the mainland is kind of a cultural wasteland post-90s, it's just the blandest most repetitive poo poo imaginable. I think Zhang Yimou's Hero is partly to blame, it showed you can have a scarily pro-authoritarian movie and just hide it with some production values (lol hollywood) and get universally praised.
