There's pretty much no benefit to going private in a public hospital. Hospital gets a bit more cash and you can choose your specialist but that's it. Private insurance is more about elective surgeries.

tbh you're better off paying what you would be paying in premiums into a bank account. I've worked out that in order to get a surgery I need on private, I'll have to pay for top tier insurance for a year to wait out the waiting period (about 4-5k) and then also be subject to a bunch of out of pocket expenses anyway or dig into my super to afford it.

Yeah this was my first time seeing a fee estimate from them. It’s seriously criminal how much the public sector forks out to their mates through this type of consultancy.

Translating the costs of an individual project you outsource, compared to the total cost to bring on a highly skilled person internally, and then you’d also retain that knowledge within the department/agency going forward too. It’s hosed.

yeah but something something bloated public service fat cats!

Also be careful engaging any consultants with projects that might span over the christmas holidays; all the seniors gently caress off and leave the grads/interns behind to cluelessly do the work.

I think it's kinda ridiculous that if you have a loan, which you've been paying the repayments on every month for years, that someone can tell you you can't afford it.

We tried to trade down to a cheaper property with the same lender we were with and got told we couldn't afford it.

To pay $200 a fortnight less than I was managing to pay, on my own, while my partner was waiting 6 weeks for her parental leave to come in.

Ended up going with a different lender, which cost me about 1% PA more, but it was still way cheaper, and we got a bigger block with a nicer house about 2KM up the road, and it's nice having that extra money for shopping every fortnight.

IMO If you own a home, your circumstances change and you need to shift for work, or more space, but want to pay about the same, you shouldn't have to pay stamp duty, you should be able to just transfer your mortgage, and you shouldn't have to go through 3-6 months of uncertainty. All of these requirements are dumb constructs of capitalism and need to gently caress off.

this is why land taxes are a popular policy recommendation (but state budgets are way too reliant on stamp duty for them to want to change that rn)

I did some sums the other day for renting versus buying using the ANZ home loan calculator.

I pay $1300pcm in rent for the house I'm living in at the moment which would probably easily sell for $450,000 at auction.

If I were to get a loan for that amount, the ANZ calculator gives me a monthly repayment of $2307 for a standard variable loan of $4.6% over 30 years.

That's a thousand dollars more than I'm currently paying in rent each month - and a total repayment over those 30 years of $830,520.
It would take me 53 years to pay that much at my current level of rent.

So, the way I figure it, by renting I'm debt free and ahead of the game for the next half a century

EDIT: A thousand dollars more a month to be able to hammer a nail into the walls

A mortgage for the apartment I live in would be less than the rent; the real problem is that I can't save for the $80k deposit, because a good 80% of my income goes to basic living expenses and the other 20% is poo poo like new clothes that I need for work, and leisure activities/buying video games once in a while.
