Is airpower a thing in the battletech universe? It seems to me that mechs would be big obvious targets for airstrikes.

I've watched a couple youtubes and the starter mech is always a stock blackjack. When you get past the intro missions your starting merc band always has your blackjack, a spider, locust, shadow hawk and a vindicator.

Zanziabar posted:So, what I'm getting thus far is that really only the Shadowhawk & Vindicator have any sort of short-mid term potential in the campaign? The spider is an ok light mech. I think a lot of the streamers don't really understand how to use speed and jump jets to keep their lights and mediums alive. One guy I saw stripped all the jump jets off his mech and just tried to brute force his way through missions. It's also worth keeping in mind that the mechs you encounter and their salvage pieces are semi-randomised and a damaged mech can spend a long time in the repair bay. So you will likely need to figure out how to make different mechs work for you.

The only limit to continual expansion would be access to jumpships and there seem to be plenty of them on the periphery. There could have been continual expansion throughout the entire 1000 year game backstory that no-one in the IS paid any attention to.

I imagine if you've not played Battletech before the game will be like descending into some nightmare realm. There are two crit states for weapons. The first makes it less effective and the second knocks it out. Mechs carry multiple jump jets and each one you shoot out reduces its jump range.

I managed to headshot a PPC Catapult in an assassination mission but I only had 2 priority picks for salvage and the RNG didn't give me the last piece. I keep getting multiple jaguars, locusts and jenners that I sell to keep my company afloat.

I assume that I'm not going to be able to pay back my debt, mechanically (and therefore not be allowed to leave the starting area) until I advance the plot? AFAIK that's correct. The only time pressure on the campaign map is your monthly budget so you can feel free to slum it with backwater contracts until you are comfortable with the game.

This game really needs a hardcore mode. My favourite moments have been in the early game when you need to scrape together a lance of your backup locust, a commando and whatever functional mediums you have running just so you can make enough money to pay the rent. Once you're rocking heavies and put a lot of upgrades into your drop ship a lot of that early game tension dissipates.

More mechs like that, the Catapult, or the King Crab please. Even something like the Hunchback, which still falls into the blocky robot human category but at least it's a little bit more unique. Hopefully they might add quad mechs in a future expansion. There are a few around in 3025 that look like giant bugs and dogs.

At the PDXcon event they said that all the new mech chassis get inherent modules that make them more useful in specific roles. The Assassin gets a module that makes it ignore a certain number of evasion pips when targeting.

The Flea is getting (at least) the FLE-4 and 15, the Assassin is getting the 21 and 101 variants, Vulcan the 2T and 5T. Those are the ones I can personally verify, according people at PDXcon we're also getting the Phoenix Hawk 1K, Rifleman 3C, Archer 2S on top of the 2R and maybe the Marauder 3D. I just got the stats from Sarna. I didn't know what variants we were getting.

Norton the First posted:I would love a sequel, because HBS is still a young company, and Battletech 2 could be the Dragonfall to Battletech's Shadowrun: Returns. I want them to incorporate what they've learned and make a leap forward. Yeah I don't see infantry and aircraft coming in the current game and they need to give the whole IP a good balance pass before they bring in Clanner tech. Crowdfunded games tend to be a bit haphazard in order to accommodate stretch goals and having to put together a team ASAP. Now that they're owned by Paradox and the first game has brought in a ton of cash they can make the next one with a proper budget and project planning.
