Making A Murderer season 2 is worthwhile -- I had doubts there was much track left after season 1 (I liked it but basically thought "well that Brendan coerced confession is unconscionable, the prosecution version of events is bogus, and they clearly planted evidence, but would love an alternate theory re: Avery's involvement / what actually happened" and season 2, well, it improved the case on all fronts even if... well I won't spoil it beyond America Is Bad)

Not positive about this, but my sense is that it's in part because back then there was about 70% of the nerd demand that there is today, and about 1% of the big budget / polished nerd media supply that there is today.

Imagine liking hip hop and criticizing nu metal for misogynistic lyrics. And saying it valorizes aggression is some Marilyn Manson did Columbine FOX news poo poo. Working class kids were already angry because the world is ridiculously lovely and all signs pointed towards it getting even shittier. The generation coming up at the time were hopeless, cynical, and alone. Nu metal touched on that frustration in such a way that it brought all those kids together and showed them that they weren't alone, and allowed them all to vent together. It was therapy. Also the clown guy was hitting a keg with a baseball bat and the german guy had all set himself on fire.
put that over some "slappin" riffs and I think you've got a 1999 hit.

Well to be clear it's less a ringing endorsement of the current state of things and more just how universally one-sided things were until the ground started shifting (guessing) 15 years ago. Now in the US I would say Israel-Palestine coverage is probably on average just 25% stupider than other international coverage, i.e. almost unbelievably stupid.

part of my dream job is going to be gently convincing scientists that animals aren't just automated bits of code that only spawn in the presence of humans and otherwise don't exist, much less think and act independently. it's one thing to know the biological functions of an animal inside-out, but stemfolk really struggle to empathise enough to see things from the perspective of an actual tortoise/eagle/kangaroo, which is what you must do when you're trying to design conservation works
I don't know much about conservation/ecology research, but research psychologists who do animal work generally are rewarded for showing things animals CAN do. They're also almost all "animal people", with the good and the bad that implies... even the first strong critic of animal languages, Herb Terrace, started off his career dreaming he could teach chimps to pass more symbolic language on through generations, farm, develop culture beyond potato-washing etc.

They do of course get analytical-at-the-risk-of-reductive, but that's less a moral choice and more because it's research and they want to be rigorous.
