Is that not the point of holden's character though? He's so different mentally that it is much easier for him to relate to and be intrigued by the mindset of the killers and the insights they have. It's why he's able to do the interview/confession scenes so drat well. Obviously this is going to come off as somewhat annoying for the viewer but it is needed for his character to work.
