So, is all this social distancing also going to do a number on flu, cold, etc.?

I've got to imagine it'll have knock on effects for other diseases, right?

Norovirus is down a lot (but there's a disclaimer that labs might be not be handling tests).

https://assets.publishing.service.g...ks_12_to_13.pdf

It's still at 30% of normal rate which I think wouldn't be enough for coronavirus to burn out, but there's a reporting time lag so maybe it'll go further. And this is norovirus so the dip is maybe more about closing restaurants and cruise ships than social distancing itself.

e:Flu also appears to be well down but again question about reporting.

Because if true that means the actual fatality rate is a lot lower.

I live fairly near a sewage processing plant. Given SARS and diarrhoea aerosols, who thinks that might be a contagion vector? You can smell the plant from a few hundred metres away: is that aerosolised fresh virusey poo poo, poo poo that's old enough or treated enough for the virus to die, or virus-free gases?

There were two sentences in my post.
The second in the context of the first, in context of the very limited threatening behavior by some (admittedly assumed white) people described in the article, conveys a message about racism being depressingly alive and well. The amount of threatening and confrontational behavior referred to in the article would have gotten people of color arrested in many jurisdictions.

I think we're all well aware of racism, and how it applies to law enforcement.
My point is that violence is one of the primary drivers of political change in all directions throughout history, and that successfully using violence is not about being white, it's about being in a position of strength.
The pandemic has shown the current government to be pathetically inept, this is an opportunity to create a better organised and stronger alternative power structure.

Sadly makes way too much sense. Still, I understand why ~average people~ who consume right-wing media are behaving as they are, but Koch/De Vos? Maybe I'm dense but I don't get their endgame here. Like, I get that the Kochs can fund climate denial because it makes them money now and they'll vacate this mortal coil (one of 'em already did!) before the environment becomes untenable. That makes sense from a certain psychopathic perspective. But the economic consequences of not handling this virus are already severe, and long-term, the economy would be better off if we did some not-fun lockdown stuff for 6-8 weeks and then carefully - carefully - opened some things back up.

Koch/De Vos/etc. have to know this, right? They are amoral as gently caress, but not stupid.

This is something that's been bothering me about the hapless and late response in some countries - people may have elected giant babies, but why were all the other sources of power and influence asleep at the wheel too?
The mega-rich are so insulated they don't have to care, but company boards, senior civil servants, pension fund managers, generals, hospital directors, newspaper editors, the loving royal family and the pope all either do better in a functioning economy or are old enough to be at personal risk, and are informed enough to reach the same level of foresight and understanding of this that a GBS thread managed. Yet apparently none of forced the issue through the heads of the politicians in US, UK, Italy, Brazil, and mostly don't even seem to have done their own preparations.

The people in positions of privilege and wealth don’t see themselves as humanity’s leaders. They don’t.

They feel no responsibility to lead or protect mankind and exist only to exploit others and better themselves materially.

But that's what I'm saying - there are a lot of (non-billionaire) rich and powerful people who have been hosed by this. Where was the flood of phone calls saying "if this hurts us, you aren't getting a campaign contribution," or the big employers rolling out mandatory masks and travel bans and quarantine and WFH for employees before it was recommended. The only organisations that seemed to even beat government slightly were sports leagues.

The point about leaders who want to dismantle government is a good one, but those leaders also all exploit xenophobia, so even if other precautions were unacceptable they could have closed their borders and been fully on-brand.

e: Halliburton can manipulate their way to billions in Iraq but can't stop oil prices hitting the floor due to a preventable pandemic?

Must be great for the medics to know that by working so hard and risking their lives they're contributing to the problem, because people are dumb.
