Thanks for posting this, it was a really interesting watch, and it reminded me how I really just despise Anthy. Even at the end I have to question the story's assertions on whether she breaks free with Utena at all. Except in the movie version, where things are framed I guess more clearly for me. Perhaps I need to rewatch the tv series and it's just been too long and I've forgotten important points, but I definitely remember the feeling of "Utena wins, and somehow Anthy gets to share in that Victory even though she's basically following the system the entire time and just does/feels whatever the winner of the duels desires."

I cut a much larger post down to be the least spoilery as possible, but if it's still too much talking about the end of the story I'll withdraw the discussion until later on.

Also, the manga is not necessarily the "original," since it and the anime were being developed concurrently. Perhaps it's better to think of them as... fraternal twins?

FAKE EDIT: Turns out I was wrong, I had thought that the manga ended up lagging behind the series, but looking up the dates it did release first. I knew they were developed together, but I guess I just got confused due to how hard it was to get reliable information and imports back in the days of dodgy copied VHS tapes.

I knew the game existed, but never got to play it. One part because I didn't even know anyone with a Saturn but also because of the games I did import one with such a heavy language requirement was pretty much a no-go in that era. I was fascinated by the screenshots I saw of it though and I'm super excited to see this play though because of it. The production value seems really high and I'm really interested in seeing where the story goes, especially since it's supposed to be plausible as occurring canonically within the anime timeline and that really piques my interest.

Utena just did it in a way that indicates that the show's not only bold and willing to take issue with what came before, but genuinely charming and lovable in a way that, say, Evangelion isn't.

Evangelion I find really interesting because I get such a different read from the series now than I did back in the 90s. Finding out more about Anno and his past and realizing that Evangelion is basically just Anno doing Ultraman again, but putting a spin on it that basically defined what mecha anime was from then on.

It helps that the guy behind this project, Kunihiko Ikuhara, was the director of three out of the five seasons of Sailor Moon. He knew shoujo anime better than anyone.

Sailor Moon is also kind of amazing because it did the same thing. Combining sensibilities that were popular in tokusatsu shows (Specifically sentai) and applying them to the magical girl genre and basically defining the standard for that genre of anime moving forward.

Patter Song posted:

The game's not only 100% plausible with the plot (assuming you don't get a certain one of the nonstandard game overs), but it provides context/background/foreshadowing for the events of the second and third seasons while being set midway through season 1. The only problem with that is, as a visual novel, on one playthrough, you will only see a fraction of that, and if we really gently caress up, we won't get to see some of the coolest plot elements that tie it into the story. Of course, that's the risk you take with all VNs.

Are you planning any sort of post-game content with talking about different routes? Or how the system works in general, though maybe you can talk a bit about that now? It seems like so far it's fairly straightforward with maybe earning points that determine what events you get later on, but is there any sort of point where you get stuck on a given route early on and then manage the quality of your ending, or is it mostly a straight story with only certain details changed based on how many points you've gained with the different members of the cast? Or is it more CYOA style with branching paths that can take you in almost wildly different directions?

Gundam is really interesting and important too in the same way that Evangelion is. And really, I should just say that Tomino's influence on what mecha anime became is just as important as Anno's, as both of them made works that helped shape the genre what it is today. The only real case I can make for Tomino being more important is that he was a decade earlier, but really the landscape would be completely different without both of them. I'm curious why you bring up Zeta in specific because I feel like the important stuff Gundam brought to the table was pretty much all present in the original series.

In any case, I don't see how mentioning Eva's importance lessens MSG's. They're both hugely influential works who left indelible marks on the genre.

Only thing I'm beginning to regret about the style of the thread is that the emphasis on voting detracts from discussion of the game's story. Anyone have anything to say about our encounter with ??? or the challenge to Utena? After all, I remember people here asking how the dueling and such would get involved into the game's plot.

I find that a lot of LPs that I've read with audience participation on important choices at least the majority of posts are just voting.

As for the story, it's kind of at an odd point right now. We know ??? exists and I feel like it's reasonable to assume that they're the one who is issuing the challenge to Utena given the threat that she won't be engaged to the Rose Bride much longer. I guess it's also possible that ??? is issuing the challenge and is manipulating things to the we (Patter Song) are going to be the one to duel? We haven't exactly been set up as a fantastic swordswoman, but then neither was Utena when she defeated the Captain of the Kendo team.

I'm pretty baffled at what ???s goal is or who they are. Even though due to height ??? seems like they should be older, we mistake them for being a member of the student council, so my best guess would be maybe a half-sibling on our father's side who dislikes us because he left their mother to have a child with and marry our mother?

Also what kind of confuses me is:

??? posted:

...You will disappear.

The way it's written in english seems to mean that we're going to disappear, but the structure of the conversation makes it feel like it might be aimed at Utena instead?

All in all, I'm just confused and excited to see where this all goes. My best guess is ??? wants the power to revolutionize the world as inherited revenge for their discarded parent.

There's not really a lot to go off of right now. She has presumably some connection with our father, who she doesn't like, she doesn't dress like a student and is the president of the fencing club-- but she also just transferred to our class? Which seems odd, I guess she could be transfering from a different class at the school, but I feel like that never happens in media and I didn't go to school in Japan so-- is that even a thing? Maybe?

I guess what I'm saying though is that there's not really any information here other than that she sticks out, I don't really care for her character design (white hair is a big no for me and I hate how prevalent it is in a lot of stuff these days) mostly because her outfit doesn't look like any sort of uniform and the way the characters outfits look is really important in the series. But design aside, it's hard to form an opinion one way or another until we learn something. I feel like whether or not she's teasing us by giving us a wrong answer or not and how she reacts when we do or do not go with her suggestion is going to inform us more on her personality and how she feels towards us.

Wholeheartedly agreed. I definitely know my own views reflect my own biases, and that someone else could have an equally valid view that is incompatible with mine. For me, I interpret her as a character who uses a variety of roles and personas to cover how depressed, empty, suicidal, and hopeless she feels, and I know I'm basing that quite strongly on a few specific comments she makes (like about trying to be a doll because dolls are things without feelings) that someone else might weigh more or less heavily. I don't think she thinks what Akio is doing is right, but I don't think she can bring herself to make herself vulnerable by expressing true sincerity to someone, and frankly I think she's so tired she doesn't much care about other people, because caring is another form of vulnerability. In that lens, the only time you really see 'raw' Anthy is when she's in the coffin and reaching out desperately for Utena... even the ending, which involves her taking literal steps forward, has her be composed and cool.

I do feel that you are letting Anthy off too easy, though maybe that's not the appropriate way to put it. I do feel that while Akio is the cause of why Anthy is as bad as she is, but I don't have a good answer for "if someone else is the cause of someone being terrible, at what point can you blame the victim when they end up terrible as well?" In my position I think it's terrible what happened to her, and the decisions she makes is regrettable, but I don't think Anthy ever really shows any indication of wanting to change herself. I know I stated my opinions earlier in the thread about not liking Anthy and a lot of that is due to because she takes no actions to work towards her own freedom, but I do see where you're coming from and why you view her in that way.

I think part of the problem is that Utena's male character designs are...not particularly attractive (Akio possibly excepted). Touga is clearly supposed to be the eye candy of the show but even he is strangely...angular. Also, they're all colossal douchebags excepting Miki, and Miki is dull and uninteresting.

Attractiveness being highly subjective, I do agree that Touga is probably drawn the least physically attractive of the main three guys, (oh wait, Miki is a guy too. Right.) but that he's got a fairly attractive personality compared to the other two. If Saionji's introduction wasn't so overwhelmingly negative perhaps things would be different, but I definitely agree with PetraCore that he and Touga are a great pair for each other.

It was an innocent time before game developers had truly began to hammer the profitability of anime tiddy.

I was looking for a different post in this thread wanting to discuss the flip between "I'll just choose Juri options" and "Don't feel the need to always vote for Juri" and came upon this one and felt it needed some comment as video game history is really more interesting to me.

Game developers in Japan have always been about anime tiddy. The PC gaming market for a long time was basically just tiddy games and RPGs-- and tiddy game RPGs, and even just in the VN/Dating Sim sphere the PC versions would have explicit CGs while later console releases would have these stripped out. PC gaming as a force in the west has had an uphill battle in Japan because by an large the PC gaming has long been seen a vehicle for porn games. By the time of the Saturn and the game this thread is about this was all old-hat even, as you can find Strip Mahjong or Sexy Horse Derby games on the Famicom and even Arcade games were never immune to having adult-oriented content as well.

This isn't a condemnation or some sort of 'those wacky Japanese,' it's just that historically there was no innocent time. Anime tiddy was always there and it was always where the profit was.

One of the reasons I wanted you to talk a bit more about how the internal system works in the game is because dating sims, otome or otherwise, tend to work in a couple specific ways and working out which way the game works is helpful for understanding the game itself. My own view is sort of skewed as on the trashier end of gameplay I've mostly only played otome ones, but I feel like in general you can sort dating sims into three general categories:

Ones where you sort of pick your interest at the start of the game, and then during choice options you try and pick the right ones to get you the best ending with the interest of your choice.

Ones that are VN/CYOA style where choice options will give you points towards a certain interest and your ending is usually decided by whoever you have the most points for. Or you pick from all the options available and you get the ending based on just your points with that person.

Ones where you set a daily schedule or pick an option and earn points based not only on how you answer choice options, but also on encountering the various interests based on the schedule/location choices.

I'm certainly not an expert on these types of games, though, and I can think of a couple of cases that work sooort of differently not clearly defined here, but in my experience this is a good guide to sort of lay things out, again, otome or otherwise. So far it seems like we're working off some version of the VN/CYOA style I mentioned, as there have been some choices of where to go/what to do, but it doesn't seem like we're getting those choices in a consistent manner. By now also there's obviously a point system that we're managing and this game does seem nice enough to not only give us what seems like a fairly nice discreet numerical value in the percentages, but also a visual indicator when we gain/lose points. I'm not sure if we only get those indicators when we gain/lose certain amounts or if it's when we reach certain thresholds on the percent value.

As for differences between games' target audiences, I don't think otome games on a whole are that different structurally from other dating sims. Except in the case where in general a male MC is usually more allowed to drive the plot than a female one, but that's just characterization in media in general between the sexes and not really unique to dating sim games.

I am curious if she'll talk at all about her illness. For the most part, Chigusa seems like the type of character who will talk at length about one thing to hide that she doesn't want to talk about something else, and I'm not quite sure if she does talk about it, it will even be the truth. Still, better to ask then to be left wondering.

After that though, I also feel like Chigusa is probably dangerous to stay around for too long, so we should probably part ways before giving her a chance to come up with a plot to destroy us ahead of schedule.
