I knew someone in uni called Caoimhe, boy was that not pronounced the way I thought it would be.

I've got a funky name myself so I made sure to get it right after the first time though.

Discourse would have been the death of screenshot LPs, because it has infinite scrolling rather than pages.

Funnily, the LPZone went with Discourse.

And another really old customer service system which did mail-merges to send letters out to all customers, unless the first customer in the file had the initials "GH" which for some reason it treated as a file-identifying magic character string (like "#!" in shell scripts) and wouldn't load it because it didn't think it was a customer name file.

Lol, Ng is my last name and I do occasionally get issues like that, mostly in the UK.

The real fun is watching people try to pronounce it.

One of the more amusing(?) conflicts in the shipping community in the game that that VA did voicing for is about two guys who are sworn brothers rather than blood brothers. There are many massive Twitter screeds about whether or not this constitutes as incest or not. It became more of a big deal in the community when the official game twitter account retweeted fanart of the two and a war happened in the comments between the pros/antis.

Genshin happens to be a lot of younger gamers's first gacha game due to its wide release and being pretty much a "real game" with gacha stapled on it so the kids are down with it until they run into the horrific gacha wall and the cracks start to show and its time to get mad on Twitter.

I DON'T LIKE IT STOP YOU ARE OFFENDING ME DFHJTFF" at them is something else. Mini tells them to gently caress off, waits for the funny wall of text then bans them.

Honestly it's a pretty fun game that you can get like, 50+ hours of gameplay out of it for free, and good for your kid and her friends if they manage to avoid the FOMO business plan inherent to gachas. Hopefully they stick to it. It's just weird how Genshin has managed to attract an extremely weird crowd even among gacha game players who are already a weird bunch.

Actually I'm now wondering if both arms develop the same or whether you end up with mega wanker biceps in one and nothing in the other because you're just locking your elbow and holding it straight.

Guess it depends on how you shoot, I think some kinds of archery they kind of draw the bow from the middle, pushing and pulling?

Been a while since I've done archery, but for everyone past the beginner level there's always both pushing and pulling involved for most bow types (I'm not sure about compound bows because I've never tried one). The amount of push vs pull does depend on what kind of bow you use though, like with a modern recurve bow the bow would start closer to its final endpoint with an arm only slightly bent, so there's more pull than push, whereas with an English longbow you'll want to start with a bent arm, push the longbow out all the way then only draw back. I believe that's how most traditional bowforms do it.

Also most draw power comes from the shoulder and back muscles, the arm muscles are mostly for stabilisation.

Sort of? If you take a Chinese class the teacher might give you a name that actually means something but like any official stuff I had where they translated my name into Chinese they just used the closest phonetic equivalents without much regard for whether I'd picked out a super special name.

Yeah, there are a few characters that are pretty much only used to transliterate names so it's relatively easy to spot one of those.

FWIW my mum just picked a couple of characters that she thought sound nice together and have a classic boy name meaning. No need to consult anyone else.

I don't have an English name either, the only time I have ever used one was one for work whenever I had to talk to Australians over the phone and didn't want to explain how to spell my name. My last name has no vowels so it is especially funny to watch people unfamiliar with it try to say it.

One of my dad's former business partners back in the 80s was a guy named José.

He was a Taiwanese dude who was raised in an orphanage by nuns, who would let the kids choose their own names from a big book of names once they were old enough to read. Only José wanted to get a thoroughly American name like "Joe", but his reading skills weren't as strong as his enthusiasm, hence him pointing at the wrong name and subsequently enduring a life of people being very surprised whenever they met him face to face for the first time after initially communicating by phone.

Not really the same situation but still an amusing Asian person name:

During my first week of uni lectures I was in that stage where I was just chatting to whoever I sat next to. This time around I was sat next to a Vietnamese guy, he had a Vietnamese accent and everything. I ask him what his name was.

Miroslav.

Turns out he was Czech and he was part of the sizable Vietnamese diaspora there.
