March saw us going from the first confirmed death from Covid-19 in the UK to entering the oh poo poo phase of the exponential curve, and the cabinet go from 'herd immunity' and 'take it on the chin' to 'oh poo poo that might include me' and a moderately enforced lockdown.
The FTSE crashes, sterling crashes, health minister Nadine Dorries infects half of the legislature, and all the sports and festivals are cancelled.
The Bank of England cuts interest to 0.1%, the lowest rate ever, Charles takes drastic steps to try and speed up the order of succession, and Boris Johnson threatens Prohibition before testing positive himself and isolating. Welcome to the Roaring Twenties.

Some good news though, the contactless payment limit goes up from £30 to £45 today, so you can buy more without having to touch anything.

Hesiod posted:

For the gods keep hidden from men the means of life [crops]. Else you would easily do work enough in a day to supply you for a full year even without working; soon would you put away your rudder over the smoke, and the fields worked by ox and sturdy mule would run to waste. But Zeus in the anger of his heart hid it, because Prometheus the crafty deceived him; therefore he planned sorrow and mischief against men. He hid fire; but that the noble son of Iapetos stole again for men from Zeus the counselor in a hollow fennel-stalk, so that Zeus who delights in thunder did not see it. But afterwards Zeus who gathers the clouds said to him in anger: "Son of Iapetos, surpassing all in cunning, you are glad that you have outwitted me and stolen fire—a great plague to you yourself and to men that shall be. But I will give men as the price for fire an evil thing in which they may all be glad of heart while they embrace their own destruction." So said the father of men and gods, and laughed aloud.

  • We now have an email address! Applications to solidarity@ukmt.fund will now be accepted, or you can still use the form (linked below) or PM a committee member.

If they're going to continue using mpg then that does make sense. They should at least move to ℓ/100 miles or something if that's what they're selling fuel in.

We will have phased out the internal combustion engine before that gets sorted though. And even then we'll be selling household electricity in kWh and measuring cars in kcal/mile or some poo poo.

Turns out it's neither, and is in fact nearer a US pint (473ml) instead of a UK one (568ml)
Yet elsewhere on the site they refer only to pints and 'about a pint', which makes me wonder if that's discouraging people from giving blood, thinking that a big pint jug is being taken out of them when it's quite a bit less.

e: 3 pints is near enough exactly 1.7L, which is about as close as you can get to a nice conversion.

Probably my own biases here but electrics is fairly straightforward as long as you turn everything off at the breaker before starting and know what breaker controls what.

Technically everything has to be signed off by an electrician now but if you're just e.g. replacing a socket and not replacing the house wiring then nobody cares.

Plumbing is something I wouldn't do myself beyond like changing a sink trap or toilet siphon, because water gets everywhere and ruins everything.

All this is true, but there's an important aside that you should never rely on a fuse or mechanical circuit breaker to save your life. They're dumb and a 13A fuse does not care whether it's putting 10A through your kettle or a much smaller amount through your heart that's still way more than enough to give you a bad time.

Anything you might touch should have either an earthed metal case, that way if something live touches the case you've got a dead short which will draw a few 10s of amps for a very short time, blowing the fuse, or it should have a double insulated case.

And if you're using it outside or in the bathroom, it should also have its own RCD.

Also once you've labelled all your breakers, if you need to change a socket or something always plug in a desk lamp, switch it on, and turn off the breaker that you think turns that socket off, you may be surprised (but it's a better surprise than the other kind).

serious gaylord posted:

Yeah electrics is pretty straight forward and much like you I wont touch plumbing because unlike electrics, doing something wrong with pipes might not be immediately obvious until your ceiling falls in 10 years later.

But I like electrics, its logical and really easy to do with only a fairly basic understanding for most things. A bit trickier when changing all your sockets downstairs mind, but as long as you get someone to check it over after its fine.
With our weird and wonderful (poo poo) ring main system you could end up with a situation where everything looks fine but then your walls catch fire. But that's all the more reason to get all your sockets off and seriously check that both sides of the ring are making full contact with the terminal inside the socket. When I first moved in here I did that and the socket right near the consumer unit had only one neutral connected, so the return path for the entire house was through one half of the ring.

Or get a cheap multimeter. I mean, get an expensive Fluke multimeter like mine, but a £12 one will do the job for checking stuff is off, and testing continuity/resistance.

I also love the volt sticks (light up and/or beep when near voltage) but I only trust them one way - when they light up, there are volts, but not enough that if they don't light up, there are no volts. Fun though, and useful when something stops working, you can wave a stick at the power cord to figure out which end to investigate.
Yeah, I've got a decent (not Fluke level, but trustable) multimeter and £12 no-name moving coil one for simple stuff.

The screwdrivers with a neon tube in are also good, I always poke something that I know is live to make sure the tube's working before I trust it on anything else though.

Absolutely solid build, but whoever electrified it (in the late 30s under the assisted wiring scheme if I had to guess) chose a torturous route, and later modernizations opted to keep it.

The cooker and boiler wiring are modern though (last 10 years, gas option only before that) but the ring main is, yeah...
