I find this more of a damnation of Australian foreign policy. PNG is almost a colony of Australia and we allow this to happen.

We’ve dropped the ball in a big way. It’s astounding how little we’ve worked to defend our geopolitical power in our backyard. We could’ve supported all of the pacific islands with aid to directly counter Chinese interests but we’ve pissed away whatever home ground advantage we had through inaction and forcing them to look elsewhere.

The worst part is that since the US is basically imploding and won’t be paying any attention to foreign policy, we’re hiding behind a wet tissue.

This is a pretty big misreading of the situation. The US is a clusterfuck domestically and Trump is a bad diplomat but US hard power is fine and isn't going anywhere.
Eh, my read of it is that whilst the gears are still turning there (and won’t stop no matter who is in charge), the ability for the US to shape public discourse about an issue is somewhat paralysed. What’s already underway will stay in place, but I don’t see the US being a leader in the same capacity as previously.

The executive has an outsize role in US politics from a public perspective. Especially overseas, you rarely hear about what the Congress is doing, it’s pretty much only ever Trump. Given he is clearly just flailing around trying to do whatever he can to increase his re-electability, I don’t see the US (through him) being able to provide a consistent narrative that will unite countries in an effort to push back.

Sure, the gears of the US foreign relations will continue to turn but that’s not the same as a rallying call of leadership that I think’s necessary for dealing with this.

I’ll concede I phrased it fairly poorly and made it sound like the US is worthless diplomatically. They’re absolutely not, but I don’t think they’re currently doing a great deal of leadership either.

I managed to convince the hotel to let me deliver a microwave to my mate’s hotel quarantine in Sydney, and then she ordered microwave meals and did poached eggs and stuff like that because yeh the food was... ordinary. Similar quality to that in some cases, maybe slightly better. Exact same price too, AUD$1500 = RMB7200.

Then I tried the same trick with another mate in Brisbane and the hotel refused to take the microwave, but they instead gave far better quality food, would deliver snacks too, and did single-room-at-a-time police escorts out to the rooftop pool for some fresh air. So those sorts of luxuries weren’t as necessary.

Small poo poo like a microwave + letting you do grocery deliveries goes a long way to helping get through the quarantine.

My worst baijiu experience was on this stuff. The timestamps between the this photo from the start of the business dinner and the photo of me having 5 empty bottles in front of me is about 2.5 hours. Would not recommend. I'm glad there was a toilet ensuite off the dinner room. I probably came out with a mild level of permanent brain and/or organ damage from consuming it.

I'm a baijiu business dinner newbie in the scheme of things, but my tactic is to use snow beer or some other basic lovely lager to help wash out the flavour. It's functionally close enough to water when it comes to adding additional booze to the night, but it's got flavour unlike water so it helps mask the hellscape that is your taste buds after that horror.

This is the BBC World News, their international news show. It was indeed still available as I used to watch it whenever I was in CN. It'd occasionally just go black for minutes at a time whenever the censors decided it was doing a Naughty Thing, such as covering the HK protests. However, it was the only thing I bothered to watch in the hotel as background noise unless some good sport was on.

Isn’t this the weird confusing system where a bachelors is basically super high school, and only a masters and PhD are at a “university”?

My company hired a guy, seems smart and nice enough, had a masters from a Chinese university and then a PhD from a Japanese one.

Preschool still the best education out of all the above though.

If Australia, no.

University occurs after 12 years of schooling, with 'high school' referring to the last part of this. You'd leave this at 17 or 18 years of age typically, but people may choose to leave at 15-16 years of age and pursue a trade (though it's common to finish it before doing a trade anyway).

At uni, you do a 3 year 'base' bachelor degree and then may optionally choose to do honours (with a good enough GPA), which involves writing a thesis (or equivalent) in a 4th year and which if you pass confers a bachelor with honours. In some subjects (e.g. engineering) there is a mandatory thesis and 4th year, and you get honours based on your GPA.

Upon finishing your bachelors, you can then choose to do masters, which is typically 2 years, but may only be 1 year for certain degrees if you roll the honours part into it and do a straight 5-year blob of a degree.

PhD is then separate and you generally need a masters. As mentioned, it's variable length but 3 years minimum.

Had horse in the middle of Brussels, and it was ok but by the end of it the gameiness was becoming a bit overwhelming. And this is coming from someone who routinely eats kangaroo which is particularly gamey. I think the issue was that it was an undressed steak with some sides so it was just very rich to work through, whereas with roo I'm usually marinating it in some way or form so the flavour is tempered (to me, that's the main benefit of a gamey meat).

I can still find first-gens like promethazine in Australia but they’re relegated to now basically just being sleeping pills. Anyone chasing allergy suppression will use fexofenadine, loratadine, etc.

I’ve taken fexo in combination with drinking for 20 years now when I know I’m gonna be exposed to allergies. Thinking of allergy meds as sedative is so foreign to me now that it tripped me up at first when reading this convo.

It doesn't rapidly plummet. Things like household contacts give it a surprising amount of staying power, and there are other avenues for infection between households and between the people who do have to go outside. Australia (esp. Melbourne) had some pretty harsh lockdowns (albeit not as harsh as Shanghai now) and it took ages to drop down.
