hambeet posted:I feel there is a greater semblance of awareness here as to what does and does not win elections in Australia. Maybe at a federal level, but the Vic Libs don't really have a clue about anything. If they did, they wouldn't have had a one-term government last time, and wouldn't have put Matthew "lobster with a mobster, openly corrupt, sell off all the land in Victoria" Guy as Party leader. Edit: froglet posted:Genuinely curious how high petrol prices have to be for people to drive less, if not stop entirely. It's not just about petrol prices, people also have to have alternatives. Sure, probably most people drive out of laziness/inertia, but for some it's literally their only reliable and available method of transport. Those people are just gonna get hosed over hard by rising prices, with no real alternatives but to take it.

Aesculus posted:It's kind of lovely and racist for a country to be run entirely by white people who haven't experienced a shred of discrimination or tried to understand minority issues at all in their lives. I don't think anyone is arguing that greater racial representation in Parliament is bad, just that "I'm X race, you're X race, therefore you should vote for me" is lovely reasoning. If a white candidate ran against a non-white candidate and said "vote for me because I'm white", the thread would (rightfully) be up in arms.

hooman posted:Think about what the difference is to say to a population who is underrepresented in Parliament "I am like you, vote for me to give you representation" compared to saying to a population who is over represented "I am like you, vote for me to maintain our hegemony of exclusion". Come on Whitlam. You're right that it's a somewhat disingenuous analogy so I'll withdraw it, but there's still an underlying principle that voting for someone solely on the basis of X characteristic is dumb. I wouldn't vote for a poo poo female candidate on the basis of I'm a woman and I think we need more in Parliament. If your primary (or only) reason for voting for someone is some characteristic that's out of their control and isn't policy-related, fine, vote how you want, but good luck convincing others that they're anything more than a token.

Standardised testing can sometimes be inherently useless depending on the test and how it's written. In the '90s my mum was sent to investigate this school in a remote indigenous community in WA ("charter plane only because there are no commercial flights here" level remote). The test they were given had the kids shown a picture, and they then had to describe what was happening in it. Simple enough, right? Except the picture was a very traditionally Anglo kitchen with a fridge, gramophone, a sink, and Pekinese. These kids were overwhelmingly living in one or two room shacks, and most had never even seen half the stuff in the picture before, let alone be able to talk about it and what it does.

Count Chocula posted:What alternatives do they offer? They torture refugees. They take money from the gambling lobby. They continue the drug war. It’s the same reason Hillary lost - the centre left party didn’t offer a real alternative. You are not as informed about Australian politics as you think you are if you can make this statement with a straight face. Do Labor do lovely things? Sure. Does that therefore make them exactly the same as the Libs? Not even close. I'm not particularly interested in having the debate in full but Hillary lost for many reasons, not just the Dems not being left enough.

Chicken Parmigiana posted:I mean, why not give it a shot? Minor effort post incoming. I'm purely responding to the question, not saying my opinion or whether I agree or not. My bet would be because (my understanding is) it's a very winnable spot, and they'd rather not take the chance of loving up what should be an easy goal. The "sympathetic to shoplifters" demographic isn't a huge one, especially in an election where crime is an issue for a lot of people. I honestly don't see any situation in which this wins her more votes than it loses, so why not sever? Candidates have fallen on less. Joking and irony posting aside, rightly or wrongly, most neutral audiences are actually not down with voting for someone who is actively bragging and joking about theft and drug use on social media, even if it's from years ago, even if it's against a mega corp who won't feel the effects of it. If nothing else, best case scenario is it shows exceedingly poor judgement. If I'm an undecided/unaligned voter, why am I going to take a chance and vote on someone who seems, at best, a bit of a nuffy? Nobody who wasn't already predisposed to voting for the Greens is going to read that and go "well I was on the fence about voting for her, but a home delivery service for nangs? Sign me the gently caress up!"
