I posted this newbie quickstart guide in the old thread, seems relevant here. Updated it for ViL.

Tl;dr Newbie Advice

1. Get all your guns of a matching energy type.

2. Fill your tactical console slots with consoles that buff that energy type.

3. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power configuration.

Congratulations you're now better than 75% of the players in this game.

What are my energy types and consoles?

Phasers - Orange - Phaser Relay

Disruptors - Green - Disruptor Induction Coil

Plasma - Teal - Plasma Infuser

Tetryon - Blue - Tetryon Pulse Generator

Polaron - Purple - Polaron Phase Modulator

Antiproton - Red - Antiproton Mag Regulator

Pick what you like best, but pick one and stick with it. Yes, there's a different effect on each type and yes there's tons of variants of every energy type, but as a new player forget all of that. Decide what color you want to shoot and leave it at that.

I'm a new 50, what should I do?

1. Spend your free ship token on whatever ship you think looks cool and/or fits your play style. We're going to judge you as goons, but if you think the deep space science vessel looks neat, go with it.
1a. If you insist... for Feds, take the Assault Cruiser (if you like cruisers) or Patrol Escort (if you like escorts). For Klingons, take the Vo'Quv Carrier (if you like cruisers) or the Hegh'ta Heavy Bird of Prey (if you like escorts). For Romulans, take the Ha'apax Advanced Warbird (if you like cruisers) or Ha'feh Assault Warbird (if you like escorts).

2. Buy a set of white or green weapons of your desired energy type off the exchange. Mods don't matter. Also check your goon fleet bank, we have loads of random poo poo in there.

3. Buy a set of white or green tactical consoles of your desired energy type. Check the goon bank again.

4. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power.

This will be cheap and get you a highly functional boat that will last you for the rest of the game.

There's blues and purples and rep sets and mk 14s and lockbox ships and all kinds of other nonsense, but as a new player, don't worry about this unless you really want to. This kit will last you through 90% of the game's content fine and you'll out-dps quite a lot of pubbies in much flashier ships.

At 61, you'll get another new ship token but your selection of ships is very limited:

Fed: Exploration Cruiser Retrofit, Tactical Escort Retrofit, Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit

KDF: B'Rel Bird of Prey Retrofit, Marauder Flight-Deck Cruiser, Kar'fi Battle Carrier

Rom: T'Varo Light Warbird Retrofit, Dhelan Warbird Retrofit, Mogai Heavy Warbird Retrofit, D'Deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser Retrofit

Dom: See the Fed or KDF list per your allegiance choice.

What should you buy? If you're happy with your existing ship, keep it and pick your new ship based on what you need for admiralty (probably the LRSVR, kar'fi, or t'varo). If you decided you don't like your existing ship, pick a new one based on what you think you'd prefer.

Help! I'm a new player with lots of zen and want to buy a new ship! I've already got the unlock essentials! What should I buy?

Excellent question, and to be fair, there's no particularly wrong answer. Anything tier 5 and above is perfectly serviceable. So, here's a few guidelines:

1. Z-Store Bundles are always a good deal if you're interested in buying each ship as it is. This is particularly true for universal ships and cross-faction bundles.

2. Fly what you think looks good. This is the number one rule of being a happy STO player. If you really insist you can try to maximize your performance, but that's on you.

3. Ships come with admiralty tokens, which can be very useful, especially for new players.
3a. Don't forget to take the admiralty reward from the Temporal story arc "Time and Tide." The USS Pastak is a terrific card.

Some suggested buys:

1. T6 Battlecruiser. Available as T6 Cross Faction Battlecruiser Bundle, Arbiter Class Battlecruiser (Fed), Kurak Battlecruiser (Klingon), and Morrigu Heavy Warbird (Romulan). If you have to have a z-store ship, this is probably the best choice. It's nimble, fighty, doesn't look terrible (and can be downright pleasant with judicious kitbashing), and comes with a terrific starship trait that's well worth the grind. If you're into playing alts in multiple factions, the bundle is one of the best value buys in the z-store.

2. Cardassian Intel Ship Bundle. This is a pack of four ships that can be used on any faction - two cruisers, an escort, and a science vessel. That's four admiralty tokens for every character you make, and a fine ship of each major archetype to get you started and see what you prefer. For 6k zen, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better bargain.

3. 31st Century Temporal Ship Bundle. As above, but three cross-faction ships rather than four.

4. Romulan Dreadnought - Scimitar Class. If you like the Romulans and want maybe the highest-parsing ship in the game right now, here you go. Don't be fooled by the Scimitar being "merely" tier 5, this thing is still a beast.

5. T6 Escort Carrier. Available as T6 Cross Faction Heavy Escort Carrier Bundle, Alita Class Heavy Escort Carrier (Fed), Qa'Tel Flight Deck Raptor (Klingon), and Jhu'ael Tactical Carrier Warbird. If you want to fly a carrier, especially as the Federation, this is your stop barring lockbox options. For Feds, this is your t6 Akira.

6. Excelsior Cruiser Retrofit. A long-standing favorite ship of many Star Trek fans, this is the endgame quality version. Won't impress, but won't disappoint. Federation only.

7. Reliant Class - Advanced Light Cruiser. Also available in the T6 Cross Faction Advanced Light Cruiser Bundle. Are you one of those people who wants to fly a Miranda class at endgame? Shine on you crazy diamond, and enjoy.

I think there's less of their own content that the agents of yesteryear stuff. You basically get one tutorial mission, then you go right into the new expansion missions which everyone gets. You should probably start one just to take advantage of the recruitment event, and then use it for admiralty. They're perfect admiralty/contra alts.

With the caveat that their value as admiralty alts depends purely on how much zen you've shelled out for ships and/or ec you're willing to spend on lockbox ships for them. I dislike my one as an admiralty alt because all those low-level ships you get leveling up an alt are actually pretty handy, and for my z-store record Romulans are far superior admiralty alts despite the much greater time investment.

Blast of Confetti posted:

Should I go Romulan or Federation? I read somewhere Romulans can join the Federation but don't get access to all the ships?

As of ViL, the only Federation ships Fedroms can't get are certain faction-specific lockbox ships because the lockbox morphs into a Federation, Klingon, or Romulan ship when opened.

Pure Federation upsides are having the gentlest learning curve in the game, your starting boffs have terrific traits, and you have more freedom than any other faction when it comes to trying different styles of ship while leveling.

Fedrom on the other hand gets you the unique warbird line of ships with access to all the Federation ships if you're willing to pay the dil for them (probably not a good idea, but you do you), access to New Romulus as a hub, and at endgame you have access to both the Romulan and Federation stock in the z-store, both to fly and for admiralty - no small benefit!

Klingons and Klankroms mainly offer the allure of marauding doff missions rather than the Federation's diplomacy. Marauding is very lucrative in terms of ec and indirectly in dil - you get lots of prisoners, and KDF and klankroms can turn in 10 prisoners at a time for 1k dil.

That boff layout is super ancient but the concepts are still the same. Chain two emergency powers and two attack patterns; add in appropriate weapon buffs and some heals.

Failing that, like if you're in a ship that doesn't support that layout, I'd say the fundamental goodies you should have are:

Tactical Team 1
Beam Fire At Will/Cannon Scatter Volley
Beam Overload/Beam Overload
Hazard Emitters
Science Team
Emergency Power to Weapons
Engineering Team

If you have a ltcom tac: Attack Pattern Omega 1.

The specific ranks of anything but Tactical Team on that list, I leave to personal taste. And yeah, some ships are stuck with only a lt tac seat so you'll have to compromise even on that basic list.

New ship acquisition trip report: the tactical variant of the allied pilot escort, in my case the lethean version, is a very solid escort. I've never flown a ship with pilot seating, so that was an interesting experience. Not to my taste, I prefer a slow cruiser, but you can goddamn tap dance with these fuckers and with five tac consoles, a comm tac/pilot seat, a ltcom tac seat, and a ltcom universal (I used it for science to throw a gravity well into the mix because why not when you're this maneuverable), it's a very solid ship. Does have some glitchy visual effects if you run beam arrays on it, though - understandably for a ship with five fore guns, I don't think Cryptic was expecting people to run arrays on these.

The lethean ships are also very unique looking, so there's that, too.

So the Romulan leveling appears to be broken right now. The mission Tradecraft is impossible to complete, and while I was able to do the next arc up through Temporal Ambassador, I can't start the temporal thing after that, either from the menu or from directly talking to the temporal guys.

New mission isn't bad as long as you don't mind 99% of it being HOLY poo poo THAT'S A LOT OF HURQ. Wraps up the launch plot of ViL and sets others into motion. And a lot of Klingon stuff that won't make sense unless you watched Discovery which the game is now acknowledging was a thing.

Playing as a Romulan main has felt weird throughout ViL so far, they're the only galactic power that's been almost completely absent from the story (because they were almost completely absent from DS9). D'Tan shows up once or twice when all the leaders do and that's it. Even the Cardassians and Ferengi have had a bigger story presence than the third playable faction.

I just got back into the game after a long rear end time. Shockingly still fun. I made a fresh Cardassian Engineer and am enjoying going through the leveling and all. I guess I should make my Jem'Hadar character a Tactical? I kinda want to do Science but it seems like that's the redheaded step child class by how people are talking.

Science is fine and dandy right now - as a captain, it provides a good mix of healing, dots, and crowd control on the ground, and in space offers two very solid dps abilities (subnucleonic beam, though, is mainly a PvP thing). Science-focused ships can do quite well these days, but they're more complex to set up and run than a traditional dps monster tac build and so not recommended for new players. Though they can do fine with a generic build if you like how they look.

I'd say my generic build that I slap onto my alts at 50 that works fine for most purposes is something like this, adjusting as necessary for whatever seats you may or may not have. These are all built from powers available at any boff trainer, there's a whole lot more powers you can get (and mk 3 versions of the comm powers) if you are so inclined, but this is my personal build on the cheap with a minimum of effort put into it.

Tactical

Beam Fire At Will 1
Beam Overload 2
Attack Pattern Omega 1 (if you don't have a comm tac)/Attack Pattern Beta 2 (if you do)
Attack Pattern Omega 2
Tactical Team 1 (for that extra ensign tac/uni a lot of ships have)

Engineering

Emergency Power to Weapons 1
Engineering Team 2
Directed Energy Modulation 1
Aceton Beam 2

Science

Hazard Emitters 1

My latest trip reports in cheap lockbox ships.

Tholian Orb Weaver: Often overlooked even when it was new (mainly because it was introduced alongside the Recluse and Tarantula), the orb weaver is actually a very good science vessel. The boff layout is perhaps the platonic ideal of an old-school science vessel that doesn't support advanced specializations: comm sci, ens sci, ltcom eng, ltcom uni (read: tac), ens tac. If you're new to the game and have taken a liking to science vessels, an orb weaver is an excellent and affordable choice.

Tholian Mesh Weaver: It's an escort with a ltcom sci seat, that's good. It's an escort with a ltcom tac seat on top of a comm tac seat, and then a lt eng seat. Not so good. It's not bad, but it fails to stand out from the escort crowd.

APU Cruiser: As a rule I disdain any ship that doesn't have a ltcom uni or tac seat, and the APU Cruiser does not. What it does have is eng, way too much eng. There just isn't any reason for a ship to have both a comm eng and a ltcom eng. It's not terrible if you like its rather unique appearance, but it's not good.

Nihydron Destroyer: I have no clue what on earth this thing wants to be. It half-heartedly tries to be an escort with a secondary focus on eng, but opts for a lt eng and ens eng seats, which are much less valuable than a single ltcom eng seat and rounds them out with a lt sci. It's an okay escort, but distinctly in the lower half of that crowded field.

Undine Nicor Bio-Warship: Now here's a good escort. Comm tac, ltcom sci, ltcom uni, lt eng, all good. Quick, punchy, good boff layout (great for its time). If you want an escort on a budget, the Nicor is a fine, if dated, choice.

And finished out the other cheap exchange lockbox poo poo.

Malon Battlecruiser: No. A ship with only two tac consoles has to do a lot to impress me, and the fartboat does not. Too much eng, two tac consoles, no ltcom tac or uni.

Hirogen Hunter Heavy Escort: If you're okay with missing a ltcom sci seat, the Hunter is okay - it's a tac major, eng minor boat. Okay escort.

Sphere Builder Arebhes Destroyer: Contrary to what you'd probably expect, no temporal seating here. An unremarkable escort.

Kazon Heavy Raider: It's another okay escort, lots of uni seats if that interests you.

Lukari N'Kaam Scout Ship: Science vessel with lots of uni seats, consoles and admiralty value correctly assume you're going to use those seats for tac. Not bad, but an orb weaver is better unless you just like flying a UFO around - I've kept this on my Jem'hadar for that reason.

Mirror Universe Heavy Cruiser Retrofit: Fed only, it's an assault cruiser that also packs a ltcom sci seat. Not terrible for an entry level t5 cruiser, certainly better than the freebie assault and star cruisers, but unless you're one of the goofballs who like how this thing looks, grab yourself a d'kora instead for a cheap t5 cruiser.

Mirror Universe Escort Retrofit: It's a patrol escort with a ltcom sci seat, and escorts like gravity wells, so this is actually a pretty decent t5 escort. I like it.

Mirror Universe Science Vessel Retrofit: Get an orb weaver or a n'kaam instead. It's not terrible, I guess, if you really like the nova.

Mirror Universe Ki'Tang Bird of Prey Retrofit: If you were going to get a hegh'ta, get one of these instead. Slightly less sci and hull, more tac. On a bop, that's a good trade.

Mirror Universe Somraw Raptor Retrofit: Go read the MU escort retrofit.

Mirror Universe Negh'Var Heavy Battle Cruiser: It's a negh'var with more science and less eng. Gets a ltcom sci seat out of the bargain, so it's a solid improvement over the basic model. Still not especially good (no ltcom tac), but not awful.

Mirror Universe Vor'cha Battle Cruiser: It's a negh'var that's more maneuverable and more fragile. Yawn.

Mirror Universe Vo'Quv Carrier: Trades the lt sci for a lt eng. Meh.

Mirror Universe Ha'nom Guardian Warbird: Less tac, more eng. Not good.

Mirror Universe Ha'feh Assault Warbird: Less sci, more eng. Who cares?

Mirror Universe Mogai Heavy Warbird Retrofit: Surprisingly good. Ltcom sci is great on an escort, much more so than ltcom eng. If you like warbirds and like escort style, this is a fine choice.

Mirror Universe Dhelan Warbird Retrofit: Less sci, more eng. Meh. Get the above escort warbird instead.

Mirror Universe T'varo Light Warbird Retrofit: No, and significantly worse than the regular t'varo retrofit. Trading a ltcom uni for a ltcom tac on a ship that already has a comm tac is never a good idea.

Mirror Universe Ha'apax Advanced Warbird: Loses the main universe's extra ens tac (a seat that's rarely a bad thing) in exchange for an ens sci. Bad trade on an already merely okay ship.

So that rounds out about everything you can obtain for under 10 million ec on the exchange. My overall thoughts if you're looking for a cheap t5 ship:

Somewhere in the distance, the one Klingon main sobs.

Klingons in STD aren't the Mongolian viking samurai we know and love (or hate) from existing Trek. STD Klingons are, according to one of the writers, a stand-in for ISIS: an isolationist society of warriors obsessed with purity, and in the course of the show merrily indulge in torture, cannibalism, and rape.

The Romulans are also whimpering. Not only were they completely absent from ViL's story, the Romulans flat out haven't appeared in STD yet. STD's had the Klingons and the Mirror Universe. That's it for bad guys.

It'd be awesome if they ever have an ENT-themed expansion that tried to fix everything they recognize as the show's shortcomings

They more or less already did, it was the temporal arc.

So the account-wide extra admiralty slot from Gamma Recruit appears to be bugged, I'm getting Odo's Flagship but the admiralty slot is still locked.

Odo's Flagship has been changed from tribble, incidentally. Instead of a sci card, it's now 69/40/26, 4x crit rate from eng.
