It's also worth considering that even if their leadership and tactics are suspect that they are a lightning rod for all the existing activism to get around though and good may come about despite its founder being a sex pest and their strategy to capitulate to existing power structures.

Their most recent episode was also interesting, looking at a report from a right wing thinktank & former Met bigwig about Extinction Rebellion. The conclusion is more or less that their tactic of sucking up to the police and focusing on being polite and inoffensive both doesn't work very well as a protest, and is pointless in any case because the UK authorities see any anticapitalist movement as an enemy and will work to destroy it regardless of whether or not they say thank you when they get arrested. I guess XR probably got a few more reasonable centrists onside by respecting decorum, but what loving good is that?

Relatedly this is why I advocate vulnerability as a method of building trust. Especially if you can cultivate areas of yourself that you don't mind getting burned occasionally though honestly I don't think I ever have been, people are generally much nicer than you might think.

But being willing to make the first move and share something that makes you even superficially vulnerable is key, I think, to building other people's trust in you. Obviously you don't want to go overboard cos there is such a thing as too much information but like, expecting everyone else to always make the first move or waiting for it to happen on accident is by far the silliest way to go about it.

100% agree with this, despite having various traditionally competitive jobs I have yet to have anyone I’ve opened up to take advantage of it, and it’s a reliable fast track to building trust.

Wouldn't being a massive shitebag be a bit intimidating? :v:

Its definitely not my voice because if you* don't speak to me then I won't say a word. I know being introverted and shy doesn't help, but its also confusing. Who ever heard of an intimidating guy who's shy? I'm trying to overcome it by forcing myself to be a bit more extroverted. Its difficult for me because I just can't stand small talk. Its bullshit and meaningless and when there is a good conversation going I'm quite happy to sit back and listen for a while before giving my own input (which might be because I've convinced myself I'm a loving idiot and will have nothing of value to contribute to the conversation). I've been able to manage the old staple of talking about the weather with random people recently, only because I've had to constantly explain no, I'm not dying, I just can't handle hot weather and would rather be in an igloo.

Quite a bit really, you aren't going to be inviting a climate expert or someone who want to build a movement with lasting power, you'll be inviting someone who wants to doomsay about the future of climate change and say that direct action now is the solution but not advance any actual solutions themselves. They might be interested in the Labour Green New Deal but they'll just try and get you to agree that everyone needs to be shutting places down until they get their citizens assembly and then stand down again.

They definitely have a habit of pulling out of places too early - days early in London and Cardiff - but that's the whole point of their pseudo-antagonistic attitude. They want headlines about applying pressure but aren't willing to actually face off against the state so they annoy the public for a bit and then co-operate with the police when the chips are down. It's a model designed to fail and the fallout will be actual eco-terrorism or members falling into despair.

Which is why groups need to be around XR but not supportive of it - to attract the frustrated XR members into useful activity.

Even Malaysia is considering full decriminalization now, but no legal sales of anything and you still get killed for trafficking if they decide to pursue that angle.

Part of that might be half their police using meth because of the hours they're working trying to police the failing war on drugs though.

Pulled from the populace on pain of punishment and forced to assist the guards against their own, seems to fit well with the idea of Special Constables in Reformation England.

note re: Malaysia

in the west there's an archetype of a young political activist, typically male, who is highly motivated by drug legalization but otherwise holds a host of deeply reactionary cultural politics

in Malaysia this has the equivalent of the young Islamist, also typically male, who has Opinions on the appropriate place of women, non-muslims, etc. in society but is otherwise indulgent of meth abuse. iran, pakistan, bangladesh all being notionally pro-harm-reduction plays into this, as has the drift in the image of addicts as partying Western expats/Western decadent corruptors to local people on meth.

anyway the context here is a coalescing electoral pact between UMNO (former ruling party) and PAS (hard Islamists), hence the triple push of a lower voting age, decriminalization of unsanctioned street processions and rallies, and the drug decriminalization proposal. None of these are anti-Islamic as such (compare e.g. the move to abolish the death penalty, which the government quickly backed off from) but are nonetheless popular with the Malay liberal set

on the drug decrim specifically, note that Malaysia, like Thailand and Singapore, has a presumption-of-trafficking standard (i.e. possession over a certain limit is presumed to be trafficking unless otherwise proven). These countries then set thresholds very low. The practice was that prosecutors would selectively decide what level of possession to actually write charges for, even if the individual was found with a higher amount. Hence, mandatory punishment (incl capital punishment) was actually discretionary anyway - intended in part to shield these countries against Western criticism, which was already trenchant back when the global war on drugs was kicking into high gear - recall that a certain M. Thatcher was a fierce critic of Malaysia hanging two Australians for drug trafficking. The meat of the change seems to be the Home Affairs ministry formally transferring the hoopla to the Health ministry; exactly how will have to wait for the actual Bill to materialize (right now it's not even a white paper). The domestic optics is another thing of course.

She was a bit old and poorly and initially not at all chill, but over the last 5 weeks she'd gotten much more comfortable coming in, eating & generally being around people. Just Monday night she was crawling between my legs while I tried to cook dinner. Didn't see her about yesterday but it was wet and she often hides under the shed to stay dry but today, noticed she was just under the shed and cold and not moving. It sucks, didn't have her for long but she'd already grown on me but it seemed she just died in her sleep which isn't the worst way to go. Not a cat who'd sit on your lap or anything but I had hopes that she'd get there eventually, she just came into the living room for the first time Monday.

I'm sorry :( RIP kitty. If it's any consolation, cats will almost always go find somewhere quiet and alone to die, so she was probably happy hiding under the shed and passed on peacefully.

Schniff posted:

One of the strategies of totalitarian regimes is to have legal regulations (criminal laws) so severe that, if taken literally, everyone is guilty of something. But then their full enforcement is withdrawn. In this way, the regime can appear merciful: ‘You see, if we wanted, we could have all of you arrested and condemned, but do not be afraid, we are lenient …’

The discussion itself is good for international optics though, because you can point and say "if even places where they hang people for dealing are looking at decriminalization, why are we not also looking at decriminalization?"
Whether it turns into a hellhole of forced treatment like some other SEAsian countries is a very different matter.
