is there any particular reason farage is starting a fight against carswell?

He thinks Carswell isn't trying hard enough to get him knighted. Seriously.

Like there's more to the animosity than that, but that's why they're fighting right now.

E: it might actually be a peerage that Farage wants.

Plenty of rumour that carswell is looking at re-defecting (double defecting? un-defecting? refecting?) back to the tories at the moment, but that would serve fartrage better than him, surely?

I think Carswell is relatively popular on a local level and would retain the seat, especially given the general swing away from UKIP to the Tories as they move further right.

Trump's state visit has been postponed by the way.

Dennis Skinner is older than Ken Clarke. Ken Clarke is father of the house because he's the longest serving MP. (Technically speaking, Clarke, Skinner and Kaufman all won their seats in the 1970 election but Kaufman was sworn in before Clarke who was sworn in before Skinner)

The Cornish National Liberation Army also threatened to desecrate any English flag they found in Cornwall and told the media they had financial backing from American donors and military training from the mighty Free Wales Army and they boasted over 30 members.

And btw I'm not actually making any of this up, but I can't speak for how accurate the Wikipedia article for Cornish Nationalism is.

You don't need to be a super smart politics man or even a science man to see that Corbyn has good politics but is a disaster of a leader. I don't see how anyone can find what Hawking said disagreeable, especially since that's been the general consensus here for a while. The problem is finding someone with both good politics and the leadership skills to overcome the lovely situation Labour is in, since most of the PLP have neither.

And yes, the media are obviously massively against Corbyn, but any Labour leader to the left of David Cameron is going to face that in this day and age, and unless you're planning on completely abandoning the democratic route to socialism, then we need to go d a leader who can deal with that effectively. I don't think it's impossible. Look at Bernie Sanders, the guy consistently beat his right wing adversaries in the opinion polls in a country far more averse to socialism than ours, which as Pissflaps likes to point out is something Corbyn has failed to do. Too bad his party went with a candidate that everyone knew was unpopular with voters. Labour should do the same imho.

Corbyn actually did better than Sanders i.e. he WON the Leadership contest.

well yeah, part of my point is that the party membership don't always make the best choices. Though to be fair, you can also look back at the US elections and see a path to a Sanders victory based on where it was lost. No one could say in good faith they believe Burnham, Cooper or Kendall would be beating May in the polls as things stand.

You can pay the £1/month fee if you're under 27.

e: I just double checked this and they've put up all the fees by £1. The standard rate is £4, £3 if you're a student, and £2 if you're under 27, retired, unemployed, work less than 16 hours a week or a trade union member

e2: The £3 rate is per year, not per month and also applies to the armed forces.

Yeah, one of Osbourne's tactics was to build up to something incredibly lovely in the budget so that when they u-turned on it, people would be happy about that instead of mad at the bad poo poo. He usually had the good sense to do the u-turn before the budget so it'd get a good reaction for not doing the bad thing we thought he would.

As an outsider I have a question - are there any "sane Tories", or like the sane Republicans in America, were they chased out of politics/into Labour?

Most Tories aren't as ridiculously socially conservative as the kind of chucklefucks you have in the Republican Party. They do have a socially liberal wing that would probably fit in with the more fiscally conservative Democrats.

More relevant right now would be the more anti Brexit Tories like Ken Clarke and Anna Spivey.

And as far as I'm aware, only Shaun Woodward made the jump to Labour and that was way back when the Tories were still opposed to the repeal of section 28. Bercow was rumoured to before being elected speaker though.

true but opinion polling have them at a net favorability of around -15, which isn't as bad as Corbyn but still somehow worse than Trump, which is insane. Favorability polls have done well at predicting the results of elections where voter intention has failed (see Ed Miliband) but it's early days yet.
