I need a word for both banal and awful. Goltzfrosch. I made it up. German is good at these mixed things. So then I thought of the boiling frog. And instead of just doing 'boiling frog' in German (kochender Frosch) I found out that German physiologist Friedrich Goltz demonstrated that a frog that has had its brain removed will remain in slowly heated water, but an intact frog attempted to escape the water when it reached 25 °C. I think that says something. I used to follow Sibel Edmond's blog which used to be called "Boiling Frogs". I know she changed the name a couple of years ago but I have lost track now. As I was away and off news for a few days, and as the US have started changing the story about what happened in Iraq to bring about the assassination of QS, it's getting harder to discover what really happened. From glances at the news a couple of days ago, I kinda had the notion that some Iranians held a protest outside the US Embassy in Baghdad but now it's being briefed out as an 'attack' 'justifying' the assassination. Is my memory correct or was it an 'attack' from the start?

The nearest they could get would be if they'd identified a hitherto-unknown flaw either in a widely-used bit of network kit (not impossible but *extremely* unlikely) or in something like AWS or another of the large shared services platforms (slightly more likely, but rather easier to mitigate). In either case you're talking a couple of days of unreliable service, although given the sheer idiocy of the setup of a lot of internet-connected businesses that might have all sorts of interesting economic knock-on effects. Knock out the mediterranean cables (if they snuck in there) and you've cut off huge swathes of Africa, Middle East, parts of India. Happened twice while I lived out there when cables got ripped up by fishing trawlers, took several days for service to resume. At some point during the Egyptian revolution scuba divers trying to cut the cables off the coast of Alexandria were caught. (Mind you the second time, Etisalat routed us through some fantastic connection only normally available to 'private' customers and I've never had such fast internet for a few days before the usual snail returned).

KOGAHAZAN!! posted:Does anyone have any ISP recommendations? I'm trying to get to get my new home hooked up after moving but the automated service has some unspecified problem with the new address and trying to get hold of a real person to talk to has been like trying to communicate with Mars via smoke signal. I'm using Three Home Broadband £22pm for one month now - NO LAND LINE NECESSARY. Requires decent 4G (and 5G available in a few areas though have read some problems with that one). Unlimited data. It wasn't my original plan when I moved in November but after no joy from another provider (requiring a phone line put in) who kept messing my order about (ordered on 24th OCTOBER, still nothing by end of November), I ordered the Three hub on the Tuesday, router arrived on the Wednesday, I'm on line in under 30 minutes. Just tested my speed and got 63.8Mbps down and 27.9Mbps up. I often get 80 Mbps down. There were some issues with Three yesterday but was still able to get on with 30Mbps down. Otherwise it's been perfect performance since I got it a month ago. Advantage is if you move again you just take it with you (obviously depending on you getting a 4G signal). I picked the router with the 4 ethernet ports (obviously it is wifi too). There's a slightly more expensive offer with a router that has built in Alexa but only 1 ethernet port. http://www.three.co.uk/store/broadband/home-broadband Jaeluni Asjil fucked around with this message at 16:03 on Jan 6, 2020 |

But I digress.) Re funding, not sure quite how it works right now, but back in the olden days when I did mine (about 20 years ago), PhD applications were invited to fill places available on projects for which research funding had been granted (and a certain number of PhD folk to go with it) and you'd get funding from whichever research council was paying overall. Mine was PPARC back in those ancient times. Otherwise, you can apply anyway as 'self-funding' then you would have to explore what bodies might be in the business of giving grants or loans to PhD students based on subject matter or other non-subject criteria.
