Some simple math. Start with a population of 1,000,000. Let's assume 25% of the population gets infected so we have 250,000 cases. If we assume 25% of the infected require some sort of medical treatment and 3% will die we have 62,500 people needing hospitalization/treatment and 7,500 people die. Of course there are probably a lot more infected then reported cases so if we halve those numbers we're still left with a 9-11 death toll for every million people. e.I pulled these numbers out of my arse of course so who knows what fish flu will actually end up doing.

The fact the disease has a 10-14 asymptomatic period means they have to quarantine absolutely everyone who's potentially been in contact with the virus. Also by the time a city has confirmed virus it could already have been there and spreading for weeks. Also I've never seen Contagion but I have seen the one where they want to firebomb the town.
