Disco all night long!

I am just in the very early stages of planning a new build. Probably actually going to come together in the next few months. I haven't actually built a computer since about 2008, so I have absolutely no idea where the line is between "high end" and "excessive", and what will really work out well for what I'm planning. Money is not too much of a problem or anything, but I don't want to end up buying something that costs much more for very little benefit. Talking with some other people before I posted this made me realize I actually have no idea now what counts as medium end, high end and excessively ridiculous in 2020. As far as preferred resolution, I dunno, I can stand not gaming in 4k or something, what really matters is that this is more than enough for smooth VR. Probably going with a Rift S, but still considering maybe dropping the money on the Index 2.

I live in China, so everything is going to come from China. No newegg links and stuff :/

So far, as far as cpu/gpu goes I'm considering

This r9 3900x

and an rtx 2070 super

Although, I dont know if the 2070 is actually the best choice, a Radeon VII seems to be going for about the same price here, the only thing making me really lean towards nvidia is ray tracing, I don't want to be left out if that becomes a thing that actually matters sooner rather than later. If a Radeon VII doesn't just compete but actually beat the 2070super then, yeah that might matter more than ray tracing I may never use.

The rest of it hasn't really been planned out, I figure that will come together once I decide on a cpu/gpu.

What do you guys think? Any better suggestions than what I'm thinking here? Anything I might not be considering that I should be?

Awesome, thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for.

So, would a 2080 super be overkill then? It's a big jump in price, and I just assumed it wouldn't be necessary going into this but it's not so out there I couldn't consider it if it would be worth it.

Going with the 3700x would save me about 1000rmb (about $150), the 2080 is 2000rmb more than than the 2070, so it'd only really raise the cost 1000rmb compared to what I had thought before.

I'm about ready to buy I think, anything I'm missing or might not be the best choice that anyone can see before I actually go and buy it all?

Sorry for all the Chinese, I put everything into pc part picker but it may not be exactly accurate, I wouldn't be surprised if there are some differences between parts on the market in China and their US counterparts.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sb7jgJ
Also, pc part picker didn't have my case.

In the screenshot you cant see it but it was a bundle where you could choose between different cpus to go with that mobo. I chose the ASRock x570 taichi with a Ryzen 7 3700x,

2x8gb sticks of 3600mhz ddr4 (I figured, the mobo has 4 dimm slots, I just wanna get this up and running. Come next month or so I'll buy another 16gb stick)

Samsung pm981 m2 512gb ssd, not exactly sure on this ssd, it seems weird. But I figured, I got this laptop that I plan on getting fixed eventually, when it broke I borrowed the SSD from it and transplanted it into the laptop I'm on now. If I need to, I'll buy a new SSD for this pc later and use the pm981 in the laptop when I get it fixed.

No hdd yet, I got hdds coming out the rear end. I'll buy one for this machine later I guess, probably that 2tb Seagate one I crossed out.

msi RTX 2070 super ventus oc, I think that's right? pc part picker had it listed but no price, dunno what that's about.

rog strix 650w psu. I am not entirely sure about this either. I picked 650w because pc part picker said I need 374w, but I wanted some overhead. Also because I trust asus not to sell a psu that burns my apartment down. That literally happened at a college dorm here maybe 6 months back and the whole dorm was toast. So, I didn't wanna trust some Chinese brand.

The case, I dunno it's just a case. I didn't pick anything expensive, it's ATX so I don't see it being a problem.

I'll get a good monitor later, I have some already so no need for that right now. I also got keyboard and mouse taken care of for now.

Anything I'm missing? Anything that might be a dumb choice for one reason or another? The grand total is 11,072 Chinese RMB or, $1,563.71. If that's too expensive for what I'm getting I can shop around, but it might just be a disparity in how much hardware costs in China vs America.

Edit: Also, I don't need cooling for now with the Ryzen 7, right? It comes with adequate cooling?

What website are you using and what's the other options for mobo? I can navigate Chinese enough to see if there's some of the thread favorites/standard recs on offer for comparable prices if you like.

3700X is more than enough for gaming and general stuff, and the cooler it comes with is fine; if it's too loud for you or you want to overclock in the future you can get a bigger cooler then.

You don't really need more than 16GB of ram for most things so you don't need to be in a rush to get more. You also may want to check that RAM on whatever MOBO you choose's compatibility list. Generally most everything should work but it's not bad to check.

It's 上海老牛电脑 on taobao. I am not completely tied to them or anything, I just went with them because they had the Mobo+cpu combo I wanted, and then I sorta built it up from the parts they had for sale, that way it all comes at once. Nothing sucks more than getting everything for a new PC except the GPU which is mysteriously a day or two behind in shipping, you know?

There were plenty of other mobo +CPU combos, but I'm so unfamiliar with newer AMD hardware I didn't really know much besides that I wanted 4 dimm slots, USB C, and X570, I googled mobos for the 3700x and the taichi looked like it was a good one in my price range. There were cheaper 2070 supers throughout taobao, but I wanted to go with a brand like MSI or Asus since I at least know them and have had good experience with them before. Since it's taobao I didn't wanna risk getting some weird 10 year old gpu rebranded as a 2070 super or anything.

The ram, yeah I'll check that out. I don't actually know the brand, just that Google told me to get 3600mhz ram for the 3700x.

Well it's asking me to log in to see stuff on their site which I'm not going to bother with, but but glancing at the page I can see it looks like prices aren't way off so in general:
PSU - ROG Strix is indeed supposedly a solid PSU (as per LTT tier list at least) but it's apparently manufactured by Seasonic and noted as a bit expensive; might want to check versus the similar offerings from Seasonic (海韻) and Corsair (海盜船) which are generally the thread go-tos.
MOBO - Taichi seems noted for being good for overclocking but if you don't intend to do that right now you can probably go cheaper; looks like it's around ~300 USD from your price? A cheaper board would do you just as well unless you're looking for some specific features on that one. One thread recommendation is the Aorus Elite/Wifi which also meets your requirements (X570, front USB-C. Basically any ATX board these days has 4 RAM slots insofar as I'm aware) which is ~100 USD cheaper than the Taichi usually. Make sure your case has a front USB-C port if you're looking for one specifically.
RAM - Also re: ram, if you're looking at the same things I saw when I googled, they mention 3600, but the 3600 you've got there is CL19 which is on the slower side; overall not something to sweat, but if you can get a better combo of speed and timing for the same price you might want to go for it.

Hey, thanks. This saved me a bit that I put towards a better case that has front usb-c, I hadn't even considered that before. I hadnt considered seasonic because I wasn't familiar with the brand and sort of wrote it off as 'probably dangerous Chinese brand' but they really do make some more affordable psus.

Now I just gotta hope it ships fast and go out monitor shopping. :D

What's the deal with Freesync and G-sync? I thought, because I'm getting the nvidia 2070 super (tomorrow should be delivery day, super pumped) I should go with a g-sync monitor. But, I was looking at the lg-34gl750 https://www.digitweek.com/lg-34gl750-b-review/ and that review says freesync, the ad selling it says "Freesync (g-sync support). Does it really matter? Is it gonna work just the same, or is "support" not going to be the same as native actual g-sync?

Is 2k fine a 2070 super? I was looking at 4k monitors too, but if I was gonna go with a good brand like LG for that it looks like it's gonna be a poo poo ton more.

So I built that computer a while back, (Ryzen 3700x, 2070 super, I went with the ASRock x570 taichi mobo) and skimped on a lot of storage just to cut costs and get it built, just got a 512gb m2 ssd.

Now I'm looking for more storage and, tbh advice about ssds and what to go with is kinda confusing me. I thought, at first maybe just get a SATA ssd, like get a WD blue or something. But now I'm thinking, I still have a few m2 slots on my mobo and random people on youtube are acting like it really does matter. But really, what do I get when money isn't too big of an issue, but I also dont want to get something stupidly unnecessary for a gaming/VR machine?

I'm looking at the WD Black or the 960 evo, the 970 evo and the 970 evo plus. Is there really going to be any meaningful difference between them if I'm not doing anything heavier than gaming? Is there maybe a better option I'm not considering?

Idiot question: my old system had a 250gb SSD for Windows and a couple other things and a 1tb spinny discs HDD for bulk stuff. If I plug the old unformatted Windows drive straight into an otherwise completely new build and switch it on, will the existing Windows installation be able figure out the new system or is it going to poo poo all over itself?

I'm guessing the sensible thing is to reinstall Windows but just curious as to how bad the lazy route would be?

I've had to do this before, this is gonna sound like the dumbest thing in the world but I was modding my bios and enabled the wrong thing. Suddenly all usb drives, keyboard, etc did not work before Windows was loaded. Only worked in Windows, not GRUB or Linux or before the OS (so I couldn't get into the bios to fix it).

Popped out another hdd from another machine with Windows 10, swapped it into the broken computer, it booted into windows and worked well enough (but was pretty terrible, I think because the donor machine had a completely different gpu) to reflash the bios with a stock one. It didn't even inactivate itself, though I imagine if I had connected it to the Internet it would have. I do remember there was a whole lot of "setting up your new hardware" and that mess when I booted into it.

Edit: I guess that didn't answer your question too much. But it definitely felt like a broken windows install while I was in it. It could probably be fixed by just actually going and getting the drivers but at that point it's not really the lazy route anymore. It'd take as much or less work to just install a fresh copy of Windows and go from there.

You still got the manual for your mobo? They should be labeled in there.

Speaking of pcie4, I got a 2070s on an asrock x570 taichi, a 5900x. So, pcie4.

gpuz says the gpu is running on pcie3

I just assumed that was what it should be, because the gpu doesn't actually use pcie4, but is that true? Is this all how it should be? I remember some article or something a bit ago that talked about minor performance improvements in some situations running a gpu on pcie4 even if it doesn't need it, but maybe that was just the 30 series.

A friend tried going that route for a 3080, and at first they told him 2 months. 2 months later they told him it'd be another 8 months.

Having a ramdisk and actually using it in a super-nerd optimizing everything way is really awesome though.

But it's not really practical for gaming. Drop your browser cache in a ramdisk every boot.
