I'm looking at putting together my first keyboard. I'm looking at the gk64x here:

https://smile.amazon.com/swappable-...084&sr=8-6&th=1

Does anyone have experience with this kit? If so, is it a good first hot swappable keyboard? I have a few mech keyboards with cherry blues and I'm currently typing on a model m. I'm new to the hot swappable keyboards though.

I was thinking about getting kailh navy or jade switches to go with this board from novelkeys:

https://novelkeys.xyz/products/novelkeys-x-kailh-box-thick-clicks

Would they work with that board? I know I need to get keycaps too but I haven't decided which ones to get yet.

If it’s your first board I’d get a sampler of navy and jade (and some others). Jade especially, it’s a LOT of click. Cheaper than committing to an entire board worth of switches

This is also a good idea. I have a board full of Jades and a board full of Navies and I like them both. Good to get a sampler to see which is a better feel for you.

That's a good idea. Found a Kailh Box Switch tester for $20 and I'm going to pick that up first. I was curios about some other switches too.

Opioid, what do you mean when you say Jade is a lot of click? Like it's loud?

GMMK Pro has an encoder. It's a bit pricey, $170, doesn't ship until Q2 some time, and you'll still need to buy switches and a keycap set.

My Womier/GamaKay K87 arrived! I am an instant fan of linear switches, hot drat. Maybe it's because I'm not used to them yet, but I don't really sense any ping or anything on the switches; I wonder what it'll be like once I get around to lubing and filming them?

I do think I'll need to get myself a wrist rest though, I'm already a little achy here.

This is exciting even if it'll take a little getting used to!

EDIT: just gonna use the attachable wrist rest from my Corsair for now. It'll have to do.

How's the quality on the Womier/GamaKay? I was considering their 65% board. I think I read a review where the switches don't snap into the keyboard so if you flipped it upside down they would fall out.

This one comes with red switches. Can change out the switches if you don't end up liking them.

If anyone is in the market for inexpensive switches, Novelkeys is having a pretty big discount sale right now: https://novelkeys.xyz/collections/clearance

The Kailh Polia's are very good tactiles -- similar to Holy Pandas with a nice round bump. At 30¢ a switch, they're more than half off their normal price and very much in the "budget" switch price range, but a much higher quality switch.

The BOX Crystal switches are also interesting as they're just clear top versions (good for boards with RGB) of the normal BOX clicky switches. Two of note are the Navy and Jade -- some of the most popular clicky switches on the market. If you like clicky switches, these are excellent. They're also only like $18 for 90, which makes them incredibly affordable.

Thanks! Just picked up some Hako Royal Clears!

Heads up, the BOX Crystal Jades are slightly different from the normal Jades.

Drop keyboard chat: Just picked up a Drop ALT. It's my "premium" keyboard since most of the things I own are made by razr or cooler master. It feels nice and it gets the job down. I expected to want to customize it a bit but I like it how it is. The one nice thing about Drop is that they have boards available all the time now. You don't have to be apart of a GB or wait months.

Thanks for all of the input on 75% keyboards. I think I'm just going to wait for my GMMK Pro. I like the 65% layout but I think a 75% layout would work better for work. I use the F keys a lot more than I realized. Might pick up a KBD67 Lite if they have extras or a Gamakay/Womier board so I can test out some of the extra switches I picked up.

Regular GMMK is an option. It's $110 with gateron brown switches and currently in stock. The gateron brown switches should be close to the cherry mx browns. If you don't end up liking the switches, you can change them later. The one downside is that it only takes 3 pin switches.

You can get a barebones version and then get your own keycaps and switches too. That might be a little more pricey.

I think I would wait on the GMMK Pro and see how the Keychron Q1 turns out. Going to second replacing the stabilizers. Mine were so overlubed the keys were sticking. Couldn't replace the stabilizers because the screws were so tight I couldn't get them off. GMMK's customer service is good and they're sending me a replacement board though.

Going to recommend the AVX works plate to go with it, if for nothing else, cuts down on the number of screws.

If you're just looking to test switches, why not something cheaper like a RK61? I think they're about $50-60. They're hot swappable. You can replace the stabilizers and add foam to the case.

Thank you for the recommendations! Is there any particular reason for the KBD67 over a cheaper board, like the AWS68 or the GK68? Or maybe a complete board like the Womier 66 or the Keychron K6? It doesn't seem to have any special features so maybe it's a case or quality control thing?

The kbdfans67 will have a more premium case. KBDFans67 is Via compatible so you'll be able to remap keys or change the RGB via the firmware. You can remap keys with software for the Womier or Keychron but if you change computers you'll have to remap everything via software. If you remap via firmware, it stays regardless of which computer you use. The KBDFans67 will have more customization options. You can swap the case, find premade foam, and change the plate. You can't do that with the Keychron or a Womier keyboard.

In short, if you're interested in customizing, get a more premium board like the KBDFans67. If you just want something that works and don't want to fiddle with it past keycaps and switches, Womier or Keychron will fit your needs just fine.
