Okay, now I really need to see the SciFi channel miniseries

I think they were influenced Jodorowsky's Dune, i hated the costume design in that show.

It was good for a tv adaption.

The scenes on Gedi Prime were filmed in infrared which i think looks totally different from black & white, wonder if anyone has used that before. :stare:

I think it was due to my expectations after DUNK and Messiah were so high so it was a letdown

I hated the fourth book first time around and it took me multiple years and re-reads to break through but I still think it's one of my favourites

First book is good by itself, first three are good together, first four are good together, the last two i also like though it feels like a new series rather than a continuation... that all stopped when Frank died.

There are no books after that. :colbert:

Not to start a failson discussion but I actually read all three house books and the Butlerian Jihad ones with the naivete of a reader who just wanted a bit more of Dune.

I was hoping for something like what Christopher Tolkien did with his fathers notes and concepts. House Atreides was an okay start but like crumbled really fast and when that scene in the invasion of Ginaz happened I literally threw the book across laughing

I have no excuses for reading ALL Butlerian Jihad books, they start bad and keep being bad CONSISTENTLY

I read those three, then threw the books into the bin, they made the Dune universe insignificant and bereft of wonder. :argh:

Here’s my unifying theory of all the Dune books (by Frank and his son alike):

Once you read Dune, you read Dune Messiah if you want to know what happened next to Paul.

Children of Dune and God Emperor, if you want to know what happened next to Dune.

Heretics and Chapterhouse, if you want to know what happened next to Frank Herbert.

That's a nice take on it.

If I recall correctly they're all 100% dependent on a single air-traffic controller that used to be a human woman. The guild is pretty lucky that a benevolent super-being with no value for incentives just keeps the whole operation afloat in her idle time.

so the way the baron broke yueh's unbreakable suk doctor conditioning is to.....kidnap his spouse and torture her?

like how is the conditioning even remotely perceived as unbreakable then? Those guys have being around for like 10k years wouldn't the first thing someone would have tried back in the days is to kidnap a family member or something to force the suk doctor to assassinate their patient?

Wanna was Bene Gesserit and Jessica was able to spot that in the book, if Wanna had done the Sisterhood conditioning on him it might have interfered with the Suk conditioning... like running multiple antivirus programs on a computer it might break things and given the Baron more leverage.

Everyone probably knows this, but the Toto soundtrack is available on iTunes. Mostly just music from the film, but with a couple of the best spoken word pieces. (E.g., the Baron's "The Duke will die before these eyes, and he'll know, he'll know...!")

I have the original vinyl LP of it in storage, even if i no longer have a record player.

If I remember the book correctly, people didn't use shields in the desert because it had the effect of making every sandworm within a couple dozen kilometers make an enraged beeline for it

That's used in Children Of Dune where Pauls guide activates a shield to draw a worm onto them (it's shown in the tv version).

Tree Bucket posted:

The flame around the emperor's orb ship during the dust storm might also help explain why shields aren't great in deserts. It looks like the shield is trying to block every wind blown dust particle

In the movie one of the Sardukar says the storm is causing shield issues and that they should return to space.
