You know, I watched some news show on BBC One with a panel talking about stuff and there were stupid tories, some racist gently caress UKIP thing, and Peter Coates, who actually sounded very reasonable. I don't know if it was because the rest of the people surrounding him were horrible human beings but considering that kind of people is currently the majority power, I wouldn't mind him becoming PM thanks to some ancient imperial football law or something.

But to be fair, these days "sounding reasonable" amounts to something like "hey guys I know I'm reaching here but maybe murdering all the poors is bad???"

Let's start on a good note here with an inheritance tax cut which will clearly help fund the struggling NHS and expand infrastructure investment.

I don't think it's going to be Mad Max, I'm thinking more banana republic but without bananas and with shittier weather.

To quote a snippet "Some of the prison guards are letting the drugs in and making a load of money while the Government turn a blind eye". Indicative of a lot of comments on public forums with regards to the situation. The internet is the worst place.

Wait, isn't that actually the case? I'm not saying every prison guard smuggles drugs, but certainly a small minority of them do indeed turn a blind eye. Or am I missing something here?

"Unelected peers" is a bit hypocritical when the PM was not, uh, actually elected, and neither were Farage and Johnson and pretty much all the ministers. Also lol because if the Queen agreed with Brexit you bet your rear end they wouldn't call her "unelected queen".

Not much, people only earn that much through capital gains and that means they have lots of wealth around, which means they have good accountants, which means their tax paying is optimised as gently caress and they most likely abuse lots of loopholes. I still find it a bit hard to adapt to the absurdly high levels of trust associated with deliveries here in the UK. Leaving stuff with the building manager is fine, but completely random neighbours? That just seems weird on so many levels.

I mean don't get me wrong, it's absolutely awesome that I can order something and usually find it next to my flat door because the building manager received it and put it there and no one stole it, it's like a miracle. I'm still not ordering anything worth over £100 because let's not tempt fate.

It leaves him open to ridicule and he'll have to publicly deny any wrongdoing. The right wing press get to laugh at him instead of engaging with the point.

I agree it was stupid to gently caress it up. I still think the mistake is being unnecessarily demonised. The "criteria" (more like lack of such) is such enormous bullshit that I don't even know where to begin.
Looking at some more reasonable indexes like Gini and WTBB and such it's pretty clear that places like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Germany score higher on all counts. Switzerland is not out of place near the top of the list though.
The UK remains a very nice place to live, but saying it's #3 is bullshit.

The NI changes are actually progressive - they reduce the burden on self-employed workers earning <£50k while increasing it on those earning more. Since they also do bring different employment types closer to parity in terms of taxation, I'm really not seeing any good reason to object to them. Like, yes, it sucks if you were self-employed and are losing some of your favourable tax treatment but you're still getting a better deal than regular employees, so...

I didn't read that - reporting on the actual budget's effects seems to be terrible. I was commenting on the quoted comment though. I guess it's fine as long as it's progressive.

I still think large accumulations of wealth and high incomes should be taxed more aggressively. I'm happy to pay more myself if it means they tax capital gains on the order of my income as if it was income.
