Another example that comes to mind is in FFXV when someone says "I see the sea!" which is a literal translation of the Japanese line, but would be better as "Check it out, it's the ocean!" or something.

Uh, why? It's immediately followed by Noctis saying "I "sea" it too!" so it was a deliberate joke in English

I think it's important to keep in mind that Persona isn't just leaving in stuff like honorifics for the sake of slavish accuracy, but because the game is actually set in Japan and is about Japanese characters dealing with Japanese social problems.

Having characters in games that take place in fantasy worlds or medieval Europe analogues say "senpai" in English is weird and silly. In Persona, it's in the context of Japanese people having a conversation. They should make an American player feel the dialogue is more authentic, rather than "shameful" or whatever.

I get the logic of it, but the characters are already talking English. I've already accepted that this isn't the "real" language they are speaking, but I can buy the illusion and it's not like it breaks immersion. By throwing in random Japanese words that immersion and authenticity is broken for me.

Just got Moon Rank 1.

- My MC is named Kaitou Takashi. Would be Takahashi but not enough room. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mysterious_Joker

- English VA is Good, glad to have it on for all the unsubbed stuff.

- I managed to do the entire Palace in one run, thanks to selling the free DLC Soma and getting an early 50k yen to stock up on healing and the best equipment.

I have beaten the game, AMA.

Spoilers for stray thoughts, don't mouse over it until you've beaten the game idiots:

It took me 80 hours. Probably closer to like, 90 after resets. I was around level 72 when I fought the final boss, so several characters didn't have their final skills. My final party was Ryuji, Makoto, Haru, and Trumpeter/Satan. Final boss theme was pretty dull. Come on, after the absolutely phenomenal Rivers in the Desert with Shido and the Holy Grail, that's what we're going with for the final fight?

I dated Futaba 'cause she's cool. All the other girls were cool too, but I'm no cheater.

I liked the English VA for everyone. Shoutouts to Goro's for absoluly nailing his voiceclips in his Loki form. Speaking of Goro, I won't say he being the traitor was unexpected, but I figured the twist would be that he wasn't the traitor, so. Baal's av made me laugh when I went back to look at it. I did react when he mentioned the pancakes, but didn't really think too much about it. Fair enough to have the drugs make the MC into an unreliable narrator.

Evil Igor was fun, glad they did that. Nyarlathotep?!?!?!?!? Yaldabaoth was fine for a final boss, but I guess it was the music that made him feel a bit lacking. Best final boss Persona upgrade though.

The Casino had the best dungeon music in the series, holy poo poo the funk.

Ryuji was awesome to start with, but he never really grew. He never loving apologized to Mona either, the gently caress dude, I really wanted to punch him at that point. Almost as much damage as the MC though which is no mean feat. Ann, hilariously enough, turned out to be the most Chie of the group. Both of them really became less important as the story progressed. Morgana was pretty okay, basically Teddie 2.0, so better, but not my favorite. Sat in the backseat to heal everyone but I had to call him in a few times to heal the party when Makoto wasn't enough. Makoto was loving great, I like her place in the story and her growth, her skills made her an excellent jack of all trades, and she never fell off in terms of either gameplay or story. I turned out to really like Haru, she was cool and funny and sweet. She wasn't quite as versatile as Makoto and wasn't really all that important but hey. Goro best boy.

Whoops, I forgot to write my thoughts on Yusuke, which I guess could tell you my opinion about him. I didn't much care for him. Sorry, I know many think he's great, but I didn't find him engaging in either a story or gameplay perspective, and Mercer didn't do anything particularly special with the role.

I played it on Normal, and I found the difficulty to be "good" for me. It's not a particularly difficult game; I never died on any boss fight and most of my deaths happened because of, well, bad luck. You get so many outs later in the game that it's actually really difficult to die even when you mess up. The game's at its most difficult when you try to go through the first dungeon in a single day (which I did, go me). Main character death is still game over, and it's really the only time it's gonna happen. Again, though, didn't play it on Hard so I couldn't tell you. You do need some "skill" to the game, but it's mostly trying to keep buffs and debuffs up.

I hated SMT4s battles because they were way too feast or famine, and this game gives you a lot of opportunities to bounce back in straight fights, so I dig it more. But then I'm not really all that into difficult stuff. But no, it's not a particularly "difficult" game, and I beat every dungeon in a single day whenever that was possible.

I'd say the story is consistently more engaging than P3 and P4 because you're more proactive this time around.

I know absolutely nothing about the is game or SMT, but the creature design in this is loving great.
What does capturing personas actually do though? Like can you level them up and add them into your party, or are you stuck with using school kids for fighting and the personas are just temporary summons or something?

You can fuse different Personas together to create new ones. By hanging out with friends and increasing their Confidant ranks, you get experience bonuses from fusing new ones. This ain't Pokemon; you're supposed to use them only as long as they're relevant, and then sacrifice them for new power.

Right outside your classroom, near the stairs to the right when exiting. If you get a message on your phone but it doesn't directly tell you if you're ready to rank up or whatever, accepting it will just take you to where the character is.
