Jose posted:lol everyone wants their own service not seeming to realise why people liked only paying for netflix I honestly wonder how many of these media companies actually ran their numbers on this and came to the conclusion that the target demos of streaming services can manage to have any more than like, three at any time. Sure, a lot of us do account sharing, but even then the price of having to maintain multiple subscriptions defeats a great deal of the purpose from a cost-cutting perspective. Then, on top of that, I have to have a bunch of different apps on my tv or phone or whatever and it's never easy to figure out what service a show is on, except for on Roku which actually tells you if you search for something. I'm baffled to think that any exec could think this was a good idea. The kids know how to use Bittorrent and shady Kodi extensions and I'm sure they're not afraid to go back to using them when they can't afford 10 different streaming services. I know part of the gameplan here is exclusivity on some shows, but I don't think that will work to anyone's favor with the exception of HBO and Disney. In the case of those two, there are enough exclusives of a consistent quality that people are actually going to give a poo poo. For others, though? I don't think there is as strong of a case. For example, when Kanye West's The Life of Pablo came out, I signed up for a Tidal sub so I could listen to it right away. Once it dropped on Spotify, I canceled my trial and never paid a dime for Tidal again. For companies like NBCUniversal, I can't think of very many shows that I care enough about to warrant $5/mo. If Viacom were to take Daria off Hulu and put it behind their own service, I'd likely just buy the DVDs off eBay. None of this makes sense.

I don't understand how an industry can continue to be successful when it's accepted that the people in charge are just going to be stupid constantly. Eventually it's got to hurt the bottom line, right?

I definitely think Sarah Jeong has the right idea here: Uber and Lyft are designed in such a way that prices are so low that a living wage is impossible, their employees aren't actually employees, there's only money being lost because of low fares, and scabbing is built-in. She doesn't think that a strike was completely pointless, but her concern here is that a tech company has built a system in which people are underpaid and have to eventually be automated out to be profitable, but even being underpaid is still better than anything else some of these people can get, and that's terrible.

Kung Food posted:I still haven't heard a good explanation of why Uber is so unprofitable. The drivers front all the vehicle costs so what do they have for overhead other than servers and accompanying computer janitors? Have you ever seen how low the fares are? There's no room for profit, and the reason it's so low is to choke out competitors that are trying to do the same tactic.
