This show is great because it’s mostly comedy but they have gotten pretty hardcore radicalized over the years and when they let it slip it’s pretty great.

Honestly I would argue that they were radicalized back when the show started in 2006(!), but it wasn't really apparent until such radicalization became more mainstream. The podcast as a whole has aged tremendously well, if you want to get into the show there's a case to be made for just starting at episode 1 and going forward (if you can find those earliest eps).

I know nobody else here listens to 5-4 but today's episode about Morse v Frederick is taking me back in a big way. Less so in regards to the actual case and more so about that early 00s moral panic backdrop. And that same Olympic torch relay went past my middle school at one point! Simpler times.

Our friend Patrick Wyman is back! And this week, after a brief jaunt down start up lane, we discuss the rapid radicalisation of the Anglo-American upper-middle class liberal, as they all seem to have gotten too much news recently. We've talked for ages in the past about your aggro conservative uncle, now it's time for the history, sociology, and economy of your aggro centrist uncle!

Patrick Wyman is cool so I will listen to this.

This Abe Lincoln quote about shepherds and wolves on today's 5-4 is real good and I'm surprised that I haven't heard it before.

"The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, an act for which the sheep hails the shepherd as a liberator, but the wolf denounces him as a destroyer of liberty"

Tides is back on track after a few unfortunate weeks with Mike Duncan/book related content. Wyman's said on Twitter that after he gets to the Bronze Age collapse in about five months' time he'll go on to the rise of China and Rome along while touching on a bunch of other ancient civilizations, it's turning into a world history. Pretty sick.

I don't mind the interview/book promo stuff too much. Doing a season on early Rome and China sounds dope but I've always liked his current events analysis the most. Lots of people ask what the point of studying history is and Wyman's strength as a history podcaster I think is identifying the trends that run through past events and pointing out how they inform our present day.

Also he is v funny IMO, at least when he's not reading off of a script. His story on the Defector podcast about Lane Kiffin bumming a smoke off of him in grad school had me rolling.

Guest episode on 5-4 this week, a mashup of The Politics of Everything and Know Your Enemy about the New Right movement. Kinda weird, and a little disconcerting, that all of these dudes are yearning for an era that they have no memory of, and that their parents probably have very little memory of. But also I have a cousin who would definitely be on "The New Right" if he had a Twitter account.

Yeah...strong echoes of the libs who (allegedly?) put their thumb on the GOP primary scale in 2016 because they thought Trump would be a lay-up in the general election. And this after Hayes made a point earlier in the episode that if you win a presidential primary you're going into the general with at least 40-42% of the national vote. For a GOP candidate that's not a very long walk to having enough votes to win!

Whatever, it was a nice change of pace from the usual Volts episode which is interesting but kind of egghead-y.

Enjoyed the latest Tech Won't Save Us ep but also laughed every time they took a beat to talk about what shows they liked and disliked, lol. Just goes to show how deep streaming culture is rooted in all of our heads! Gita's point about Disney (specifically Marvel I think they said) only putting out content to hype up the next piece of content is dead on though, and reminds me of a complaint I saw elsewhere on the forums that Disney has gone from being a company that makes entertainment to one that makes content. Gotta keep people engaged first and foremost, though they aren't the only ones guilty of it.
