Yeah if you're relying on your backup kicker who isn't even really your backup kicker to make a last-ditch kick that rarely succeeds in the best of cases, then your game is probably already lost

Actually pulling off the onside kick would've been a pretty tall task, but I guess it just seems like it shouldn't be that hard to not kick the ball 30 yards. Put the ball on a tee and put me in there, and I guarantee I will not put it 30 yards through the air.

Yeah there was zero chance that was going to work. The game was over as soon as Dak converted that 3rd and 15.

you could sit someone down, explain them your strategy (kick it right at someone? kick the top of the ball? etc), have them run a few practice kicks into the net, and then run them out there and probably get a better shot at converting it than what that guy did. getting the onside kick back is luck but if you're going to do a bad attempt then your shot is worse than luck. same thing with the 2pt conversion instead of kicking the fg. nobody else on that team has ever kicked an XP? or a soccer ball?

Yeah IIRC there was a recent rule change and the stats on successful onsides are deceptive because that includes surprise onsides, I'm pretty sure the success rate on expected onsides is probably like once per season if it's even that high.

It shouldn't have come down to that, the 3rd and 15 conversion was basically the epitome of everything bad about the defense this season

e: I literally think I've seen the "pop it over the first line's heads but ahead of the others, let it bounce" kick work once in a college game and that's it. And on top of that Sea Bass has only had one successful onside in his entire career so it was probably a wrap even if he hadn't been hurt. The circumstances that got him hurt are all on Schottenheimer though, he can get hosed.

No because that's what the kicker is for. Maybe they shouldn't have had some fatass old guy as their specialist.

Being in play for the one seed so late in the season might be the worst thing for the Texans. It's kinda rare to see a coach beg to be fired as much as O'Brien does and then luck into an extension.

Norv was a highly successful coach for the Chargers who you hated because he's not Marty

Find a single person on here who'll stan for BOB and isn't a Titans or Colts or Jags fan

e: And the whole argument is ridiculous anyway. "lol say that after BOB coaches your team to a playoff win" is meaningless when I want him gone because he can't coach them to their full potential, ie playoff wins (except against Connor Cook I guess)

I'm just happy the Hawks made the playoffs and had a classic close loss to end the season. As always, need to pick up another reliable o-lineman, some help on the defense, and some wide receivers, and, hell, we'll be back next year. Hopefully. With Wilson, a playoff spot is always possible.

I was actually a lot madder about the first three three and outs. Like our very first drive, Carson had back-to-back 4 yard runs to set up 3rd and 2, and then we decided on a lovely pass play?

He really has always been poo poo at onside kicks, though. Successful onside kicks require a lot to go right at once, but that starts with the kicker making recovery difficult for the other team, and it never really was Seabass’s kicks. Maybe he’d try that thing where the ball is supposed to jump awkwardly at the last minute, except instead it would just dribble slowly at an opponent and maybe peter out before it went ten yards.
