Virtually nobody cares, and the market isn’t going to suddenly uptick for them in 20 years time. Unless that Disney buyout comes through and the Alien movies go into the Vault.

Five Cent Deposit posted:An uncompressed standard def transfer from film can fool many people into thinking they are watching an actual 35mm print if the projector and intermediate hardware are both top notch. I’ve done it - screened features that way, I mean - and had people ask me if they were watching film. Industry pros, even. My cinematography mentor has a great story about this. Back when the first restoration of "Night of the Hunter" back in the 90s happened, they showed it at the ASC Clubhouse with Stanley Cortez in attendance. By chance, he sat next to Stanley during the screening and afterwards, Stanley turned to him and said, "That's the best the film has ever looked." They were watching a standard definition restoration of "Night of the Hunter", which says a lot of the supposed resolution and color/tonal gamut of a film print. Don't care so much about Robocop since I already have the remastered MGM disc (but let's see what they end up doing). I'm interested in what they do with "Cruising", hell, maybe they somehow found the missing footage. Also, I would like to thank Arrow. I just got my December order from them today and they decided to gift me with 3 extra movies for free (probably to fill out the weight of the package). Still, thanks.

Man, all this talk reminds me of when a friend and I used to run a microcinema group at UC Davis in the mid-2000s where every Friday or Saturday night, we would break into one of the big lecture halls, usually Wellman or Olson Halls, and screen movies. A few of the films we screened were: Man Bites Dog Yi Yi The Pornographers The Day I Became a Woman Last House on the Left The Beyond Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control Those were the few I remembered off the top of my head. I really miss those days.

Iron Crowned posted:The thing is, Ghostbusters 1 was filmed with film stock from the early 80's, and with 4k or even regular blus, everything I've seen from that era looks pretty grimy at some points. It's weird to think that over the next few years film stock got a whole hell of a lot "cleaner" and lacks a certain feel that you get from the 80's. Ghostbusters was shot on Eastmancolor 5294, which was a notoriously lovely film stock. It was super grainy even if you processed it as normal without pushing and it had terrible blue/green separation so you couldn't use it for compositing work.

FilthyImp posted:Well that's interesting. Cost-cutting feature? I assume "lets use the stock that's shittiest for what we'll eventually need" was not in the original design It was the fastest film available up to that time, so it meant you didn't need to use as much light if you wanted to shoot scenes in low light and night urban exteriors, and Ghostbusters sure had a lot of those. EDIT: 5294 was also the film used to shoot Aliens, which James Cameron notoriously complained about when the Alien Anthology was about to be released. The film stock only lasted like 3 years and was replaced by the better 5295. Ghostbusters 2 was shot on 5295. VoodooXT fucked around with this message at 16:55 on Jun 17, 2019 |

Also, I went through the entire Angel Collection and man, was not expecting those movies to be as good as they are.
