I see there is a discussion about what to put on chips. this means it is mandatory for someone from Edinburgh to pipe up about Edinburgh chippy sauce and for everyone else to say how crap and/or disgusting it is and for the Edinburgh person to refuse to countenance any downtalking of the Great Somewhat Edible Condiment until the entire conversation is united around what twats people from Edinburgh are in various ways and forcing the interloper out by throwing things at them until they somehow manage to gently caress off back to england and scotland simultaneously as is demanded of them by various quarters

i volunteer as tribute. salt and sauce is great

Salt and sauce is one of the things I miss most about Edinburgh. I've tried to replicate it by mixing 50/50 HP and white vinegar. Comes close but not close enough. I'm sure gravy/curry/cheese is fine but proper chippy sauce is spot on.

I was just going to post that. It does a good job of throwing shade on the fubpee crowd but I think it is too subtle for them to get that message. For example:

grauniad posted:

Remainists often describe Brexit as a distraction from the real problems Britain faces – austerity, inequality, a creaking NHS. Yet those problems existed long before the referendum, without galvanising most remainists in the way Brexit has.

This skewers them pretty well. Further up it mentions how they're radicalised in much the same way as the gammons: pining for a time that never really existed, and if it did exist was solely to their benefit at the expense of the growing number of impoverished.

I cannot believe that wasn't deliberate. Nobody could possibly be that dumb.

If it was deliberate, I don't even think it means anything. It might serve as a nice cover for some poo poo they want to bury. They're already saying a snap GE in september is on the cards so it's not like this adds new information.

Belfast Zoo used to have free-roaming ringtailed lemurs, they were lovely. I understand why they don’t do it any more but interacting with them and the prairie dogs was one of the comparatively few highlights of being a kid round there in the early 90s.

Aww they don't have the lemurs anymore? They were one of the better bits. When I was back a few years ago I was wondering why I didn't see them, thought the poo poo weather had kept them inside. The prairie dogs are great though. I remember they used to interfere with so many picnics.

I took this photo there last time I was over:

Banks fans itt I need your help/honest opinions. Because the Culture novels come up not infrequently in the thread (and because I enjoyed The Wasp Factory and some M. Banks short stories when I read them years ago) I figured I'd give Consider Phlebas a shot. And after about 3/4s of the way through it's....ok, I guess? Given the love the series gets I feel like I'm missing something. Is it worth persevering with, or is it more likely just not my thing if I'm kinda cool on the first one?

Consider Phlebas is much more generic than his later stuff, he was finding his feet and the culture wasn't really that fleshed out. I'm a big fan of Excession just because the ship personalities really come into play. I'd be tempted to recommend that as a first read although others may disagree. Use of weapons is great in my opinion but some people don't like the way it is ordered (and the plot twist is dark as gently caress).

Non-culture, but I really liked the algebraist as well.

Seems like a hell of a lot of work to dump on university admins during the one time of the year when all the academics aren't there tho. If it's even possible to get 2 million admissions done in the month or so between a level results and the start of term.

Unless they're going to give everyone a year off between A levels and University, which would be great but would also need them to actually have something to do.

In principle, it's a great idea, in practice I'm not sure how it would work, logistically.

I don't get it- in the current system offers are made based on predictions. In the new system they'd be made based on results. A university can say 'you need to get AAB' or whatever, and if your exam results are better than AAB you're in. How is this any more work than before for the uni?

On that note, does it feel like the “Labour is literally the next Hitler of antisemitism” seem to have dried up in the last week or so as they can focus on the Jeremy Corbyn plot to get instilled as life president by tricking people with a vonc?

On twitter once the centrist superstars wound their jaws back in at how badly they played it the return to form was 'but but but an antisemite PM is intolerable!', so I'd expect the rags to pick this up soon enough too.
