So it turns out all the old school Command and Conquer sound-tracks are on Spotify. This trip down memory lane ultimately lead me to this and I can't decide if its stupid or awesomely stupid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_qPFFem6UU

in terms of music backed by drum machines, there's always these guys who do ridiculous stuff with hard-panned symbols and crazy beats. It's like a musical tension heachache, I adore it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm4FDgcmTFY

They also had a sideproject that was much faster. Still just 2 men and a drum machine, but more metal (strong Godflesh/Bolt Thrower vibes)

To bring it back to stupid music poo poo, they're "promo" videos used to be great. Like this one taking the piss out of boutique pedals and black metal purists:

Fretboard talk has led us full circle into tone being almost all in the hands, not the gear.

IMO as long as your getting a sound out of an instrument in a way that feels natural and that other people enjoy, who cares. If you're not missing strings or unnecessarily bending notes who cares how you hit the strings.

I started on bass originally and just moved most of my left hand over to guitar, and I've found that whatever rudimentary bass lessons I had have not been reflected in any other guitarist's techniques. I was told to hold firm to the fretboard just on the off-side of the fret itself. Not ever going to claim that as the definitive way but it works for me- it also helps with muscle memory as my left hand knows where the frets are without looking a lot of the time. My two main guitars now are a Fender Cabronita tele and an Ibanez RGD 7 string and I play both fine with the same ape fisted technique.

Its about feel and sound. It's why we play. It's why seeing bassists who play lines I've written with a pick bugs me but I don't dare say anything.

I think its also a product of the bedroom studio thing.

People have had PODs and even with the money AX-FX and easy access to recording software and drum machines (Superior Drummer and the like) for over a decade now.

It means that playing to metronomes and clicks and stuff is way more of a thing now then playing "in the pocket" or to a natural groove in a live rehearsal setting. Especially with these youtube people who are writing and producing all this stuff at home on their own.

It makes for very precise and technical playing but it can seem sanitized and dull because its all about being machine accurate.

I remember before my first gig I dyed my hair purple and was stressing about what to wear. I also asked the singer/guitarist if there was anything he wanted to rehearse for the stage to try and get the audience moving and he said "we are not there to entertain people" which is maybe the dumbest thing I've ever heard about performing music and inspired me to look really goofy on stage compared to him.

This triggered a memory.

When I was working at a liquor store once a middle aged couple came in asking for advice.

"We're looking to get a friend a congradulations present but know nothing about alcohol."

"OK, well maybe I can help, who are you buying it for?"

"A man who plays the cello."

There was a bit of silence as I tried to understand why they would lead with that and what to ask next, and after a beat the guy says, " you know, the cello!" and started miming playing a cello.

"Yes, I know what a cello is. Do you know what he drinks?"

"No, but I was thinking spirits in the $15 range."

I told them to rethink the gift.

can confirm, American made Fenders need Imperial keys.

Screamo and deathcore was always toxic dude music about impotent rage and being jilted outsider nerds.

I was watching the local music video show here last week and the guest programmer was running through a bunch of post-hardcore and screamo bands and the amount of videos that are dudes in their mid to late 20s rocking out high schools and making out with "teens" was easily 3/4 of them.

Just screaming about how they could never get dates and women are whores or cheaters while the visuals fantasise about grown adults getting with
high schoolers.

I mean it's not something specific to those genres but it's certainly a big part of them and their appeal to their target audience.

Not sure where to post this but I need to share with someone. This thread is appropriate due to my obnoxious history in its first iteration:

Today I celebrate three years since my last drink of alcohol, and I celebrate by gathering my work clothes (the ones that are not too baggy since I lost 90 lbs. after getting sober, and am at 179 today heading back down to 165 after the holidays) for my orientation day tomorrow at my new job. It pays better than my last job, is hybrid office/remote, and has good benefits including bonuses.

Even though the last two years since I left my last job have been dark at times, I've avoided being the rear end in a top hat I used to be when I was drunk every day.

You can do anything you set your mind to, if you want it enough and learn from your mistakes. I'm still learning, but I have a new lease on life.

Stupid Music Chat: That MESA/Boogie looks incredible, and I love John Sykes, he is a terrifying guitarist.

Cheers!
