absolutely not. I might have said maybe in like, 2014 or 2015 or whenever the ai mod subject last came up, but I just plain don't have the time now, at all. I've got threads I'm subscribed to that have 5 figures worth of unread posts. I don't even have time to read 95% of the threads I used to read daily, and barely have time to post in the ones that are at the top of my list importance wise. This might be like the second chat thread I've jumped into in the last year.

Question about setting up a driveline.

I have a 64 GMC 4x4 that I'm doing a bit of resto-modding to (I had a thread but it died a few years ago due to lack of updates/time). Project creep also set in in a big way.

Before I make a new thread, I have a question about the driveline.

Reference photo of the underside of the truck - Transmission is on the left, transfer case is in the middle of the shot. The transmission is mounted to a new rear crossmember that I need to weld in.

This is the comically sized custom driveshaft I had made up, as the original transmission is MUCH shorter than the one I'm putting in (NV3500).

Now, here's where I'm stuck and am looking for advice.

The motor (350 smallblock) can run at 0 to 3* slope (towards the back of the truck).

This effectively alters the driveline angle. I've taken measurements at various points, and have found the following:

I know this diagram isn't the best, but with the back of the engine at 1.5* from level, I believe that these operating angles are pretty much optimal. Am I wrong?

I really want to get this angle right, because I don't want to gently caress up the driveline or eat U-joints or anything.

Once I have the crossmember sorted out, I'm going to be welding it in, re-routing the exhausts, redoing the brakes, putting the seats back in and...she should be back on the road.

Dude! Glad to see you back with that thing... Sorry I think I still haven't read your PM from literally years ago. Those do look decent angle wise. You should probably read over the document yourself but I wouldn't worry about running that setup personally. With both angles under 3 degrees your ujoint life should be pretty good too. This is the Spicer document on driveshaft configuration and design, it covers most info I think you'll need. https://www.waterousco.com/media/pdfs/J3311-1-DSSP.pdf

Yea and its waaayyy easier. Once you learn a few tricks these cars are cake. Even the spark plugs everyone says are a pain, take off the intake on that side and the washer bottle (and maybe battery) on the other and theyre no big deal. With the DOHC ones same thing but the trick is to get a socket and extension that are the exact length of the hole and you can get a ratchet between the cam cover and frame easy. The first time I took off the top mount intercooler on a turbo one it took me like an hour and tons of swearing, after that time it takes like 10 minutes.

It probably sounds stupid saying these are tricks and yea I work on Subies a lot but I looked at it from every angle, literally, and there was no way to get that 02 sensor unplugged on the Ranger without

1. snapping the christmas tree stub holding it to the bracket
2. removing the bracket that had bolts that were a fucker to get to between the intake and firewall
3. soak the entire truck in gasoline and send it to car heaven and buy another Ranger with good 02 sensors since Rangers are cool when you dont have to work on it

To take it apart I got a long flathead screwdriver and jammed it into the clip up from the bottom then slung a bungee cord around the wires to yank it out and hope I didnt ruin the wiring so I'd have to remove and replace the sensor. To get it back together used the same screwdriver jammed into the clip so I could line it up then used my 3ft extension to push it back together. It doesnt sound bad but you have to work with each arm on either side of the exhaust pipe without no room or depth perception since you can only get one eyeball on the connector.

The bellhousing bolts took me like 4 hours to get them all. I do work slow and methodically but it was ridiculous, a lot of it was the starter that once I took the oil filter off made it way easier so thats a good trick to know on that one. The nice thing was that the space between the bellhousing and firewall wasnt too bad and I wonder if that part sucks on the 4.0s, I bet it does.

I've unhooked the exhaust from my stupid Subarus and swapped the engines so many times at this point that I can usually do the upstream O2 sensor connector one handed from above. Reach down between the filter housing and firewall, grab the sensor plug, drag it up and guide the harness plug into it with my thumb till the pegs are in the slots, push on the lever and it seats.

Yeah like literally. I'm not bullshitting here, he's the mirror image of trump. They keep trading spots in the parties but they're both garbage NYC plutocrats with a barely-deniable (to respective party hacks) history of racist bullshit. Bloomberg is the same piece of poo poo, just opposite world mode. You move the D from before his name to after it. And they can both gargle my entire dingdong if they think they're getting my vote.

The only policy difference will be that 50% of Bloomberg's police state oppressors will be women... By the time he leaves office maybe.

Luckily it looks like Bloomberg is gonna lose the primary. You hear me primary voters? Don't make me move to Mars.

The rules are confusing. If they're lithium ion in a device they're fine. If they're loose lithium ion under 100 watt hours, they have to be carry-on. If they're loose lithium ion over 100 watt hours, they have to be packaged appropriately and checked.
They're confusing but this is one thing the TSA actually gets right.
Any size is fine if it's plugged into the device it's for, because it can't short out unless it fails like an iPhone or Samsung.

Up to a certain size is fine loose in carry on because you'll hear it start burning and can get to it with a fire extinguisher. You can't get to it with an extinguisher if it's in checked luggage.

Past that, it's not going to be manageable with a fire extinguisher and will seriously risk the passengers and airframe, so it must be packaged correctly and put in checked luggage.

2 pages back, but wanted to share a follow up to my e/n post...

Contractor showed up today to install the cabinets. Contractor struggled getting the sink base over the 18" stubs I had through the floor.

Contractor and his guys snagged the PVC stubs when setting the sink base.

Contractor and his guys broke the cold water feed line and the line that protruded 12" above the inside of the sink base protruded 4" above the sink base... while the other one was at full height. Because they BROKE THE loving PVC LINE.

Contractor did not tell me.

I found out about 40 minutes later after a 1/2" water line had been pumping full-pressure water into my finished basement.

I've got many hundreds, if not a thousand gallons of water in the basement. Somehow the contractor says that it's my fault. gently caress him sideways. And I will, to the full extent of my capability.

Because... right now... all of the stuff that we had moved to the basement as we recovered from the water flood disaster from last August... is now soaking in water from our water flood disaster in February. :suicide:

The good news is that I got the Wyze cameras on Krakkles' suggestion and I have full video of the events. The audio is fucky, but I think it'll end up as evidence. Thanks, Krakkles.

Jesus Christ man, that blows. This is why I do my own work... I don't trust any contractors to actually do poo poo right or care.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm overthinking it, if I'm focusing too much on one thing, etc....

There's a lot of good guides and books out there, but nothing is as helpful as just talking to someone about this stuff.

I'm considering this when we get to Washington too, because there's no good internet in our area and I think I can fix that. If I can hold down 120-150 customers I can never have a job or drive over the Tacoma narrows bridge again. I'm pretty sure I can pick that many customers up basically as fast as I can get their equipment installed, as long as I do a good job on the first few. I'm already in a few of the local Facebook groups with 7k+ people in them and "the internet sucks so bad out here" is like the fourth highest topic, behind crime, "whose chickens are in my front yard", and traffic.
