I've finally caved and watched Cohh's YT stuff from the start and I was pleasantly surprised by seeing that you can pick an "he, she, they" pronoun for the player's character. This is the only game I can think of (other than Sunless Sea) that allows it and it's a nice touch.

Guess what people are very mad about in battletech

Is the tabletop really that bad? I've played a few 1v1 games this week and it's pretty normal compared to any other tabletop game

Aim gun, add like 2 modifiers, roll

Roll again

Check off damage boxes

Then most mechs kinda look lovely on their own and the miniatures from what I've seen aren't great

Catalyst is a mess. I'm pretty sure you can't even get copies of the tabletop rules anymore, I looked on Amazon and they don't have the core rules and the expansions are going for 5-10k dollars

fire lb 20-x at target
roll 2d6 to see if it hits
roll 2d6 to see how many pellets hit (6-20, depending on this result)
for each pellet, roll 2d6 for location. if you roll a 2, roll 2d6 to determine if you get 0, 1, 2, or 3 crits
for each crit, roll d6 or 2d6 depending on whether it's a leg/head or a arm/torso location
if you hit a location that's roll again, roll again

if the target took a bunch of damage in the firing phase, or ammo exploded, or had any of a bunch of crits happen, roll to see if the target falls down
if the target falls down, roll for damage (including potential crits)
if the target falls down, or if there was an ammo explosion, or if there was a hit to the head, apply pilot damage and roll 2d6 to see if they black out

you can easily end up rolling 2d6 30 times for a single mech firing a single weapon

I thought you grouped damage together with cluster weapons

So last time I ever even heard of Battletech was back when I was a kid and a game came out? And you could join fun group names like the SMOKE JAGUARS and the ANGRY WOLVES and poo poo like that. '

Now here this is all about Houses and Davion and Steiner and Marik and whatnot. Are the SMOKE JAGUARS still around? Are they members of a House? How does that all work.

I looked at the Wiki and apparently the SMOKE JAGUARS are a clan, which is.....a group that used to be the military of the psuedo Federation before a civil war, that now live in the outskirts of the galaxy. But how do the Houses fit into that. Or are the Houses the people that run the inner parts of the galaxy, while the clans are the groups that run the outer parts of the galaxy?

And then the rim which this game is set takes place in the inbetween bits?

Who owns Earth in all of this?

....will we get to see the SMOKE JAGUARS in this game.

Also I helped kickstarter this game because XCOM with mechs sounded awesome. If I know nothing about armor values, and what each mech is known for, and what an LSAM is, will I be fine going into this. Or is there a primer somewhere I should go look at.

1. No smoke jaguars or any other clans in this game, the clans have not invaded the inner sphere

2. The inner sphere is the extent of human colonized space, with earth at it's center

3. The inner sphere is comprised of half a dozen successor states to the Star League. The Star League was a Roman Empire in Space kinda deal

4. The inner sphere states are mostly feudal or dictatorships and are ruled by ruling families known as Houses.

5. Earth is controlled by Comstar. Comstar is basically Comcast mixed with The Papal State. It is more powerful and somehow more evil than both. They control all technological development, ancient technology and communication.

6. The clans left the inner sphere and are unknown to the inner sphere. They want to invade to restore the Star League.

7. In terms of size, the inner sphere is an insignificant portion of the milky way, not a whole galaxy

I just saw the character customization and it says, "pronoun". That's way too weird. Can you add the option so I can specifically pick male or female? It breaks immersion not to specify sex with absolute clarity. The pronoun is just way too vague and political because it's not logical. Other than this issue, the rest of the game looks great, thanks for hearing me out.

Just to clarify, I don't mind the pronoun option, but just please add a gender/sex tab so I can specifically know that my character has the correct anatomy. It's kind of weird and disturbing not knowing with absolute clarity that my character may not be male or female.

I'm sorry if I don't know how to speak in a way that doesn't offend anyone, I'm old school, sorry!

UPDATE: I want to thank the mods for not deleting my post and banning me. I'm very impressed you let me speak my mind and ideals. It's rare to not be banned by left leaning types. You have my deepest respects for letting me bring this issue up. Thanks.

My first complaint:

The description of the Capellan Confederation says it is a "socialist police state" however in the hover text for Capellan Confederation, it says that citizens have "total subservience of the individual to the state" and literally "service guarantees citizenship" which are textbook foundational philosophies of fascism, not socialism

Phi230

Xotl posted:

"Service guarantees citizenship" is only textbook fascism if you've read bad blogs about Starship Troopers: neither Italy nor Spain nor Portugal nor Germany had that as a requirement.

"Total subservience of the individual to the state" is a classic dictatorship model regardless of political foundation. Long story short, the CapCon a command economy (unlike the other Houses), so broadly "socialist". that it also features a service = citizenship model is not a commentary on how socialist states (or any states) are now, but rather a fictional construct for a fictional state 1,000 years in the future, where no state has a 1:1 analogue with any modern political construct (remember, this is a universe where space feudalism is the predominant system).

1. command economies are not socialist

2. subservience of the individual to the state is distinct from deferring to state authority, and in context of how the Caps are presented it is fascist in that every individual's value correlates to their contribution military mobilization of the state

"complete mobilization of society under a totalitarian one-party state as necessary to prepare a nation for armed conflict and to respond effectively to economic difficulties."

So just to ask the thread if I'm going in the right direction:

I've maximized the armor for the starting Blackjack totally, everywhere. I've got 1 AC/2 and 4 MLs + 3 heat sinks + 4 JJs. Is that a good build or should I sacrifice like 6 tons of armor to cram on another AC/2

AC/2s are kind of mediocre, they do the damage of an ML but just at longer range. You're better off just maxing that armor tbh. Hell I'd drop the other AC/2 and upgrade one of the MLs to a Large Laser.

I really don't see Paradox doing this. They seem to "get it" in a way that other publishers probably wouldn't. With luck it will do well enough that they can buy the license from Microsoft, BattleTech is right up their alley and my secret hope is that we'll get a Crusader Kings style grand strategy game set in the BattleTech universe out of it.

If you use the whole tabletop franchise, RPG + the entire battletech line, you can run and manage your own periphy states as a metagame to fighting in space on the ground. Kinda halfway to that point

I suspect the general lack of weapons might hurt the game's longevity. You have shotgun missles, indirect missiles, two flavors of longrange gun, mcpunch gun, big and small laser, mcsnipe laser, fire and then the gauntlet of weapons-for-punching. That doesn't really feel like much, in particular when you start specializing your robits into various ranges and roles.

Not a super deal breaker, I just think it'll lead to a certain amount of repetition.

This game's progression is kinda weird. As you get farther along, you start fielding heavier mechs with more weapons. Your enemies also field heavier mechs, so the extra damage is kinda balanced out by the higher durability all around. The main difference is that now everything moves agonizingly slowly. I miss the days when even my front-line tank mechs could zip around reasonably well.
