I'm glad later games made certain Pokemon lose their annoying gimmicks so they weren't gimped playability-wise for X levels.

Like, Feebas is a rare equivalent of Magikarp and does the same Splash nonsense, but at least you can teach it moves like Ice Beam. It's not going to hit hard, but it's still something more than flopping around uselessly for several levels!

Don't worry! Even though Bill wasn't wearing a fursuit, I'm sure the game will try its best to find more ways to scar your trainer for life. :)

Basically, while some Pokemon can learn moves on level-up, others might not have access to it normally and could benefit from it, whether for bolstering their own movepools or chain breeding a skill to another Pokemon. :eng101:

You're right that Dig is not that great, though, beyond its overworld effect.

And Swift is one of those attacks with speed modifiers, so unless you're using something like Quick Attack with a faster Pokemon, Swift will pretty much always go first. I believe it never misses, either.

Trainers are better sources of EXP than wild Pokemon, as a note.

And yeah, Defense Curl is pretty lame. Its only real value is if your Pokemon is low-level but also happens to know Rollout. Then you can do a combo of Defense Curl + Rollout which boosts the latter's damage.

I kinda disliked how the original season of the anime typically distilled the Gym Leaders down to using only one Pokemon. Brock doesn't even use Geodude the first time he battles Ash and it's basically brushed off in the second match anyway. Ironically, the opposite is true for Misty's Starmie, which is a wimp compared to her Staryu.

The battle with Surge was pretty great, though. And apparently he has a foul mouth in Japanese, shouting out things like "Goddamn!" when he's losing. In the Pokemon Adventures manga, he's even more over the top and has a bazooka that launches Voltorbs, if I remember correctly.

He's certainly one of the more entertaining Gym Leaders, that's for sure. And he uses Raichu, so I can appreciate his good taste.

I don't remember if it was mentioned, but the P.I. trainers (or were they Gamers in this game) were originally Gamblers.

But the moral guardians complained, so all instances of gambling in the series were slowly phased out. Which makes some of the Trainer Classes make less sense, because Gamblers, as their name suggest, gamble in battle by using OHKO moves that have low accuracy.

Edit:

Ah, I see the anime writing staff cameos in this game.

I like the notion that the Pokedex is a combination of fact and folklore, with new data able to be input at any time while old data is subject to revisions and further study by the regional professor.

After all, I doubt catching a Pokemon immediately gives you literally every bit of information about it, otherwise things like the Steel type only being discovered in Gen II or the Fairy type in Gen VI make no sense.
