Gearslutz is perfect because at the end of the day whats wrong with being a slut for pro audio gear?

I had an easier time getting on board for the ones w/ more obviously sexist/homophobic readings, like Muffwiggler (which still felt a bit like people wanting the place to be something it just wasn't). I totally get the argument that it's embarassing that it's become the de facto home for discussions around this stuff that are professional in nature, and that no one in their right mind would want to be associated with it, but I think you'd have to do a lot more than change the name of the forum to deal with that.

I saw that and rolled my eyes and thought of the thread but also - what's a normal production number for a major brand guitar? I imagine like american pro II strats vs yamaha pacifica numbers are different (I'm curious about both tbh), I'm just trying to get a sense of how small these Gibson runs are.

Yeah, playing interesting things and writing interesting things are separate (but related) skills, you gotta develop both of them, and there's only so many hours in the day.

Corollary to this is the KLF thing - I think writing a number 1 single is probably more challenging than playing (maybe even writing) an entire prog concept album, even if it seems simpler mechanically when broken down. This tension between commercial and artistic success gives rise to a phenomenon I like to call "the music industry"

Spoon.

I mean, I'm not complaining, I have downloaded a bunch of dumb jam stuff from there.

I'm just flabbergasted at this guy's extremely defensive take on "indi-rock" with a band that's basically always been...not nearly anything like the sex pistols

what is the unwanted element? soap?

if he was complaining about one of the hip-hop acts on the bill, it would at least be some kind of dumb true-to-type thing, but nowhere near as funny

hahaha probably in the mix!

I am 100% assuming the reviewer is a white guy with dreads who's been on tour his whole adult life, because those are the people I remember caring about this kind of thing in 2007. not defending! just the scene was in a very whack place post phish 2.0/pre Furthur

I'm a musician and when people follow that up with what instrument I play I could technically answer that I'm a guitarist but that feels weird because I'm pretty bad at it and the stuff I make available publicly is electronic rave music that I sequence. Calling myself a synthesist or a player of the sampler feels forced (if I played live ever e: or played keys ever, keyboardist might work, but I don't).

So producer's been my go to but if you have a better idea lmk

Is there a monolithic disparaging term for music that's only ever listened to by dudes who play guitar, or wish they played guitar? I'm thinking of every song you only ever see mentioned in a guitar magazine, or forum post, like Hendrix, Clapton, Vai, Satriani, The Weather Report, and modern stuff like Animals as Leaders and Polyphia.

Prog

JamesKPolk
Apr 9, 2009

you're right he's more like proto-prog

less facetiously, I don't think the same thing is happening w/ hendrix/clapton as w/ vai, malmsteen, petrucci, satriani, polyphia/animals as leaders (which yeah is totally a thing) - people just like classic rock with good guitar, it's a similar appeal to led zeppelin imo. or dire straits. (clapton being an rear end in a top hat colors this a bit)

Weather report I have only ever encountered as good jazz fusion supergroup w/ Shorter getting talked up most but I could see Jaco worship being a thing. but then the only people I know who like fusion are musicians or otherwise overly studied so maybe there is something there.

the prog-fusion continuum maybe
