TV chat -- I have a 65" Costco Vizio in my family room. It's running 1080p fed by a Tivo Bolt using a cablecard though an HDMI cable after going through a Yamaha HDMI receiver. I was on vacation last week and the hotel had a ~50" LG fed by a coax cable showing about 60 channels. That LG was brutally sharp. Sharper than what I have at home by a damned sight. So... is the LG screen better because it's got a better pixel density? Is the Vizio just crap? Is the coax line feed better than what I'm using? I've seen sharpness improvements using over-the-air signals, but not from a cable feed...

So it looks like there are too many variables to really track it down, that's sad. The Vizio is about 2.5 years old. It was a mid-range unit. I'm looking to go to 70, but want to wait until whatever "the next big thing" is becomes mainstream. Thanks for the input.

Seeing your post reminded me that I never replied to you about the pdr tools. They are way too big and heavy to ship for any reasonable cost (big 3xshotgun case that weights ~70 pounds). And in all honesty, you can get a setup to test for way less than shipping cost for this set. The guy that sold me on PDR back in ~2005 said that he could do it with a screwdriver... and that really is the point. If you know how to do it, the tools just help you get access to hard-to-get-to dents. Look on eBay or Aliexpress for a lighted line board, get some knockdown tools and a couple whale tales. That will get you in the ring... then just start practicing on the ones you can reach. If you don't blow the gently caress out of them, then you can start expanding the tool collection...

I rented a Prius to see what they were like. I like the premise, and setting the dash to full-on video game mode is kinda fun, but I have never seen a more nagging, nanny-ing car in my life. Backup beeps for those inside the car only, hyperactive lane departure, all kinds of nags. But if the radar cruise thought it was too close to the car in front, it would fully turn disengage cruise without a peep. loving weird and annoying. So yeah, it was a very Florida trip.

LloydDobler posted:No worries, Amazon has a few comprehensive sets that look appealing as well. But actually you're right. I should spend like $20 to figure out if I have the patience on some easy to reach dents, and then stock up on tools if I want to reach all of them. The little hot glue bridge pullers are pretty fascinating too, that would be a way better solution on the roof of my wagon (over taking the headliner down), if I could get good at pulling a dent proud and tapping it back. I've got a glue puller and it's handy, but not a panacea. There's little control with it as to when and how it releases, and this leads to very-easy-to-make high spots. That leads to using the knockdown tool, which can lead to a mess. Yeah, thin metal with black paint... if you can make that look good, anything else would be cake. angryrobots posted:There is a very up to date thread in IYG about tvs, and deals on tvs. Thanks, I'm not looking to replace that one right now, but I am looking to got to a 55" for the bedroom. Ok guys, I need a suggestion on how to fix this problem. The bottom part of my lovely KitchenAid microwave handle pulled out. Looks like it was held in with just a thin bit of plastic. The handle pulled through, leaving a screw and washer in the handle, and a hole in the door: My first thought was to pull the door apart. They made that very difficult. There's an inside plastic liner , but underneath that is the door's metal frame, no way to get to the handle-securing area. The second thought was to just replace the whole loving door, since they don't sell door parts. But at $250, screw that noise. Third thought is to fill the hole with enough epoxy to shove the handle in there and hope it gets enough to grab. That seems a bit cavalier, though. So, AI, what say you is the best way to fix this?

Or if your kids are super hard on it drill it all the way through and use a lock washer, nut and locktite. Its already hosed so who cares. Seat Safety Switch posted:Can you cut through the interior frame to get access to the backside? There's a plastic trim ring, but behind that is a big, multiple-layered primary metal/glass door. There's no reasonable way to get to the back side of the handle. It looks like they assembled it, then wrapped the stainless around the assembly. To disassemble, I'd need to bend all of the tabs of the stainless, and there's just no way that thin metal will ever go back on and look reasonable. So I'm looking at securing from the front, into a blind, open hole. Not pretty, but there's a way... I'm confident.

I was thinking of something like that, but there's plastic inside the hole... what about using a plastic push connector glued inside the hole (I can cut it so that it goes in, but have the washer part expand when it goes through the hole), use some type of superglue to bond the plastics, and have the pin part of the push connector sticking out. Then, as a "step 2" use JB Weld or No More Nails or something, fill the cavity of the handle, then clamp it all together... I can see it in my head, I think it may work...

Maytag is Whirlpool, which is some other megacorp. That said, find a pre-damaged one! I am using a Maytag Nautilus top-load that has a terrible reputation because it's got a huge motor integrated into the bottom of the basket to make it direct-drive. Plus, it spins at a really high rate, so the bearing at the bottom takes a poo poo and nobody wants to touch it. Mom was quoted $800 for the repair. She got a new one, I took the old one and put a $60 bearing rebuild kit in it and it's been working fine for a couple years. At the same time, I also bought a matching Maytag dryer from craigslist that was broken. Got it for $50, a nice, big dryer with steam and all that jazz. Turns out the guy that had it never used the lint filter and this was another weirdo design that pulled air through the unit instead of blowing it in, so lint build-up burned up some stuff. But again, a few cheap parts and it's been working great. A lot of appliances are really simple and modular to repair, people are just too afraid to look inside when something breaks. Then there's my stupid microwave door handle that has parts not available.

I liked the christmas tree push pin idea, and ended up backing the existing screw out about 3/8" to have the screw head project into the cavity. I filled the cavity with as much JB Weld as I could make stick, then slathered more JB Weld on the handle side. Clamped and checked it 8 hours later... looks good so far.
