Also don't disable all the DLC; one of them gives you the robots. ...Totally not saying that because I submitted one. The instability would probably show when you start encountering the DLC content; that being said, it might not cause any issues at all. Looks like you'll just have to play and see. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 15:24 on Jan 8, 2019 |

Nah, WotC just nerfs them to less annoying levels and has different rules for encountering them.

Y'know, the Cthulhu mention reminded me - anyone else was disappointed that they didn't go with rebooting Terror from the Deep in this game? Seemed such a natural progression after the first UFO - > XCOM.

Doing the blacksite mission will push the Avatar project back slightly, IIRC. On the other hand, it's a slightly bigger mission and now that Mutons have started showing up you might really need some upgraded guns...

I'll just note that facing (and overcoming) unfair enemy has been a part of the series ever since the OG X-COM games; it's a game mechanic connected to the narrative of facing seemingly insurmountable odds. And yeah, Codices are dicks and probably my least favorite enemy in the game. But there are ways of fighting them and it mostly comes down to prioritizing the bastards whenever they show up. You'll eventually be able to one-shot them too. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 10:46 on Feb 16, 2019 |

The main advantage of upgrading versus building more power plants is that it saves space (which actually is limited as you will unlock more facilities) and time you would have to spend excavating. And yeah, there is a difference between "suboptimal" and "trap". Thing about XCOM is that it gives you enough tools to drag yourself out of most pits you end up in, but a lot of it is not obvious on a first playthrough (and if it is any consolation, 2 is a huge improvement over the first XCOM in this regard). It is much harder to get screwed completely this time around. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 16:24 on Feb 19, 2019 |

Qrr posted:All of the Alien Ruler flavor comments are really odd if you didn't do the DLC mission, and I'm confused about why they disable the DLC story missions by default in the expansion. FWIW, for Nat and Tea, this can probably be spoiled as it only pertains to XCOM1 story: Doctor Vahlen was XCOM1's Tygan. Much higher on the Mad Scientist scale. She really - and I mean really - enjoyed dissecting aliens, which could explain the experiments that led to the creation of... whatever it is you're facing. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 11:17 on Mar 2, 2019 |

I mean yeah, sure, they are weaker but it's loving murderbots. And it's not like they're as much of a downgrade from soldiers as the SHIVs were in XCOM 1.

To be honest, I just really wanted to come up with a blackened-out block of text where only the words for robots, "vanilla" and "loving" would be visible for the LPers to project meaning into.

It should also be noted we haven't seen the full extent of alien ruler dickery yet; they've managed to scare it off really fast. Plus it's nowhere near the worst one; Archon King and his instahit missile barrage can go gently caress straight off.

|
# ¿ Mar 6, 2019 10:04 |
And then it moves straight to "what is the point of having ranged weapons on Rangers" and the irony becomes overwhelming. That being said, I think you will find out the answer to that question within a couple missions at most.

Yeah, it's what I was trying to allude to with the whole Silent Killer story: in XCOM, it really pays to explore your options. Some of the most humble looking items have amazing potential when used right.

Bruceski posted:I suspect that "this is challenging, particularly right off the bat" combined with their struggles in the early game to turn it into some scary monster. Also I find I always put off missions like that because there's always something else to do. "Oh, people need to heal so I'll wait for that." "Okay, I'll do it after XYZ finishes researching." "Got a terror mission, people need to heal so I can bring my A-team..." This one I typically do once I get the magnetic weapons so I have no idea how badly it scales if left alone - do the enemies get tougher? That being said, they've got colonels now, it should be fine as long as they bring maketheboxlonger Emi.

Research the plot. It's kinda silly if you run into Gatekeepers before the actual - wonderfully creepy - Gate mission; this has happened in my last WotC playthrough and it really ruins the effect.

Archon King is a game ender if they trigger it late in the turn... Or don't have the frost grenades... Or some other pretty big ifs. Apart from that, I figure they've got it in the bag - the solo Avatar is entirely comical and the final fight can kill a soldier or two but I've never seen a teamwipe.

Dead Reckoning posted:It's not really "crippling yourself" when the difficulty of vanilla XCOM 2 was fine and Alien Hunters is the worst non-comsmetic DLC. The reason I tuned in for this was to see how they would adapt their tactics to the new and weird enemies the game throws at you, but if the single tactic is going to be "freeze everything new & threatening, kick it while it's down, repeat until completing weapon upgrades that trivialize the encounters", that isn't going to be very interesting. But everybody's got their own style and given how rocky the start was you can definitely see their reasons for using it.
