Doesnt do well with sand either. Or swamp for that matter.

The m16 is a very finicky rifle that you have to constantly have clean and lubed or else it'll start jamming everywhere.

I was in the DoD up until recently (promoted into another agency) and when I came in as a civilian we were working off a trailer because they were renovating the building we were supposed to work out of. The turn over was delayed for like 2-3 years, and the contractor kept cutting corners that did not pass muster. Eventually they fixed it up as much as they could and the corp of engineers relented (with the contractor being blacklisted). I spent little over a year in building before I left and it suffered from tons of HVAC issues with our server room sometimes suffering from tons of humidity (at best) to potentially catastrophic heat sometimes.

Now when I was still in the military they renovated the USARC I was in too, but that time it was mostly done in time. Well the HVAC also crapped out with one entire wing of the building not having AC most of the time, and the offices not having any windows you could open up. Then Maria hit and for some god forsaken reason they had the top floors with some weird transparent plastic light catchers in the ceiling that got blown off and flooded the top floors of the building.

DoD infrastructure is probably the biggest scam after weapons procurement.

and I'm sure that there are some generals in the components that share that sentiment with dread.

It's the exact same problem with every branch in every western military

Militaries constantly contracting out work always feels like bullshit to me. Contractors get paid more than soldiers and theres more inherent waste by having the chain skim money at every link in the chain. Its just an accounting thing to make "government smaller" by having a bigger pool to the side to make some people richer and just not call that pool part of government.

I dont know why you'd need military coders/ data engineers / scientist or whatever in uniform. These are garrison jobs, you can fill them with DoD civilians and they wont have to meet any of the military physical standards.

Yes, some IT positions will be required in the field for maintainer/operators of information systems. And those are already fielded and I dont think they are having any particular retention issues than the other branches arent also going through right now.

Was gonna post this just now. Some idiot would argue that congress forcing the navy to keep certain ships on the roll when they are requesting early decomisioning means the ships would be usable. No, the reality is that they would just rust at drydock or end up getting its parts "controlled substituted" to make another of the same class barely functional

Did they tell the readers that the chinese navy is basically built to hard counter carrier battle groups?

It's not supposed to survive the war, dummy, neither are ours. Missile subs are as good as dead the minute they launch, the point is just to survive long enough to press the button that vaporizes every major naval base in Japan. How do you get to be "a former U.S. government weapons expert" and not know that? Yes I know it's just the propaganda line but come on

And lots of assumptions they didnt you know, change the propulsion system to something thats more modern and quiet. Downplaying adversaries constantly is how you get china popping a sub a few miles from a US naval battle group without anyone noticing and whoops china has like 50x time naval production we do
