GW Is Maybe Not As Bad It Used To Be, But Still Not Good.

What's an example of a good company then? I only started getting into GW stuff last summer (outside of SH/WHQ) and so far I'd rate them at the top of the industry.

Also, figure this is the place to ask - what's the latest on Elf/Aelf rumors for AoS? I don't play but might rethink that if elves are freshened up.

No, I agree. I just see GW get constant poo poo, and as far as I can tell they're no worse in product quality and generally Making poo poo I Wanna Buy than any other companies out there in the same industry.

I'm new to this hobby as well so I've only known Good GW™ but they were a moderately different company not long ago. They're a slowly turning ship but the initial launch of AoS was a nightmare and until very recently had a bunch of policies, practices, and design decisions that were aggressively anti consumer, and occasionally anti-retail.

There's apparently a lot of pent up rage from those days and it draws venom when pointed towards today's GW with premium pricing and occasional gently caress ups I'm more willing to ascribe to idiocy than malice.

Yeah I knew they were poo poo from a distance when they had a different CEO, but I never really dived into the backstory. When they were poo poo, they made nothing I wanted to buy, so I never bothered.

The GW Specialist Thread currently has "Spend 2CP to Replace CEO" as a title for a reason. A long while back their internal culture treated the models as the be-all-end-all of their business, not the game systems attached to them, and seemed incredibly tone-deaf regarding the multitude of things that they competed with. "Jewel-like objects of wonder" and "Video games are just a fad" are some choice quotes from past investor relations reports. Then Age of Sigmar happened, dumpstering a 30 year old setting with complex and cool poo poo and replacing it with faceless gold men who bear a striking resemblance to Space Marines. There's also some stuff about their lovely store practices and treatment of employee, but I don't remember that off the top of my head.

Nowadays they've slowly turned the boat around by interacting more with the community, the release of 40k 8th Edition, the return of specialist games in some form or another and the slow unfucking of the AoS setting into a merely okay high fantasy setting with a progressing plot. They're not perfect, but they're infinitely less hostile than their past incarnation so I'm cool with giving them money.

Oh yeah, no, I totally get it. I just keep seeing people throwing salt everywhere, so I'd legitimately like to know who they think is better based on what's happening right now in the industry, instead of just rehashing "well back in 2002". Regardless, it's not worth pressing.

That's a shame there's no solid Aelves rumors. I'd like Sigwatchers.

Agreed with this. I've done a bunch of gold with fleshtone and a bunch with brown and the switch to brown helped a lot.

I also think you want to highlight with a bit more retributor gold and then use something like model air gold.

Edging with silver is okay, but if you seal your mini the colors will warp and the silver will be stark. So if you do that, you want to avoid sealing. I usually seal after the wash and then highlight or don't seal at all.

My last gold armor model I used Vallejo Smoke mixed with glaze medium and it was indeed 1000% better for me than Reikland Fleshshade.

I'm interested in getting into AoS with the new 2.0 rules coming out but have no idea where to begin. A while ago I got talked in to getting a copy of Silver Tower so I have all those models, but that's it.

I know the new boxed set is probably a great place to start, but I am not super interested in the armor mens and the ghost people only marginally interest me. Is there any reason not to just pick up the START COLLECTING box for a faction I'm actually excited to paint and play, even with 2.0 coming out?

A Start Collecting box and the hardcover rulebook together is still going to come in under the box set. Unless you care about the dice and ruler enough to get that and sell the models to offset the cost, I think you’d be fine just getting what you really want.

If you can swing it, buy the 2.0 box set when it comes out and sell off the ghosts and Stormcasts. You should be able to get around $80 for each, and that will leave you with a free rulebook.

I'd say that the core rules will probably be free again, but you'll want the extra stuff with the rulebook this time around, since it looks like there is actual content versus the v1 "rulebook."

(An alternate solution would be to buy the digital rulebook which should be coming out as well.)

Depending on how well the box set sells though, you need to be OK with only getting $50 per side. It didn’t take long at all for Dark Imperium armies to hit that price.

Maybe it's because the Sigmar starters are old, but I had a hell of a time getting the Stormcast half of that box for under 60. I just recently lucked out and got two halves shipped for around ~100.

Yeah demand could be entirely different too. The AoS halves could go for more I just wouldn’t want someone to blow the money if it means they can’t get the rest of what they want unless they get X price. Should be able to see within a couple of days of launch which way the wind is blowing.

Its weird for AoS these days. When they released the Warhammer Legends rules for Dark Elves and did the one week made-to-order heroes for them its all just elf and elves. And occasionally in conversations on their twitch stream and once or twice on that new podcast they'll say goblins or dwarfs. But in anything official in written form its all Grots, Duardin, etc.

I was under the impression that that was because Age of Sigmar takes place so long after the End Times that the language/names of things organically changed, which is why GW still refers to things by old names when appropriate.

Yeah - AoS of literally thousands of years
after the End Times (if not more.) GW has been incredibly vague about the length of time between the two, but it's safe to assume that a lot of the names are corruptions of the original (never mind the IP reasons.)

Even a gold other than Retributor is an improvement.

That’s what I thought. I’ve never seen a credible source for the IP theory and since GW themselves keep using the old names where thematically appropriate and reprint Old World novels I feel like it’s just internet nerd hate-theorying.

Someone who made a documentary series that said "maybe cliché tropes of women in video games are lame and counterproductive, also here's some games that don't do that and are awesome like Beyond Good & Evil", which of course made Internet nerds lose their goddamn loving minds and send her death and rape threats.
