Goon Danton posted:It's entirely possible for that to be the case, and more likely the poorer you are. Someone's life getting worse has very little to do with them being a lovely person or not being worth knowing. There are plenty of lovely billionaires. Someone's life getting worse, no. That's no reason to disassociate. Their life solely getting worse, or especially everyone they know's lives solely getting worse, for a long period of time? That's a recipe for disaster. One should make it their singular focus to get out of that environment if they find themselves in it. Which could be hard, yeah, but if they're posting here the odds are that it's not outside their power. e: I wasn't just speaking economically. I was interpreting the poster as saying "As the stock market has gone up, everyone I knows life has gotten worse" as being a more general statement about the level of satisfaction of the people they're surrounded with. if that's the perception, it seems like a problem. Why is this advice upsetting to you all? I'm not saying to abandon someone when tragedy befalls them. I'm saying to pick your friends carefully and not surround yourself with people who will drag you down. Misery loves company, and you should work to get away from perpetual victims, who do exist. This is something that you can do in order to have a better life.

Ostensibly, if your friend is homeless, food insecure, running from a cop who is trying to murder them, etc, you help them. You both make efforts to improve your situations. Their life improves. Thus they are not a perpetual victim. If you asked them, "has everything gotten shittier and shittier for you over the last few years?" they'll say some form of "Well yeah, poo poo happened, but it wasn't all bad, and I'm lucky to have friends who helped me" there are some who will take the assistance, and still bemoan their circumstances. come on stop strawmanning, owning property and renting it out, especially in a thoughtful manner which benefits all parties, such as in that poster’s case, isn’t immoral and isn’t analogous to being a private prison guard. they probably couldn’t become a banking executive so that’s silly too.
