Same with Hong Kong. No doubt there are right wing elements among the protestors, but that's not enough to take the side of the cops on this one. Who have undoubtedly beaten more heads in than anyone in Hong Kong who pays attention to Little Marco Rubio, lmao

When city people start thinking of themselves as a national polity separate from the country they're actually a part of, then that's an incredibly toxic mix. The turnout has also rapidly declined since the extradition treaty was taken off the table, which means the character of the protesters has already been boiled down to its most reactionary elements.

That's ignoring that Hong Kong has a completely separate political system from the PRC. Right now they can vote and they have legal recourse. In 28 years all of that goes away and they are integrated with a country that has political prisoners and concentration camps. No wonder they're nervous and angry and thinking about independence. I don't buy that this is a US op, either. Yeah there's a trade war but the PRC is still good for business.

Is there a RWN episode (or any podcast for that matter) about international sanctions? What their purpose is, what they actually do, and if they work (I'm guessing they don't). Every week it seems the US puts new sanctions on Iran, but I don't understand how they can keep coming up with more things to sanction. Seems like one of those lovely things the US does that there's a lot more to say about that the press never explores.

So his position that this is all bullshit snd the country should open up doesn’t give me a lot of hope. Is COVID really not nearly as bad as we thought? I was also expecting millions of deaths, but Nick is planting the seeds that instead of feeling relieved that the actions we took worked, we should be pissed that we were mislead into taking those actions in the first place.

Is there a published takedown of Brown Moses/Bellingcat somewhere or is it just tweets? Despite him being a goon, it's unclear to me what exactly he does for these shadowy organizations

Ramrod Hotshot
May 30, 2003

Atrocious Joe posted:

Brown Moses started doing some ok tracking of weapons in Syria because he was bored on the forums.

His blog got semi-popular and ended up working with some journalists. This ended up with him discovering a CIA/Gulf weapons supply rat-line from the Balkans to Syrian rebels.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/21/frontroom-blogger-analyses-weapons-syria-frontline

Now, about a year after that story comes out, he has enough support and funding to launch Bellingcat, an organization almost exclusively focused on official enemies of the US and UK. It seems to me that he got a bunch of funding with strings attached for what it could be used on, and he accepted it without question. Easiest way to make sure he isn't an issue and to make him useful to Western imperialism.

As far as I can tell Brown Moses and Bellingcat don't make stuff up, it's a way to produce mostly true propaganda. They seem like a scrappy indie news outlet, so stuff they put out is more believable than if a NATO thinktank produced it. Like, they wrote a lot about barrel bombs being a uniquely cruel weapon of war, which is believable until you realize that Western countries only have "smart" bombs because they invest more money in developing weapons of war than they do on healthcare.

There was a controversy around the OPCW's actions in Syria, which I got extremely bored following, but Bellingcat seemed to get humiliated by the end of it. Also, it seems pretty evident that UK intelligence leaked info on the Skripal poisoning though Bellingcat for some plausible deniability.

the big takeaway from this is if you use wikipedia to ID weapons in warzones, you too may uncover a CIA op in progress.

It almost sounds like the funding they get is more for making sure "he isn't an issue" than "make him useful to Western imperialism". Like the CIA might've been shocked and a little disconcerted he found their supply line to Syria. So here's some hush money from now on, sure you can play geopolitical intelligence analyst if you want or just go to the beach whatevs lol

This reminds me of STRATFOR, another private "intelligence agency" that was discussed in D&D every now and then in the mid 2000's. They billed their services as a "objective, non-partisan intelligence" lol. Are they still around? There has to be some dirty laundry surrounding their whole operation.

"moderate" republicans literally believe their will be a communist coup to put Kamela Harris into power if Biden wins. The brain rot is real.

Minus the communist part obviously, I've had this thought myself. It isn't a stretch to think that there will be constant infighting in a Biden administration, especially between the VP, who will necessarily have expectations of becoming president, and whoever controls Biden, especially Jill. What if Joe really does become incapacitated, but his "team" don't want to lose their positions to the VP's?

it's lovely because they turn so quickly from "here are readily verifiable facts about the interests of the parties involved and inconsistencies of the official timelines that show the likelihood of prior knowledge and make intent a more likely explanation than incompetence" to "here are empirical topics we don't understand but we value our ignorant intuitions over the positions of knowledgeable people". it's confusing the type of skepticism that questions western geopolitical narratives with the type that questions the shape of the earth. it's the opposite of truth seeking, it's searching for mystical explanation. the alternative plane pentagon thing is literal transubstantiation: it cannot be observed or falsified, it serves no purpose to the conspiracy, it's only a belief to be used as a badge of faith and to give a sense of secret knowledge

and it's superfluous and associates disbelieving the official narrative with irrational mythmaking

yeah that was disappointing they just went in on everything, it really diminishes the value of the actual inconsistencies

to me, the most compelling evidence they presented of a 9/11 conspiracy was the anthrax letters. there really seems to be no other explanation to that except as a cherry on top of 9/11 to get the patriot act passed
