If there were a land across the horizon, a land without war or slaves, if there were a land of peace.."

The anime is two cours long. I think adapting to the end of the first 8 volumes would be great.

Did they add that beginning bit with Thorkell?

Yes that was added. I liked it at first but I think that scene doesn't really work at all after realizing its supposed to be the moment Thors deserts. The way it plays out like he just got bored for being too good at fighting rather than how much he came to hate violence.

It just feels a bit off to me to showcase how cool it looks as he slaughters like thirty dudes as the moment he finally quits is all.

That said, I think there is a purposeful contrast between how effortless and dispassionate killing is to him compared to how much he desperately struggled to save that one man's life later in the first episode

To the point where even at the crucial moment - his entire death-in-battle story will succeed or fail based on Thorkell's impression of his actions - he finds himself losing focus, unable to do anything but mechanically go through the motions.

He throws the guy's sword back to the bottom of the lake, spaces out dreaming of Vinland, takes arrows to the chest. With the show starting at the chronological starting point and not with where Thorfinn is now, I'd imagine they mostly wanted an action scene as a hook and hey I thought it was a pretty effective one

I can see it when you put it like that. Either way the fall of hail is my favorite part of the scene.

Thors intentionally breaking his own sword to lower Askeladd's guard is still so drat cool.

Each Wednesday a new chapter of Animal Land Saga is posted to the anime's website. Even without a translation I find them pretty easy to follow along.
Ch. 1

Ch. 2

Ch. 3

Ch. 4

Ch. 5

Ch. 6

Ch. 7

Thorkell's conversation with Floki is my favorite part of his introduction.

"gently caress your patriotism and gently caress your money I only fight 'cause its fun, and it's only fun when my foes are strong."

I meant direction. It's not the easiest material to adapt in a visually interesting way and I feel like the creators really didn't put much effort this time. No background music, no interesting shots, pretty boring landscape... just a bunch of dudes talking

I liked the way the wind picks up as Askeladd delves into his past/plans but other than that I have too agree with you. In particular the shots of Artoias were dull especially compared to last week with the way Gratianus dramatically flourished his cloak and then the shot of the sword in the stone.

I think the first time I read the manga I didn't really care about Bjorn, but when re-reading it/watching the anime I appreciate him a lot more. He's a remorseless thug but he just wanted Askeladd's companionship dammit!

In almost every scene together he was trying to get Askeladd to open up to him but he doesn't succeed until the very end. It's meant to be ambiguous how Askeladd truly felt but his reaction to missing Bjorn's heart feels pretty telling to me.

Askeladd doing the anime villain thing where thinks it's over will always be hilarious to me.

"I WIN!"

"gently caress!"

That was a pretty solid adaptation all in all. It's a bummer this little conversation didn't make it in though.
