Just picked up the Razer PBT set to renew a ~7 year old Ducky board that came with ABS caps

Feels really nice and it's only 30bux. Comes with everything for ISO, ANSI, US and UK layouts.

A decent-but-not-expensive PBT set is one of the best upgrades you can do for an inexpensive board that comes with ABS caps. It doesn't mean you have to start joining group buys or becoming a :homebrew: collector. One set is all you need, $40 for some PBT caps will last many years before you even have wear on the surface texture. This is exactly what I did a long time ago -- I bought a rosewill during the first wave of mechanical popularity, then put some PBT caps on it after a year.

The Razer PBT set is a nice option for this, it's only $30 and comes with both ANSI and ISO keys (AFAIK the more boutique sets tend to be ANSI only)

Yep, it's a common feature nowadays

The bullet point to look for is "N Key Rollover" or NKRO

I fancy building up a tactile switch tester to get a feel for what exists outside of the MX Brown bubble, is there a good list anywhere of the most relevant ones nowadays?

I found this but I don't know how complete it is: https://switchandclick.com/top-5-best-tactile-switches-for-your-mechanical-keyboard/

There's a good store here I can order single switches from but it's pretty overwhelming, they have over 120 different tactiles in stock

The upcoming Keychron Q1 is quite similar to the GMMK Pro, if you can wait a little while

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

Traditional full-size seems very hard to come by in the enthusiast space, but there are some compressed layouts that keep the numpad

Maybe this? https://drop.com/buy/drop-shift-mechanical-keyboard

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

Keychron may actually fill that gap, they've mentioned amongst the Q1 stuff they plan to make a bunch of size variants including full size

The next release after the Q1 is an even smaller 65% version though, the bigger versions will come later

Thanks, got my tester in today... people weren't kidding about MX Browns having almost no tactility compared to just about anything else today :v:

noob takes
- drat zealios are insanely loud for a tactile switch
- drat zilents are underwhelming compared to U4s at half the price

I think the U4 will be my first choice if/when I build something, currently waiting to see how the Q1 turns out

Speaking of Bobas, is there any reason not to get the clear-top versions? I noticed they're the same price as the opaque versions and can't think why you wouldn't get the clear versions, unless the opaque housings have better tolerances or something.

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

They already revealed the early bird pricing on their Discord

$139 for barebones
$169 with Gateron switches and doubleshot ABS caps
$29 for a top-right position metal badge with custom printed graphic

The knobless version also has a switch socket in the top right position, so if you remove the badge you can have an extra key there

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

Also they just emailed this demonstration out, showing the stock switches and the PBT sets they will be selling as extras

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8ZgD3QQTqY

Looks good to me, but I'm holding out for the ISO version

nice

Reviews will go live on or before the 24th apparently, the day pre-orders begin

Hopefully it's an improvement over the GMMK Pro

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

Apparently the FC660M uses a weird non-standard spacebar (it's standard 6.25u wide but the mounting points aren't in the standard position) so you're probably SOL unless you can find a keycap set specifically designed for that keyboard.

It looks like Tai-hao used to make FC660M add-on kits with the weird spacebar but I can't see them for sale anymore

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

If it's delayed past the 24th at least that means you can find out whether the Q1 is the better buy, while it's still easy to cancel your order

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

How about 75%s? I'm still eyeing up the Keychron Q1 but if it ends up being junk I'm not adverse to getting a soldered kit instead

The Tofu84 sticks out as a babbies first custom 75%, but it's tray mount and people seem to be souring on that style

I just want to build a quiet board with Boba U4s, so it doesn't matter if a board has the wrong kind of clack or whatever keyboard nerds obsess over

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

Yeah the GMMK Pro is the other obvious one, but it just seems like no end of issues with bad QC and shoddy software/firmware

The Q1 being designed with QMK/VIA first rather than an afterthought should hopefully mean things go more smoothly

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

What's especially off-putting is that Glorious say they're switching to a different MCU around about now, which will break the existing QMK support, and given their half assed support for QMK so far (AFAICT they never got around to adding RGB or ISO or VIA support, and the community had to reverse engineer them) I don't have much confidence in the updated board being supported any time soon, or ever.

fwiw, RGB support in QMK/VIA is fully implemented for the OG controller GMMK Pros. QMK just hasn't merged the development branch into the master which is set to happen this week.

I've been running QMK for a few weeks now and everything has worked without issues. 1000Hz polling rate, all RGB patterns (including the optional reactive ones), layers, etc....

They're still being cagey on the controller switch which is weird and lovely, but it sounds like they're still shipping QMK compatible controllers for now.

Following up on this, they've finally posted an update on the MCU situation

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/pbm5za/gmmk_pro_postlaunch_report/

tldr: they managed to source more of the original MCU and will continue using it for the forseeable future, and they say the potential replacement MCU already has a QMK implementation ready to go if required

Drop Skylight is missing the 1u right modifiers for the GMMK Pro

You need a 1.75u shift, 1u alt, 1u fn, 1u ctrl, and ideally vertical nav cluster keys

Glorious have backlit sets as well, if you like the pudding style

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

I'm drawing a blank

Gamer-oriented sets tend to be backlit but not support exotic layouts, and enthusiast-oriented sets tend to support many layouts but not be backlit. And the exceptions all seem to be pudding or not in the colours/material you're looking for.

I was wondering about that. Is there a standard-ish size for the shrunk keys, or am I going to be hunting for proprietary shapes when I want to upgrade the caps?

The shrunk keys are the same across pretty much all 65%/75% boards

If you want a cheap set to go with the K2, Keychron themselves have a bunch of them

They'll fit in any hotswap board that takes 5-pin switches, but if your board only takes 3-pin you'll need to clip the switches to remove the two alignment pins

repiv
Aug 13, 2009

I switched from MX Browns to Boba U4 62gs recently and they haven't given me any trouble when gaming, for what it's worth

If you do find them too heavy on your pinky you could try putting lighter switches just on left shift and left control

Days like today I hate that this is a niche hobby so we can't take advantage of economies of scale.
