I set up our VoIP system at work to replace the UK 0844 number for Powwownow with the US number. Works out to be 1.5p per minute vs 13p, people get into the same conference but the prompts are read out with a US accent. SIP providers are dirt cheap and it's good.

You still need to pay for the line, but you can get a broadband service without a call plan or anything like that. The prices quoted now also have to include the line rental to end the "FREE FIBRE*" *line rental is £20 advertising. Vodafone is meant to be decent for an option at the cheaper end of things.

Skinty McEdger posted:Private Eye's piece on Grenfell is very good but grim reading. They lay out over two pages the history of the Tenant Management Organisation's attempts to ignore and deflect the residents concerns and the council's attempts to avoid engaging with it up including ignoring the recommendations of their own commissioned study into the situation in the block. I like Private Eye because it seems actual investigative work is dead everywhere else

Labour aren't the ones ejaculating into their pants about cutting red tape and how it's such a huge hindrance to housebuilding (it isn't). I see the whole thing as a problem of successive governments and the idea that you can allow people to certify their own work rather than have it vigorously inspected by a government department employee is bollocks. The emergence of building inspection firms that are known to be "easy" to get approvals from proves the whole system is hosed. The Tories can absolutely be blamed for their attitude of "what the gently caress do fire brigades know about fires", though. There's a rich vein of "I know best because I am an MP" running through that party. Thanks Ants fucked around with this message at 22:20 on Jun 28, 2017 |

This Labour public sector pay vote getting rejected is getting loads of news coverage. It looks like a very good play by Labour because it's going to be super easy to find people praising the emergency services and then see that they voted for a real-terms pay cut.
