In the past Mercury simulation, I noticed The Traveler is in the sky. Is the simulation of when the Vex first arrived on Mercury? Or is it just them simulating from that point onward? Cause if the Vex were there at the same time that The Traveler was terraforming, it certainly feeds into the "We're the baddies" theory. I kept expecting some huge revelation about the nature of the Vex.

Bummed the new planet is so small, smaller than Titan.

Hell, *we* could have made the Vex at some point, and they runaway succeeded?!

On the real, though, I've noticed that the environments in Curse of Osiris are *much* larger feeling than the ones from the Vanilla planets, even though I guess Mercury is tiny:

This one's from the adventure (just an adventure, too!) where you go disrupt the Fallen simulation in the Forest. Huge Arecibo antenna array or whatever the Vex are doing here:

On that mission where you go put your fist through the Nessus crypto-mind or whatever, I even realized I'd forgotten how tall The Tangle was.
I used my Scout rifle MUCH more frequently, instead of just bowling through everything with Uriel's. I like this change of engagement range, and feel it portends good things:

(This top image is the one where I realized I was going to have to switch to my Scout, you can tell.)

I also found myself thinking, "Wow, I wish this was a Crucible map" at most points through campaign, especially the fourth, Mars-ish palletted image above, and this one in the Gardener's Spire. The Spire in particular would be some super fun tight-but-vertical shootmans if you had a bunch of jump pads around:

Imagine, Crucible in the Infinite Forest tho. Fighting on a changing landscape... the spawn points would probably be hell on the map team.

Dear bungo,

This Forest set piece would make a neat Crucible map if scaled up, side-balanced(?) and elaborated on.
Maybe situated inside a large cave, with some neat fog or vex milk geysers to conveniently obscure particular long lines of sight depending on how it scaled

This may just be the part of me talking that enjoys Waldo World Arena on net gather though.

This Past Mercury area on Bug in the System would be extremely awesome to Shaxx around in too.
Another circular arena, pretty large; you could make the walls on this infinitely high and change it to mazed corridor-engagements outside the center pylon instead of an open-field/trenches with jetpacks style thing:

"sitting around"

Cross-pollination and sharing information/expertise/experience can be worthwhile, but it has a non-trivial cost. Only so much you can get done thru email and phone calls, and remote meetings (even with current technology) aren't the same as a colleague 20 yards away - especially when it's not even with the same studio. It's also time that the Blizzard devs aren't working on their primary assignments, and that gets tricky with milestones and dependencies. And then there's pride to deal with, like do Bungie execs really want the perception that they need to be saved (again) by a different company. Is the benefit worth the cost? Maybe. I'd need a lot more information and expertise to feel comfortable making that call.

While I realize I hardly speak for the salty-rear end videogaming community, I wouldn’t perceive that as, “being saved,” I’d perceive that as, “two gaming companies who I have liked and respected for over two decades gettin’ down to bidness.”

To avoid the “saved” perception, work would have to be impressive, presented cleanly, and earnestly tackled. Hell, Bungie could just BlogPost the words, “We have Taken on <img_Oryx, maniacal laughter> some members of Blizzard’s team for our own. We would like to welcome them on board on their rotation. This is their community liason, <name of person who doesn’t mind being canonized/demonized in dev-sainthood forever alongside DeeJ Cosmo and Luke because they have a one-or two syllable name that’s easy for an angry community to regurgitate cluelessly>“

100% agreed. I thought (from what was presented, anyway) bringing in Mosqueira was a humble and inspired idea, and it was ultimately effective. The perception of savior is entirely within the lens of ignorant & reductive gamer culture (which as much as I hate and hope dies soon, is still A Thing), and with having worked with smart & skilled folks. It doesn't happen every time but sometimes pride gets in the way, especially when dealing with smart & skilled folks who have also been successful.

I think it's more that people need to learn to scale their response to be proportional to the fault at hand. When everything is an apocalyptic disaster it's hard to sieve out what the real problems are and whether (as a company) it's worth responding to them. IMO moving prestige content out of the game when you paid for it is a bigger problem than the "scaling XP but not so bad that BE's were that hard to get" but everyone sorta blew their load on the first one and now it just sounds like whining.

But we're talking about internet nerds here so lol

It kinda baffles me that Bungie doesn't make a pass through the exotics (and the legendary weapons for that matter) to buff the ones that are clearly underpowered and underused. I'm sure they log which are the most/least used exotics/legendaries, but they leave in place a status quo where there are like a handful of useful exotics that everyone uses. My guess is that they are afraid to touch things because of pvp balance. Sorta related - I wish they'd just add a "banned" category of gear that you can't take into pvp so they can do wackier stuff for pve.

That happened on December 5th, which is why we are discussing the viability of Fighting Lion now, where previously it was not liked:

quote:

Exotic Amor

- Mask of the Quiet One no longer grants energy when the wearer takes damage from friendly players
- Shield Bash now triggers the Dreaded Visage perk on Mask of the Quiet One
- Slightly increased the damage dealt by ACD/0 Feedback Fence
- Kills with the Fury Conductors perk on ACD/0 Feedback Fence now show correct icon in the kill feed
- Adjusted the grenade recharge granted by Starfire Protocol to compensate for the global decrease in the second grenade recharge rate
- Improved ready and stow speed on Peacekeepers
- Added an additional perk to Lucky Pants that loads a single bullet to the chamber of a stowed Hand Cannon whenever the player scores a precision hit with any weapon
- Reworked Karnstein Armlets in two ways: on a melee hit, the armlets now provide heightened Mobility and Recovery and highlight low-health targets; and scoring a melee kill immediately restores a significant amount of the wearer’s health
- Fixed an issue with Dunemarchers where the Linear Actuators perk was not triggering consistently
Weapons

General

- Increased the base damage and reduced the precision modifier of Precision Auto Rifles
- Slightly reduced the aim deflection of High-Caliber Rounds on Auto Rifles and Scout Rifles
- Reduced the effectiveness of Aim Assist at higher ranges on Scout Rifles (This was a hit to MIDA, which has 100 aim assist. This is why people love it at long ranges.)
- Reduced severity of recoil on Hakke High-Impact Auto Rifles
- Hand Cannon accuracy recovery now scales with rate of fire
- Improved base Aim Assist on aggressive Hand Cannons
- Slightly increased the rate of fire time between bursts on all Omolon Sidearms This was a hit to Last Hope
- Slightly increased impact damage on lightweight single-shot Grenade Launchers
- Fixed an issue with the Tireless Blade Sword perk where players could sometimes get sword ammo from an unpowered sword attack This was a hit to Uppercut swords
- Fixed an issue where the Infinite Guard perk would drain ammo when guarding in a Healing Rift
The Relentless Strikes sword perk no longer returns ammo on heavy attacks This was a hit to Uppercut swords
- When comparing Sniper Rifle stats the UI correctly updates for maximum magazine values
- Fixed an issue with Ambitious Assassin to make it more consistent

Exotic Weapons

- Increased Fighting Lion damage and changed Thin the Herd perk to now grant bonus ammo rather than pulling ammo from the player inventory
- Shooting destructible objects with Graviton Lance, Sunshot, Merciless, Sturm, and Drang no longer trigger the Exotic weapon perks
- Fixed an issue with D.A.R.C.I’s Target Acquired perk to make it more consistent

I'm excited about the ACD/0 and the Mask of the Quiet One changes.

Yeah, they fiddled with some of them, but I still feel like there is a ton of content that is still just not worth using compared to the alternatives. I find it really lame to do those weapon cube quests in the expansion and end up with, say, a scout rifle that is clearly nowhere near as good as nameless/mida.

To me, your feeling is probably public-derived; people don’t pay much attention to most guns outside what the internet/meta tells them to. They’re not necessarily wrong, they’re just committing to being predictable.

I am all about this guy, because Dynamic Sway Reduction is a great perk. Instead of your bullet grouping getting looser as you hold the trigger, it TIGHTENS UP. This is great for engagements at range, and also hilarious on SMGs:

Edit: Yes explosive rounds is basically never not good, on any gun, and I’m glad people discovered that, this is important to remember as the game develops. I used to have a Badger CCL in D1 (max impact scout) with explosive rounds; it 1shot trash mobs, and was heinously good.

You're probably right considering I mostly ignore weapons with lower than a 4 or so rating on DIM. I probably need to branch out more and try stuff that is outside of the "meta".

Yeah, this is the thing that got me to make the post really. I got that fancy new 3 shot burst hand cannon, and while it is pretty darn good, it doesn't kill stuff nearly as fast as my better devils so it feels like a complete waste even if it wasn't taking up my exotic weapon choice.

Not every gun is good....but not every player carefully reads perks that might nicely suit their playstyle, or be something that they can work in if they think about it.

Better Devils is just straight crispy and it will be a sad day of poured out 40s when they nerf it.

I feel like Bungie tries to “train” its playerbase with the meta. For Positive Outlook, the new Vanguard AR with Armor Piercing Rounds, they mashed up everyone’s two favorite Auto Rifles from vanilla: Origin Story and Uriel’s Gift.

“Oh, yeah, you guys remenber HCR from D1? Yeahhh, remember those? Check out this sweeeet 450rpm chunky AR that melts stuff. Alright, now that you guys DEFINITELY remember that, here’s their beefy friend, APR. Both are crispy, but can you feel/see the difference?”

Hard examination of a weapon’s veracity STRICTLY in terms of TTK is kind of fallacious because no combat scenario you engage in will exist in that vacuum of pure numbers.

Like, as bad as an opposing player may be, nobody is going to stand still to give you that “ideal” TTK case. Someone or something WILL be shooting back at you, dropping your shields, maybe even with those flinch-causing High Caliber Rounds, which causes YOU to miss a shot, thus reducing your TTK, and by the time you’ve completed this thought you’re dead because the other guy landed all his.

To be honest you can pick any 140rpm Kinetic Handcannon aside from Better Devils and do just as good if not better if you happen to click better with whatever perks it has. Better Devils happens to be the meta because it has really easy sights, minimal kick (Sunshot doesn't really recoil and throw off your aim when you fire it but good lord the whole loving gun flies into your face and makes it harder to do follow up shots) and explosive rounds let you tickle near dead people behind cover and distract opponents with the flash when hitting them. I was playing Trials with a dude whose computer would just eat poo poo and drop FPS when hit by BDs so that's a pretty big advantage though.

This is why I like True Prophecy, the FWC hand cannon; it’s Better Devils, just delayed a little. Wish its Needler-perk explosion radius was a little bigger so I could skill in double kills on low health jerks.

That thing about graphically bogging down sucks and should be addressed imo, although I’d be interested to see if there’s a graphics settings threshhold where that’s mitigated.

FPS drop is deeeefinitely something that’ll gently caress up people’s TTK.

Getting 5 pulse grenades on a single phase of Calus is never a waste.

The thing with Skullfort is you need to know which mobs fall under the 'one hit kill' category, and which don't, so you can properly chain-charge enemies. Psions and dogs in the Leviathan can be one-shot with the shoulder charge; Legionaires and Phalanxes, not to mention the gold health enemies, cannot. So if you're going to use it then you gotta plan just a bit. It's that great on baths since the psions don't come to your seal often and when they do it's hard to build up a charge. It can be worth using on Pleasure Gardens, and sometimes on Gauntlet, and DEFINITELY on Calus (The dogs that come out during the DPS phase can be an easy grenade farm while you switch platforms).

On the other hand War Rig doesn't require any planning so it's nice all around. With the pulse nerf Skullfort isn't quite the leader but it's still amazing, and probably still beats War Rig's DPS in many situations.

Mobs/players that are Shoulder Chargeable:

- Red Bars
- Shielded Red Bars with their shields down
- Enemy players with their shields down afaik even with 10 resilience

Shoulder Charge is also now AoE instead of a single target like it was in D1, so gently caress it dude let’s go bowling. My record simultaneous trash mob kills is like 6.

Ever jumped off of a high cliff into a mob and charged 'em, killing them and saving yourself from a drop that would surely have killed you?

Man, is that fun.

Yep. It and the Hunter dodge can be skillfully timed to mitigate fall damage. I mostly do this in PVE, as Crucible maps don’t currently have a ton of verticality.

khy posted:

You misunderstand what I was saying; With the Insurmountable Skullfort exotic, a shoulder charge kill would refill melee energy completely, and allow you to shoulder charge infinitely (And since charge grants grenade energy, you could spam a TON of grenades)..

I may have misunderstood, but are you sure they’re not Orange-Bar mobs, or whatever that weird color for the “tougher” intermediary non-Yellowbar mobs that is? Like Daemons in the Forest?
