This poo poo just solidified my decision to skip AM5 for a while yet, so I just pulled the trigger on a 5800X3D to upgrade my 3700X/X570 build while they're still available, and a 2x32GB 3200MHz kit that matches my old 4x16GB.

Also swapping my 3070ti for a 3080 with a friend who doesn't need a 3080 in a secondary PC for some cash in between, and have a 2TB Kingston KC3000 drive sitting ready to go as well, to replace an a2000 1TB.

At the end of this, I hope to have a (reasonably) faster computer with 96GB ram, and to use the leftover parts in a HP prebuilt that's sitting without CPU/RAM/NVMe for a new proxmox host.

Consider a 3600mhz kit, that's the sweet spot for 5000 series

I'll consider that if I can't mix 32 and 16GB dimms with the same speed/CAS rating on this motherboard. I plan on reusing 2x16GB in a different machine.

100% this, tbh.

Quote from Lisa Su on the Moore's Law debates going on (Jenson said its dead, Gelsinger said its not):

So basically I guess her take is "Moore's Law isn't dead, but yes it is dead". Really a lot of the discussion seems to be people using "Moore's Law" to mean everything from the original transistor counts will double definition (which Intel is still using), to redefining it as ICs will continue to get faster through one pathway or another (AMD's definition apparently) or continue to get cheaper at a given performance level (Nvidia's definition apparently).

It seems everyone fundamentally agrees that cheap and cheerful process improvements are over, though.

I slapped in 2x32 and 2x16 of DDR4 3200MHz Cl16 and it just works with a 5800X3D. Not sure how happy I'd be trying to do that with DDR5.

You did so much poo poo at once that it's hard to pin down how it went wrong. Beyond Asus bad, that is.

Pretty happy about my 5800X3D / 3080 10GB combo. I don't care about ultra graphics or ray tracing anyway.

I haven't really been paying attention to comp hardware for a bit, would the 5800x3D be a "good final update" to my AM4 PC? Its got a Ryzen 5 3600 and a RX 6800 in a B550-Plus right now. It should just be drop-in (after maybe a bios update), right?

Yes and yes :sun:

I tried -25 and got a BSOD that I didn't want to spend time investigating, so I backed off to -15, haven't had any issues since.

Wibla

I also got 2x16 + 2x32 of DDR4 3200MHz at XMP/DOCP working just fine on AM4 after like 5 minutes of fiddling, not sure I'd want to mess with that on AM5.

Speculation is bundle price will be around 329ish, which, compared to 229 for 5600x3d, 170 for B550, and 40 for ram, is not bad, but locking yourself into the AM4 ecosystem.

As a fellow AM4 ecosystem inmate, the 3D vcache cpus are really nice and accommodating jailers :sun:

I've been chilling with a R5 3600 + 1070 combo on 1080p for a while now. The 5600x3D is really tempting. I live like 10 minutes way from a Microcenter.

Do it. It's a pretty cheap upgrade that will boost performance by a lot and extend the useful lifetime of the system by quite a bit.

I also upgraded from a 3700x to a 5800x3D and do not regret it. It does what it says on the tin, and does it well. Some games that used to stutter a bit on my 38" UW (3840x1600, 3080 10GB) no longer do so, and the system feels snappier in general.

Wibla

No, Viewsonic VP3881, 60hz and no VRR, so the 3080 isn't getting a very hard workout, but the stutters are nevertheless gone.

I think you'd be better off putting the cash towards a GPU upgrade, you're unlikely to squeeze much more out of a 1070 with a better CPU.

$230 for a 5600x3D that performs the same as a 5800x3D in a bunch of games is a silly good upgrade to his current setup, he can always upgrade the GPU later, but those CPUs are not going to stick around for long.

My 3600X is still a nice CPU, but it's in my secondary desktop because I upgraded my primary desktop from it to a 5800X3D and have zero regrets. The secondary machine is pretty much all the parts I upgraded from on my primary desktop, plus a new B550 motherboard and a PSU I had on hand.

My 3700X lives on in a cheap as dirt B550 board :sun:

The 5700X3D was just released, the 5600X3D was a limited release in the US.

I'd go for the 5800X3D if possible, but if not, the 5600(X) is also fine and will be a significant upgrade from your 2600.

There are ebay sellers who sell mobo + cpu + ram combos that are fine. Tugm-somethingorother is popular.
