Hello May thread I am here to inform you about the single most important release of this month:

That of visual novel Dies Irae on Steam on the 31st. It is longer than the King James Bible, will not contain porn until months from now, and features Japanese teenagers fighting Nazis with magic or something.

I feel like "put your name in the credits" should be slightly lower than its inclusion in the $1,500 tier

Unfortunately From's only connection to 3D Dot Game Heroes is that they published the JP version, it was made by Silicon Studio and I dunno who published the NA version.

edit: wikipedia says it was Atlus so well I guess we're never getting 3D Dot Game Heroes 2

Ok it's actually not that surprising really. I muted the music very early on in The Witcher 3 and never looked back, enjoyed the game a lot more that way.

That also reminds me there was some survival game (Rust I think) where you do get a random character, and there were people complaining when they rolled a female character and couldn't change it

This resulted in people getting a lot of random hate from bad people and disliking the game because they were called slurs because their character turned out to be black so it's a real stupid idea

If at least one person learned something from being given a skin color they couldn't change and receiving hate for it, though

It's still a stupid idea because all it lead to in practice was a whole bunch of whining and making people with REAL mental barricades genuinely uncomfortable (see the article I'm about to link). I like Garry Newman, he is a smart guy who doesn't give much of a poo poo, but his response to this was "it happens in real life and you don't get to choose there" and it made me wonder if he knows that people play video games to get away from real life.

It's totally valid to not like RUST for that reason, but it doesn't make it "stupid".

It's very ignorant of him to just say and imply "people are racist/sexist/whathaveyou irl and it's not my fault it carries over to the game" when it definitely is for pushing it on the players in such a hamfisted way. Treating those issues as nothing more than another layer of depth in your video game is very insensitive.

By itself, yes, it's an interesting idea that hasn't really been done before. I stand by my opinion that a multiplayer game played mostly by mid-teenagers is a terrible place to debut such an idea.

One thing I've always appreciated about FEAR is that they don't stop you from trying to blow Alma away if you really want to. Sure, nothing happens except for a visual effect as your bullets become ghost bullets, but still. They could've had the protagonist lower his gun or refuse to shoot when the crosshair is on her or whatever but nope, they let you fire away. As well you probably should if you are suddenly confronted by some crazy poo poo.

edit: Also a little detail about that I recall is that Alma bleeds if you shoot her in the endgame because despite still being a spooky ghost girl, she's at least vulnerable now.

Also there's a sequence in the first game (maybe the second game?) where Alma is slowly chasing you, and if you try to shoot her there she teleports ahead and catches up to you faster :haw:

lol what does this even mean?

Seems pretty obvious? Static camera angles (and thus pre-rendered backgrounds) mean hand-placed/hand-painted scenery which requires some thought to be put into the art direction. The goal becomes to frame and create the scene around the camera instead of just placing stuff wherever. See Abe's Oddysee for a pretty well-known example.

I bought it on PC. The game runs on the same engine as Dishonored 2, and I didn't really like how the movement felt in that game either. Just feels very imprecise, especially in the air, which is a bad thing because you get a jetpack early on in this one. Also I am tired of video games where you move slow as molasses, improved to slightly slower than a turtle with all the movement speed upgrades. *glares at re7*

To be fair, I also didn't climb that fence at first because those two guards are very obviously directly in the line of sight to you and the fence which will both be lit up with a giant spotlight. But climbing over it taught me that guards in Hitman are totally blind outside of a range of about 5 feet at which point they gain crystal clear perfect vision.

I got Absolution free with PS+ and it was... fine? Never understood why people were down on that game, the story and B-movie poo poo is bonkers but it was a blast to play.

Hitman GO is also very good, probably the best of the GO games.

Absolution is a great game. I think the reason people were down on it and still are to this day is because it's pretty antithetical to the standard Hitman formula, going from open levels to a more checkpoint/area based system. There are still some open levels in the classic style (the Chinatown one and the one where you have to take out the three cops come immediately to mind) but it basically goes checkpoint to checkpoint for the majority.

Generally speaking it caught a lot of flak for being very... pushy on the player, for lack of a better word. It came out at like the peak of ragging on video games for being too hand-holding, and it definitely feels that way from time to time. Directing the player around as it does was decidedly Not Hitman, not that it really matters but it did a lot to the series' fans. It tells you exactly where to go if you don't bother telling it not to via the options menu, and that was a relatively new addition to the series at the time. It also has an actively bad story instead of a mostly ignorable bad story like the rest of the games but the story in Hitman matters exactly 0 in every iteration so lol.
