this room, whether they be board members or whether it be the bosses at the MTA, we’re not going to open up our contracts and bankroll this deficit reduction. It’s not going to happen.”

Of all the strikes that have been discussed as a result of proposed austerity, this is the one that seems most possible and most likely to achieve its goals. nyc food market in the Bronx that handles about 60% of the produce supply for the city is on strike bc management refused to raise wages by even a dollar (counter-offered 30 something cents lol). if you're in the area check in with the teamsters union or DSA or whatever local organizers that are joining the effort, there's lot of ways to offer support and solidarity! here's the JC16 Twitter acct if you want to get caught up on their activity

it got deleted already but it was a tweet from an MTA acct explaining that benches have been removed from stations to prevent homeless people from sleeping on them. for anyone curious

In Training
Jun 28, 2008

in slightly better homeless advocacy news, the homeless population that was allowed to stay at that hotel in the uws has been organizing, first to fight off NIMBY eviction threats over the summer, and this week they hosted a mayoral forum.

https://gothamist.com/news/mayoral-forum-homeless-new-yorkers-demand-answers-longstanding-crisis

pretty great, not sure where a group like this will go but this kind of collective advocacy can only lead to better things. part of me wonders if the city is removing benches now in retaliation for this lol. especially since all the lefty candidates are police abolitionists, NYPD and MTA cops were probably pissed. more likely it's just bc there was an uptick in people sheltering in subways during the snowstorm this week and losers snitched and complained.
