One of my work friends kind of off-handedly mentioned her partner was sick earlier this week. Didn't think much off it because she just said he was throwing up all night. Today at lunch she told us he had "flu like symptoms". When pressed she revealed he had been off work all week with this, and his office had been told he was self-isolating. We managed to convince her to go home but the damage is (likely) already done and I'm fully prepared to not be in the office next week. This is someone who has been obsessively following the news, keeping up to date with everything, constantly talking about the symptoms. And she... just decided it didn't apply to her, I guess. This is going to get real bad, real quick. I think the government wants that to happen. A quick short burst on the NHS is easier to explain. We're in a pandemic. There's not enough beds. We couldn't do anything. A longer, more drawn out period would highlight the underfunding of the NHS. They don't want that. Who cares if it sacrifices the olds and poors.

If the government were enforcing quarantines you'd have more people complaining that they need to go to town x and they have to go today and their elderly parents can't even get to the shop and why don't the government just do something etc. etc. They're taking the path of least resistance which means people are kind of okay with it all (until those numbers jump up and start having a wider affect).

Yeah I just nipped to my local big Sainsbury's and stock seemed to be returning to normal. Plenty of milk and bread, still a bit of cleaning products left. Can't say I looked for bog roll because we already had a stash (there's only 2 of us so we always buy more than we need) but the food aisles seemed more stocked than they have been. One thing I have noticed is that there's always been plenty of ready meals. I know they're not the most healthy of options (and more expensive) but I'm surprised the middle class panic buyers aren't stockpiling those like some pseudo-MRE. I've been grabbing a couple every time I go out because I might as well eat that rather than make my own while fresh meat is low.

I've been going along with the assumption that the government really, really, doesn't want to be seen as inconveniencing anyone. They only closed the pubs after getting pressure from Scotland/the NHS (and even then didn't really close them, until there was news reports saying the pubs were full on Friday night). They haven't put in a full lockdown until loads of people were absolute idiots over the weekend and the media criticised the public. At no point has the government taken the load and acted before they "had" to. They're using the media (and their own briefings to the media) to make all their actions look like they've been forced to do it. If only the public had all been 100% rational actors and voluntarily self isolated for two months at the same time we'd be fine! This is why the public are approving of the government. They're merely waiting until the last moment and doing the bare minimum.

My brother is the IT Risk Manager there, can do all of his work from home, and was expressly told he had to be in every day. They've been rolling out laptops but nowhere near quick enough. Hopefully that'll protect him and my friends.

For what it's worth I took my allocated outside time to Tesco this morning and there was plenty of everything. Managed to get mince (not seen for many weeks) and bread with no issues. They've been "forced" into every decision and Johnson gets to look all statesmanlike every day.

For people wondering why the government have got such high approval ratings, this is why. They have preplanned "press conferences" that are broadcast across the nation in prime time where they state that the situation is currently X. The media hacks then go off and find out that, actually, the situation is Y, and this is the bad situation. But the 6 oclock news has already happened, most people don't spend their time reading random journalists's twitter accounts, and by the time the morning news comes around they're too busy doing fluff pieces about the NHS.
