Don't you usually have to put a down payment on a house to buy a house? $15K, $20k? If you were renting you wouldn't have to pay that money and instead could invest it in some interest bearing account and at the end of 15 years you would have made some money.

Doesn't mean renting is better but it's not cut and dry "if I rent I end up with nothing."

Truly depends on when you buy a house too. As was mentioned already in Florida prices dropped the hardest and then shot up the highest when the market swung back around. We bought our house at the bottom in 2012. Had we done nothing at all our home gained 100k in value. Because, however, we did a full remodel our home has now doubled in price that we originally got it for. We also live in Tourist Town, FL (Sarasota) which locks in prices for everything way higher than they'd be elsewhere.
I also really like yardwork and maintaining land so home ownership owns for me.

Looking at things as raw dollar amounts in asset/liability terms always weirds me out. Living is a depreciating asset, food is a waste and sleep loses me money. A house isn't an 'asset' and you don't get as much money back when you seek it but what about the actual living that's done in the meantime? What is the dollar amount when you derive satisfaction and enjoyment out of painting a wall whatever color you want whenever you want? Planting a tree just because? Those sort of freedoms have a very real worth that can't be put on a spreadsheet much like your favorite shoes aren't actually worth anything outside of this nebulous human aspect of worth.
Truly the easiest way to save money is to go to sleep and never wake up.

Going to sell my car to Carvana tomorrow, everything has been super smooth so far so we'll see what the actual sale is like. There isn't many options available if you have a newer car and you want to sell it outright without trading it in to a new car and there is no way in hell I'm going to go down the road of private party selling for something in the mid 20k range.
Since I own it outright it works out to me have been making around 250 bucks a month payment since we got in in June 2013. Not bad at all I think, and I've enjoyed the car very much while we've had it.

But like I was told earlier, now that I have a ~~**LEXUS**~~ the VW just feels worse in every respect. Even though it's a 95 vs. a 2013 my wife and I can feel the purpose-built difference between the SC300 and the Golf R. You drive them both back to back and you just know that the Lexus was meant to be what it is while the Golf R gives away that it's a cheap car with bits stuck on. This stupid Lexus ruined the Golf R for me and my wife.

This is just for my new 30 mile commute. The bus was okay for 15 miles, but I'm feeling exhausted in rush hour traffic with it twice a day for double the distance.

I've now got a $2000 93 LS400, everything works showing scheduled for tomorrow, the $1300 AC is broken scheduled, and a 2008 Crown Vic scheduled. All for tomorrow morning.

We currently have a NX 200t as a loaner though and this thing loving sucks. I always bop my head on the center light cluster that sits above the rear view mirror because everything is so closed in and just close to you. I'll go to back up and smack my forehead on it when I wrench around to look out the back window but all I find is a bunch of headrests and a tiny gunner slit where I can't see a drat. Turn back around and use my mirrors and the rearview camera instead. It's quick but it feels dead, the fit and finish is amazing but I'm sitting above the ground high for no reason and have no space in the thing because of it. It is an F-sport model though so you can turn it on to SPORT MODE and change gears with the paddles and while that is a bit more fun it still feels dead. My wife hates it hard because it's a CUV and she's judging the poo poo out of herself for being in it.

Fresh off the heels of getting that Lexus and still looking for a Samurai for my wife I found a 1991 Geo Tracker (aka Suzuki SamuraiSidekick) with 36,000 miles on it with A/C and in phenomenal shape. It's bright yellow, has :krad: graphics on the side even. Heading out to look at it tomorrow, they are asking 5k for it. From what I've looked at for these it seems that people run them ragged and they have some sort of computer fault past 200k, they rust like crazy up north and people complain about the lack of power. Otherwise like the Samurai they are die-hard little trucks. Do I have that right?

36000 miles is insane. Do you know what the story is?

The story is some old lady retiree bought it new, then in 1995 sold it to Marie, who had it since then. Them being the high-end snowbirds, the kind that live in Florida and then go somewhere else in the summer, meant that they had it parked underneath a closed-in carport and it served as a second car for driving around town. There is this weird inverse of rust where the underside and body is spotless, including the fuel lines, bolts, all that stuff. The inside of the car though has rust hazing on things like the seat rails, the stick shift stalk and the rear view mirror bar. the interior is mint, door cards are perfect and the only age related anything is the top layer of the climate control labels is peeling and coming up from the labels beneath and the stick shift knob is all chewed up from exposure.
In line with that the tires separated from their treads in short order once we hit the highway and as we got into town and on the final streets to home it started having intermittent issues with running, the exact same way that a clogged fuel filter makes a car behave. Considering this is probably the first time it's been at the speeds and for as long as we had it going at I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's clogged, or if the fuel screen on the pump is all gunked up too. Going to dig into it tomorrow and I'll post some pictures in the post your ride thread as well.

Dive directly in, if a bunch of shithead bozos that are lame and also stupid as gently caress (use your imagination here about people you dislike) can drive around with a stick then you too will have no problem. Once you get the concept you get it and that's all there is to it. I'm guessing if you bought an RS or Civic R you'd learn how to drive stick in less than 10 minutes. The rest of your time is spent learning the car and then later when you hop into another manual transmission car for the first time you will buck and maybe stall it or rev the piss out of it as you feel for the clutch engagement and then learn that car in 30 seconds or so.

I taught a neighbor of ours how to drive stick on my Golf R and he got the concept right away, the rest of the time was spent learning the car because they all have different ways they feel and driving a manual transmission vehicle is nothing but feel.
