With the US is internally destabilized by a schism between the executive and legislative over nazi riot, North Korea takes the opportunity to flex its nuclear muscle. Somewhere in the afterlife, Tom Clancy smiles proudly. "They don't need me anymore."

Ceiling fan posted:From my perspective on blue water sailing, yes, watch is boring and it is also really hard to stay awake while doing watch on watch off in the dead of night. You stay awake scanning that horizon anyway because you want to stay not dead. My favorite kind of skipper usually woke up the instant the AIS proximity or collision course alarm went off, and he expected us to be able to immediately point at the other ship's running lights. Then he'd get on the radio to make sure the other ship's bridge knew that we were out there. If he didn't get an answer, he'd stay up there staring angrily at the screen until whoever it was fell off the edge of the map. Because who knows what other kinds of fuckups are going on over there. Hey I'm the guy who used to drive the freighters your skipper was so worried about. We thought he was an absolute dolt. The VHF is not a collision avoidance tool. Don't loving talk to me unless you have good reason to.

Ceiling fan posted:Asking a freighter why they made a course change that put them on a collision course with a sailing vessel broadcasting on AIS at 0300 isn't a good reason to use VHF. Got it. The guy's an idiot who's following the yellow line on the magic box. Talking to him - if he speaks English - won't make him less of an idiot. Change course. You know, like the rules say you should do. In five years at sea, I never once heard a collision avoidance discussion with a pleasure craft that wasn't a complete waste of time. And I've never heard a collision avoidance discussion outside of pilotage water that didn't dissolve into hilarious - but useless - screaming in butchered English. "YOU CROSS MY BOW I KILL YOU I KILL YOUR WHOLE FAMILY!" Type stuff. You've got a rudder, use it. Don't use the VHF for collision avoidance. Unless you're RAM or NUC.

None of the states have tried to secede yet, he hasn't been forced to resign following an espionage scandal and he hasn't blockaded a neighbouring country over nuclear brinksmanship. The bar for presidential turmoil is set pretty high. On the other hand, he's six months into a four year term.

Bored As gently caress posted:The industrial control systems (ICS) that control practically every part of commercial shipping vessels (especially navigation) are extremely vulnerable to hacking / spoofing / outright destruction. It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility. Those systems are far from integrated, and there are still humans in the loop. Even if everything on the bridge hosed up, people are yet to figure out a way to hack windows, and the guy on watch should have seen the destroyer and turned. The Speed 2: Cruise Control scenario is still science fiction, and that movie had plot holes big enough to sail a ship through. The vast, vast majority of the fluff in articles about GPS or AIS spoofing bing used to hijack cargo ship is sensationalist bullshit.

Madurai posted:I am old, and thus remember when SS Manhattan did it in--what? 1971? Manhattan had a two icebreaker escort. Ships have been doing the Northwest Passage unassisted for a while now, albeit occasionally. Every few years a shipping company will pull a stunt like this and get media attention, it's basically meaningless. This is a good ice year, meaning there's not a whole lot of ice in the Arctic. It's a single data point, not a sure fire sign of global warming. Is the trend worrysome? drat right. Arc7 is between PC 3 and 4. That thing is an icebreaker. Wake me up when they pull that poo poo in the winter and turn a profit doing it.

Waroduce posted:I worked for Accenture and MBAs are loving idiots. If my project lead or client liaison was an MBA poo poo was always waaaaay harder than it needed to be Truth. I ended up being the subject matter expert on a lot of poo poo at my old job; for some reason the MBAs didn't like my "negative attitude" when it came to their projects being physically impossible or downright illegal (think "we'd need to dredge for ten years or so" or "that would be a flagrant violation of the Jones Act.", not nitpicky poo poo). I no longer work there, the MBA's all got promoted and the business unit is failing in a spectacular fashion. From the few classes I've taken, the MBA curriculum is so focused on success stories, they never get to the "accept the things you can't change" and "some poo poo is downright impossible" parts. I shudder to think of the result when one applies that kind of thinking in a military context.
