So now I ask the question to you all.

Is Planet of the Apes an Isekai story? Is Final Fantasy X an Isekai story or a fake-out Isekai story?

They are both fake out isekais.

Time travel isn’t isekai and I will die on this hill

The problem with isekai is that majority of isekai that I’ve read would have been a lot better if they weren’t isekai. You don’t need the codified stats and the power fantasy removing all sense of challenge when you have an interesting world and plot!

I bought the Final Fantasy isekai and so far it avoids the excesses of isekai manga. No slavery, the protagonist isn’t stupidly overpowered (his big moment in the first volume is just putting bomb fragments on arrows to make bomb arrows), the female characters seem reasonably dressed

I have now read all six physically published volumes of the Final Fantasy isekai. So far my initial assessments are correct: despite the one lady who’s 25% boob by volume it doesn’t fall into any of the pit traps of isekai. The main character has the ability of Libra which lets him know some qualities of non-living objects, as well as read any language. Knowing about Final Fantasy games gives him a certain savviness, like knowing how to bounce reflected spells to get around an enemy’s reflect status but it doesn’t win fights for them, it just helps them survive.

It’s worth checking out if you like Final Fantasy.

I don't think the request is to just hand out more gamey isekai (which is ironic because Digimon itself is a game franchise first) but just other isekai anime to put on the list. Plus if they have already seen The Familiar of Zero and Escaflowne there's plenty of room to recommend stuff not from the last decade.

Also, because most of my picks have been mentioned I'll just put up Marchen Awaken's Romance, with the caveat that I've only read the manga but there's an anime of it as well.

Because I can’t help myself, Digimon started as a series of virtual pets, not games.

I read the first volume of Ascension of a Bookworm. It’s interesting enough that I ordered the next few volumes. I appreciate that Myne encounters failure pretty often, especially early on, it really takes the edge off the power fantasy aspects of isekai.

I really enjoyed the payoff chapter at the end where three adults talked about how completely ridiculous she is.
