He got started on that rant because he was claiming that Scotland loves oil and hates windmills, just like him. Which is why he loves it so much and chose to own property there.

Didn't Scotland just commit to building a bunch of windmills despite him?

They were going to build a wind farm right on the coast 2003, but the First Minister of Scotland stopped the company's permit to build it after Trump bought the property. He also had the the sand dunes at the golf course declared a "protected habitat" and helped Trump navigate land deals to make the course happen. The assumption was that the course would bring in a lot of money.

In 2011, the same company applied to create a windfarm out at sea. It wasn't going to be built on the coastline near Trump's property like the previous plan, but it would be visible from the Trump property. Trump also tried to get that blocked and it was tied up for almost 10 years in legal limbo. But, a new Scottish government fought his lawsuit and eventually won in 2019. They then issued the permit and had the farm built out at sea in early 2020.

That weed bill is a sort of last minute hail Mary from state congressional Republicans. It has to pass by tomorrow and probably won't.

There is a different Republican bill that has a good chance of passing that is more limited. That bill just allows cities and counties to ban weed dispensaries and redirects 20% of the tax revenue to law enforcement training instead of 80% going to law enforcement without any restrictions.

Both are bad, but one is much worse.

zoux posted:

So the "why bother voting" guy is misrepresenting legislative processes in order to make a lovely anti-electoral statement?

Not that he's alone in that, even the most prestige media outlets do it. We're constantly getting "Texas Would Secede Under Republican Bill" articles about a rally with 25 attendants or a single bill with no co-sponsors from a nutjob House member that has no chance of even being referred to committee much less becoming law.

He's right that Republicans have openly been trying to change parts of the amendment that are against the spirit of the referendum that passed.

It's just that there are two competing Republican bills because one group threw out this much more expansive one at the last second after the initial talks broke down. The more expansive one might pass, but it seems unlikely because it has to pass by tomorrow.

The other Republican bill probably will pass and it doesn't (currently) address homegrown issues and changes the law enforcement money a little less.

The things all the Republicans agree on changing:

- Let cities and counties ban dispensaries, cultivators, and processors.
- Direct tax money to law enforcement.
- Ban on public smoking.
- Exemption for landlords to ban marijuana.
- Unspecified "guardrails for children" around advertising and location.
- Capping the total number of dispensaries allowed in the state.
- Capping THC levels.
- Raise the marijuana tax rate above the 10% in the referendum.

Things all the Republicans don't agree on:

- How much money should go to law enforcement (there are several proposals that range from somewhere between 20% and 100%).
- If the law enforcement money should be restricted only to traffic enforcement and training or have no restrictions.
- What to do about home grow situations.
- What level THC should be capped at.
- What the specific tax rate for marijuana should be other than just "above 10%"

Republicans shouldn’t have had the ability to do a goddamn thing to a law voted by referendum was that guys point.

It was a referendum to pass a law and not a constitutional amendment. The legislature can pass bills to change laws with a majority vote.

It is bad that they are making changes that go against the spirit of the law, but legislatures always have the ability to pass laws.

What are the deadlines such that one bill has to pass today and one doesn't, are they in different chambers?

The newer bill was done under an expedited process and the referendum kicks in tomorrow. From a legal perspective, they have to finish it by the end of the legislative session. From a practical perspective, it will be very difficult to organize the entire legal marijuana industry, issue permits, collect a certain amount of taxes, and allow home grow operations for a while, but then reorganize the entire system to shut all of that down again before January.

The new young online conservatives all have a weird "traditional values counterculture" vibe.

Their favorite topics are movies/tv/video games going woke, "here's why liberalism and feminism are preventing you from having sex," and "[X] is trying to brainwash you or take something from you, but you're too smart or brave to let them. Let me tell you why..."

4Chan really set a weird template for modern right-wing youth movements, some people copied it, were very successful, and now hammer those hot topic buttons as much as they can.

That's the weird standout, because I can remember the original "traditional values counterculture" types going off about gangster rap and violent video games and video nasties, and they were mostly old Christian women also saying that porn causes rape and contraceptives and liberal culture cause premarital sex.

It's not really a standout and flows with the other points. The message they are selling is that the move away from traditional gender norms hurts men by encouraging women to not marry young, not to have kids early, and to be financially independent, which hurts a lot of sources that pushed people to date and marry earlier before.

It ties into the "feminism/liberalism/modern day values are taking things away from you" line that is basically the one connected subplot of all their arguments.

It's also why there is such a huge focus on "alpha males" and whatnot in the youth conservative culture.

The idea is that 20% of men are hogging all the women because marriage and monogamy has been destroyed. That is why you need to become an alpha male. Then, you can be part of the crew that gets all the women and women are biologically attracted to alphas, so you can pick the best one and settle down like you are supposed to.

zoux posted:

It's incredible to me that they can take those positions while remaining generally secular. Typically such movements have some religious bloc behind them, but these guys are just like that. I guess the leftists who became tradcath fascists are using religion but that's more about shocking their peers than trying to change society.

There's some religious undertones, but you're right. They shifted from religion to more secular ideas about masculinity and being persecuted. It seems to have worked in closing the gap a little between left-wing and right-wing young white nerds. It used to be a 65/35 split, but is closer to 50/50 among under 25s now.
